Students in higher education with reading and writing difficulties

2015

The aim of this study is to explore adult students’ descriptions and understandings of their reading and writing difficulties, and to describe the ways they are copying with them. In higher level studies, information is typically gained by reading and giving evidence of knowledge acquisition in writing. When students have difficulties with these essential academic skills, studying and lifelong learning can be hard work as well as time-consuming. General understanding of dyslexia and reading difficulties at the higher education level has improved, although considerable ambiguity remains about what these mean in practice. This is a qualitative, interview-based study that seeks to improve our …

Euro Crisis and plurality: Does the political orientation of newspapers determine the selection and spin of information?

2016

This article studies the impact of right and left moderate political orientation of newspapers on the levels of plurality in the news coverage of the Euro Crisis in 20 newspapers from 10 European countries through a methodology based on Simpson’s D index. The expectation of finding distinct patterns of coverage leading to high levels of plurality was not fully supported and the results have shown that national frames influence levels of overall plurality more than political ideology.

Today's news — tomorrow's context: A dynamic model of news processing

1997

We are proposing a feedback model of news processing, assuming that news reception is guided by media input as well as by existing cognitive structures. However, these structures are in turn shaped by former media coverage. In our study we examine viewers’ processing of TV news, comparing objective news content (content analysis) to subjective meaning of news stories (viewer interviews). Results show that viewers interpret information about new events in the context of past events, themselves mainly a reflection of former media coverage.

Regioninės kultūros samprata rengiant mokytojus Latvijoje, Lietuvoje ir Norvegijoje: lyginamoji atvejo analizė.

2019

2020

Poliitikkojen väitetään vaikenevan taiteesta ja kulttuurista. Suurimmalla osasta puolueista on silti tarve sanallistaa suhdettaan taiteeseen ja kulttuuriin sekä niiden edistämiseen. Tutkimusaineistoni koostuu viimeisen kuudenkymmenen vuoden aikana toimineen 48 puolueen 1270 poliittisesta ohjelmasta. Vuosina 1960–2019 toimivista ja vuodesta 1969 lähtien rekisteröityjen puolueiden ohjelmista yhteensä 579:stä löytyy taide- ja kulttuurikirjauksia. Tämän artikkelin tavoitteena on laadullisen ja määrällisen sisällönanalyysin kautta löytää, tunnistaa ja nimetä eri puolueita yhdistävät pitkät linjat, päämäärät ja motiivit taidetta ja kulttuuria koskevissa kirjauksissa poliittisissa ohjelmateksteiss…

Voices and perspectives in Norwegian pupils' work on religions and world views: a diachronic study applying sociocultural learning theory

2011

Accepted version of an article in the journal:British Journal of Religious Education. Definitive published version available at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/01416200.2011.628190 This article researches work by four pupils in a diachronic collection of Norwegian primary school workbooks. Given signs of a variety of voices and perspectives in chosen representations of central tenets and/or practices in religions and philosophical traditions, how can an analysis and discussion of a few chosen texts shed light on their authors', i.e. the pupils', (self-) formative modes of encountering the diverse voices and perspectives? The pupils' expressions are discussed by staging an interaction between ind…

Development of a Risk Culture Intensity Index to Evaluate the Financial Market in Germany

Banks have been seriously impacted by the financial crisis. The financial crisis causes an immense discussion about the soundness of the risk culture of the financial institutions. Corresponding to the results of diverse research studies, senior risk management observed a weak risk culture in the financial market as a trigger of the crisis. In accordance with the prevailing literature, I designed a risk culture model, which is used as the foundation for the autonomous development of a risk culture intensity index (R.C.I.I.). In the next step, I applied this index for the analysis of the risk culture of the 30 top financial institutions in Germany in a timeframe of four years from 2008 to 20…
