Zur Frage der Darmkontrastierung in der abdominellen Computertomographie
1992
In 56 patients undergoing abdominal CT the gastrointestinal tract was defined by negative contrast instead of the conventional positive contrast from an iodine containing contrast medium. The contrast material was a 2 1/2% mannitol solution and was used for filling the rectum. Filling of the gastrointestinal tract was of similar quality to that obtained with positive contrast media. The number of artifacts due to high contrast boundaries was slightly greater with the negative contrast than it would have been with positive contrast. Differentiation of the gastrointestinal tract from other abdominal organs was equally good for both methods. The negative contrast method was poor in diagnosing …

Signature of recent historical events in the European Y-chromosomal STR haplotype distribution
2005
Previous studies of human Y-chromosomal single-nucleotide polymorphisms (Y-SNPs) established a link between the extant Y-SNP haplogroup distribution and the prehistoric demography of Europe. By contrast, our analysis of seven rapidly evolving Y-chromosomal short tandem repeat loci (Y-STRs) in over 12,700 samples from 91 different locations in Europe reveals a signature of more recent historic events, not previously detected by other genetic markers. Cluster analysis based upon molecular variance yields two clearly identifiable sub-clusters of Western and Eastern European Y-STR haplotypes, and a diverse transition zone in central Europe, where haplotype spectra change more rapidly with longi…

Strategic Management Simulations: the German Case
1995
This chapter initially considers the rationale and potential value of games and simulations for managerial and executive assessment. Several shortcomings of existing techniques are discussed. In contrast, characteristics of the Strategic Management Simulations (SMS) are described in terms of applicability, reliability, construct validity, predictive validity and other factors. This chapter provides validity information about a German version of the SMS system via a case analysis procedure with two German samples.
Exploiting the Incomparability of Comparable Corpora for Contrastive Linguistics and Translation Studies
2013
For empirical research in translation studies and contrastive linguistics comparability across languages is an important and non-trivial issue, particularly, if we aim at quantifying differences and commonalities. We approach this problem by investigating the CroCo Corpus of English and German originals and translations in eight different registers concentrating on the (in)comparability of the different subcorpora. They are comparable across languages but incomparable in terms of functional, i.e. register, variation. A feature matrix is analysed to reveal differences and commonalities between the bilingually comparable texts (i.e. English and German originals) and the monolingually comparab…
Ligophorus pilengas n. sp. (monogenea: ancyrocephalidae) from the introduced so-iuy mullet, mugil soiuy (teleostei: mugilidae), in the sea of Azov an…
2004
The monogenean Ligophorus chabaudi was originally described on the gills of the flathead mullet, Mugil cephalus, and was subsequently reported on the So-iuy mullet, Mugil soiuy. However, the morphology of sclerotized parts and multivariate statistical analyses suggest that the form from the So-iuy mullet represents a new species. This study provides a description of the new species Ligophorus pilengas n. sp. and provides additional morphological data concerning the morphology of the ventral bar that might be useful for the diagnosis of Ligophorus. Ligophorus pilengas n. sp. is the second species of Ligophorus reported on the So-iuy mullet. Zoogeographical records indicate that L. pilengas n…
La Ριμάδα κόρης και νέου e i Contrasti italiani
2017
Viene effettuato un confronto tra La Ριμάδα κόρης και νέου (contrasto greco presente in due manoscritti del XV secolo) e i Contrasti italiani di età precedente o anche contemporanei (da Cielo d'Alcamo a Leonardo Giustinian) A comparison is made between La Ριμάδα κόρης και νέου (Greek contrast present in two 15th century manuscripts) and the Italian Contrasts of previous or even contemporary age (from Cielo d'Alcamo to Leonardo Giustinian)
When does Regression discontinuity design work? Evidence from random election outcomes
2018
We use elections data in which a large number of ties in vote counts between candidates are resolved via a lottery to study the personal incumbency advantage. We benchmark non‐experimental regression discontinuity design (RDD) estimates against the estimate produced by this experiment that takes place exactly at the cutoff. The experimental estimate suggests that there is no personal incumbency advantage. In contrast, conventional local polynomial RDD estimates suggest a moderate and statistically significant effect. Bias‐corrected RDD estimates that apply robust inference are, however, in line with the experimental estimate. Therefore, state‐of‐the‐art implementation of RDD can meet the re…
Liver haemangiomas undetermined at grey-scale ultrasound: contrast-enhancement patterns with SonoVue and pulse-inversion US.
2005
The objective of this study was to describe the spectrum of contrast-enhancement patterns of hepatic haemangiomas undetermined at grey-scale ultrasound (US) on SonoVue-enhanced pulse-inversion (PI) US. Twenty patients (11 women, nine men) with 35 haemangiomas (size range: 1-7 cm; mean: 3.1 cm) undetermined at baseline US underwent PI at low M.I. (0.05-0.08) after i.v. injection of SonoVue. All haemangiomas were confirmed by typical helical computed tomography (CT) and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. US examinations were videotaped and then reviewed by two experienced radiologists blinded to the final diagnosis. Readers evaluated by consensus the baseline echogenicity and the d…
