Developments in the biomechanics and equipment of Olympic cross-country skiers

2018

Source at: http://doi.org/10.3389/fphys.2018.00976 Here, our aim was to describe the major changes in cross-country (XC) skiing in recent decades, as well as potential future developments. XC skiing has been an Olympic event since the very first Winter Games in Chamonix, France, in 1924. Over the past decades, considerable developments in skiing techniques and improvements in equipment and track preparation have increased skiing speed. In contrast to the numerous investigations on the physiological determinants of successful performance, key biomechanical factors have been less explored. Today’s XC skier must master a wide range of speeds, terrains, and race distances and formats (e.g., dis…

Friends, academic achievement, and school engagement during adolescence : A social network approach to peer influence and selection effects

2018

Abstract Peers become increasingly important socializing agents for academic behaviors and attitudes during adolescence. This study investigated peer influence and selection effects on adolescents' emotional (i.e., flow in schoolwork, school burnout, school value), cognitive (i.e., school effort), and behavioral (i.e., truancy) engagement in school. A social network approach was used to examine students of post-comprehensive education in Finland (N = 1419; mean age = 16). Students were asked to nominate peers to generate peer networks and to describe their own school engagement at two time points (one year apart). Network analyses revealed that the degree to which peer influence and selecti…

Mobile Apps and Social Media

2017

1The increasing penetration of smartphones among global population, especially among youth and children, has define a mobile and interactive media use without any precedent. A global connected world is the context in where our offspring are developing self-competences in media literacy because they manage technological devices at very early ages. This context is the state of affairs of this article in which we present two different steps: firstly, a theoretical study, showing the impact of mobile devices, focusing on smartphones and mobile applications where the question arisen is: What are children and young doing while online? Media literacy is also described in order to apply its dimensi…

Connecting others: Does a tertius iungens orientation shape the relationship between research networks and innovation?

2021

Research on social networks and innovation emphasizes that individuals spanning structural holes and crossing institutional boundaries have more opportunities for knowledge recombination and innovation involvement. However, transforming the potential knowledge and resources available through personal networks to attain innovation can be difficult for the focal individual. Using an ego-network approach, this study examines whether and to what extent an individual strategic orientation to cooperation (i.e. tertius iungens) contributes to strengthening the relation between two personal network properties (structural and institutional separation) and involvement in innovation. Our analysis is c…

The effect of early career social capital on long-term income development in Finland

2020

PurposeIn this study, the authors examine whether social capital embedded in individuals' social networks is connected to employees' long-term income development in Finland.Design/methodology/approachAnalyses are based on 25–35-year-old employees from the Finnish Living Conditions Survey of 1994 combined with register data on earned incomes from 1995 to 2016. The authors used questions addressing the frequency of meeting parents or siblings, spending free time with co-workers and participation in associational, civic or other societal activities as measures of the extent of network capital. Ordered logistic model was used to examine whether the size and composition of social networks differ…

bbFISH-ing in the sonication fluid

2019

Abstract By 2030, the annual number of combined total hip and knee arthroplasty is estimated to reach 3.5 to 4 million in the US alone. In the context of a constant increase of the number of primary and revision total hip and knee arthroplasty, an increased risk of complication is expected. Prosthetic joint infections (PJIs) represent major cause of healthcare expenditure and morbidity. PJI still remain the most common and feared arthroplasty complication. A rapid and correct diagnosis of infection is decisive for a correct therapeutical management. In this setting, the Academic Emergency Hospital Sibiu adopted and implemented, with the beginning of September 2016, a new strategy for the di…

‘The will to not be empowered (according to your rules)’: Resistance in Finnish participatory social policy

2018

Participation has increasingly become a means and an end for successful and ‘empowering’ social policy. Building on previous governmentality critiques of participatory initiatives, this article investigates practices of resistance in the context of Finnish participatory social policy. I adopt a Foucauldian counter-conducts approach as my lens to study critical speech as a form of resistance in initiatives that invite marginalised people as ‘experts-by-experience’ in social welfare organisations. I illustrate how practices of governing and resistance are intertwined and mutually dependent in a much subtler and more practical manner than allows the often-used analytical dichotomy between domi…

SEMANTIC AND CONTEXTUAL APPROACH FOR THE RECOMMENDATION OF LEARNING MODULES IN MOBILITY

2012

International audience; Many researchers argue that mobile learning is just an adaptation of e-learning on mobile technology, but far from a simple extension of e-learning, m-learning raises original issues in technological and pedagogical terms. M-learning is usually based on the consideration of a context rich on information and interactions. The challenge of m-learning is therefore, not simply to transfer on mobile content designed primarily for e-learning. This concept implies that we must rethink the entire process of the learning experience in mobility to maximize its efficiency.

Recommender system for combination of learning elements in mobile environment

2012

5 pages; International audience; The paper presents an ongoing research about the development of a new recommender system dedicated to m-learning. This system is an extension of content based recommender system proposals. It's made of three levels architecture: 1/ a domain model describing the knowledge of teaching, 2/ a user model defining learner's profile and learning's context, 3/ an adaptation model containing rules and metaheuristics, which aims at combining learning modules. Our system takes into account the spatio-temporal context of the learners, the evolution of learner's profile and the dynamic adaptation of modules during the learning process in a mobile environment. The result …

The NUMEN project @ LNS: Status and perspectives

2017

The NUMEN project aims at accessing experimentally driven information on Nuclear Matrix Elements (NME) involved in the half-life of the neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ), by high-accuracy measurements of Heavy Ion (HI) induced Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reaction cross sections. In particular, the (18O,18Ne) and (20Ne,20O) reactions are used as tools for β+β+ and β−β− decays, respectively. In the experiments, performed at INFN - Laboratory Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania, the beams are accelerated by the Superconducting Cyclotron (CS) and the reaction ejectiles are detected the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer. The measured cross sections are challengingly low (a few nb), being the tota…
