Palaeoecology of non marine algae and stromatolites: Permian of France and adjacent countries

1999

Abstract Some Permian, continental basins from Algeria, Morocco, France, Italy, Germany and Poland reveal algal remains and stromatolites, mainly during Lower Permian, but also during Middle and Upper Permian. The algae belong to 8 morphogenera and 12 morphospecies. Two species are new. The taxonomic attributions are difficult, even if some species resemble living species. The algae make unorganized masses, or laminated builtups (stromatolites, oncolites, oolites). Algal masses and stromatolites are contained in fluviatile sediments (active or abandoned channels) and lacustrine deposits (playas, ephemeral lakes shorelines, lakes several meters or decameters deep). Considering the sedimentol…

Timing the Mesolithic-Neolithic Transition in the Iberian Peninsula: The Radiocarbon Dataset

2019

In this paper, we describe the radiocarbon dataset compiled in the context of the project HAR2015-68962 EVOLPAST: Dinamicas evolutivas y patrones de variabilidad cultural de los ultimos cazadores-recolectores y el primer Neolitico en el este peninsular (7000–4500 cal. BC) funded by the Spanish government. The dataset offers the most complete and public radiocarbon dataset focus on the Neolithic Transition in the Iberian Peninsula. Funding statement: The data collection was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness grant HAR2015-68962-P to Oreto Garcia Puchol & Joan Bernabeu. SPG is supported by Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness, Postdoct…

SIGNIFICANCE FOR INTERNATIONAL CORRELATION OF THE PERAPERTÚ FORMATION IN NORTHERN PALENCIA, CANTABRIAN MOUNTAINS. TECTONIC/STRATIGRAPHIC CONTEXT AND …

2021

Small ammonoid assemblages are recorded from the Perapertú Formation in northern Palencia. This is a mudstone unit with local platform limestones characterised by carbonate debris flows on the limestone margins. This unit, of Late Bashkirian to Early Moscovian age, participates in a series of southwards verging thrust slicesNorth of a major fault zone which originated as the head (leading edge) of a large thrust sheet with an internal deformation consisting of thrust slices and at least one nappe structure. Opposed vergencies at the head of this major thrust sheet (Carrionas Thrust Front) and the Ruesga Fault which locally modifies its trace, mark the position where the northern branch of t…

Global connectedness in higher education : student voices on the value of cross-cultural learning dialogue

2015

The study explores how sense of global connectedness can be enhanced by creating opportunities for cross-cultural dialogue in higher education. Thematic analysis of randomly selected 15 learning journals, students’ reflections on their learning during an international seminar was used to identify students’ significant learning experiences. The results emphasise the added value of diversity (geographical, disciplinary, cultural and social) among students, faculty and invited presenters for creating meaningful learning. Furthermore, they suggest that designing an integrated approach of contents, contexts and activities for critical engagement in global dialogue and knowledge generation in hig…

Teachers' perspective on gratitude within classroom environment

2015

The present is a qualitative research on the topic of gratitude, specifically in classroom contexts. Its main purpose is to explore potential situations where gratitude is speculated to be present within classroom activities. The research took place in a primary school in the city of Jyväskylä, Finland. Two different groups of this school were videotaped during one of their lesson and the material was used in stimulated recall interviews. In the stimulated recall interview, teachers gave accounts about the different grateful moments and provided information about their thoughts and possible reasons why children were grateful. The main results from this investigation highlight seven differen…

The Application of Supercritical Fluids Technology to Recover Healthy Valuable Compounds from Marine and Agricultural Food Processing By-Products: A …

2021

Food by-products contain a remarkable source of bioactive molecules with many benefits for humans; therefore, their exploitation can be an excellent opportunity for the food sector. Moreover, the revalorization of these by-products to produce value-added compounds is considered pivotal for sustainable growth based on a circular economy. Traditional extraction technologies have several drawbacks mainly related to the consumption of hazardous organic solvents, and the high temperatures maintained for long extraction periods which cause the degradation of thermolabile compounds as well as a low extraction efficiency of desired compounds. In this context, supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) ha…

Intimate Partner Violence in Finland

2021

High prevalence of intimate partner violence against women and high levels of gender equality in Finland yield to what has been called the “Nordic paradox.” It has been argued that the high level of gender equality has caused the need for IPV interventions and especially the gendered perspective to be overlooked. However, there has been recent and ongoing development in IPV intervention and prevention in regard to perpetrator programs, couple therapy, and programs to address post-separation stalking. Training programs for social and healthcare professionals and the police have been developed, as well as for teachers and other professionals at school. We hope the current government’s new act…

Zero-shot Semantic Segmentation using Relation Network

2021

Zero-shot learning (ZSL) is widely studied in recent years to solve the problem of lacking annotations. Currently, most studies on ZSL are for image classification and object detection. But, zero-shot semantic segmentation, pixel level classification, is still at its early stage. Therefore, this work proposes to extend a zero-shot image classification model, Relation Network (RN), to semantic segmentation tasks. We modified the structure of RN based on other state-of-the-arts semantic segmentation models (i.e. U-Net and DeepLab) and utilizes word embeddings from Caltech-UCSD Birds 200-2011 attributes and natural language processing models (i.e. word2vec and fastText). Because meta-learning …

Students' Perceptions on Engaging Database Domains and Structures

2023

Several educational studies have argued for the contextualization of assignments, i.e., for providing a context or a story instead of an abstract or symbolic problem statement. Such contextualization may have beneficial effects such as higher student engagement and lower dropout rates. In the domain of database education, textbooks and educators typically provide an example database for context. These are then used to introduce key concepts related to database design, and to illustrate querying. However, it remains unstudied what kinds of database contexts are engaging for novices. In this paper, we study which aspects of database domain and complexity students find engaging through student…

A person-oriented approach to sport and school burnout in adolescent student-athletes: The role of individual and parental expectations

2017

Abstract Objectives The present study aimed to examine what kind of burnout profiles exist among student-athletes based on their sport and school burnout symptoms. Moreover, it was investigated whether athletes' expectations of success in sport and school, on the one hand, and parental expectations, on the other hand, were predictors of the likelihood of the athlete to show a certain profile, after taking into account the effects of gender, grade point average, type of sport, and level of competition. Design and methods The participants were 391 student-athletes (51% females) from six different upper secondary sport schools in Finland, and 448 parents (58% mothers). The athletes filled in q…
