Is Facebook driving tabloidization?
2021
In highly commercialized media markets, newspapers must be present on social media whose logic favours user engagement, shareworthiness, and virality. This might foster increasingly tabloid-like reporting, but empirical studies on the actual effects on newspaper content are widely lacking. We investigate how far newspaper type (quality paper vs. tabloid) and distribution channel (print version, website, Facebook page) influences the degree of tabloidization of two newspapers’ political news. In a content analysis of political news articles of FAZ and BILD in their print versions, on their websites, and on their Facebook pages (n=2,441), we measure tabloidization on three dimensions (topic, …

The article focuses on the analysis of the measures taken in these three cases concerning the reception, the welcoming, and the…
Music as emotional self-regulation throughout adulthood
2010
Emotional self-regulation is acknowledged as one of the most important reasons for musical engagement at all ages. Yet there is little knowledge on how this self-regulatory use of music develops across the life span. A qualitative study was conducted to initially explore central processes and strategies of the emotional self-regulation during adulthood. The data were collected through group interviews and analyzed through qualitative content analysis. Participants were 21 interviewees with an age range of 21—70 years. The results clarified conceptual features of music-related emotional self-regulation in adulthood and revealed two main trends. First, the basic nature of regulation, includi…

Places and Spaces: The Remembrance of D-Day 1944 in Normandy
2011
With World War II having razed vast parts of Europe by 1945, many citizens of the continent’s war-torn countries hoped they would soon leave behind the effects of turmoil, destruction, and trauma. The author examines the commemoration of D-Day (June 6, 1944), exploring why war commemoration rituals still captivate thousands of people and illustrating attempts that have been made to shape a peaceful future in postwar Europe. She draws on concepts of action theory to demonstrate how rituals create, in a single place, various kinds of space informed by ideology, beliefs, and knowledge and how they can help people come to terms with a harrowing past. The chapter is based on more than 100 qualit…
Facilitators, teachers, observers, and play partners : Exploring how mothers describe their role in play activities across three communities
2019
The present study explored the perspectives of mothers from three communities regarding their role in play activities with their toddlers. The mothers of two-year-old children from Muenster, Germany (n = 34), Chennai, India (n = 36), and New York City, USA (n = 36), participated in the study. Qualitative content analysis was utilized to analyze the mothers' responses to semi-structured interview questions. Four roles were identified as characterizing the mothers' narratives, namely mothers as facilitators, teachers, play partners, or observers. The goal of facilitator was to support children's autonomy; teachers often described educational learning goals; and play partners and observers hig…
Building children’s sense of community in a day care centre through small groups in play

This study examines the process through which children build a sense of community in small groups in a day care centre. The study asks the following: how does children’s sense of community develop, and what are its key features? The results show that children’s sense of community developed through three stages. In the first stage, it evolved gradually through experiences in joint play. In the second stage, stable friendships were formed and strengthened in play. In the third and final stage, sense of community was fully established and children’s emotional bonding was stro…
Project Education and Adams’ Theory of Equity
2020
This work-in-progress paper in research category is concerned with students’ perceptions of justice in software engineering group projects. Taking a directed content analysis approach, the aim is to analyze the relevance of Adams’ theory of Equity for small-group project education. The analysis was applied to the data collected from a third-year project course in which students encounter an open-ended group assignment. The results indicate that the theory can serve as a useful framework that helps teachers to identify justice-related issues in project courses. On the other hand, it was concluded that special carefulness is advisable considering the simplicity of the theory. peerReviewed
