Optimal control of an inhomogeneous spin ensemble coupled to a cavity

We apply optimal control techniques to an inhomogeneous spin ensemble coupled to a cavity. A general procedure is proposed for designing the control strategies. We numerically show the extent to which optimal control fields robust against system uncertainties help enhancing the sensitivity of the detection process. The parameters of the numerical simulations are taken from recent Electron Spin Resonance experiments. The low and high cooperativity regimes are explored.
Refractive index change dependence on Ge(1) defects inγ-irradiated Ge-doped silica

We present an experimental study regarding the effects of the $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ radiation on silica glass doped with Ge up to $10\text{ }000$ ppm molar produced by the sol-gel technique. We have determined the irradiation-induced changes in the refractive index $(\ensuremath{\Delta}n)$ as a function of the oxygen deficiency of the samples, evaluated from the ratio between the germanium lone pair centers (GLPC) and the Ge content. $\ensuremath{\Delta}n$ at 1500 nm have been estimated using optical-absorption spectra in the range 1.5--6 eV. Talbot interferometry: a new geometry

Abstract With the Talbot effect, planes are found where the Fresnel diffraction pattern, of a Ronchi ruling, exhibits zero visibility. These planes are exploited to propose a novel geometry for Talbot interferometry, which has high sensitivity. Experimental verifications are included.
Search for elements 119 and 120

A search for production of the superheavy elements with atomic numbers 119 and 120 was performed in the 50Ti+249Bk and 50Ti+249Cf fusion-evaporation reactions, respectively, at the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA at GSI Darmstadt, Germany. Over four months of irradiation, the 249Bk target partially decayed into 249Cf, which allowed for a simultaneous search for both elements. Neither was detected at cross-section sensitivity levels of 65 and 200 fb for the 50Ti+249Bk and 50Ti+249Cf reactions, respectively, at a midtarget beam energy of Elab=281.5 MeV. Red-green vs. blue-yellow spatio-temporal contrast sensitivity across the visual field

We measured contrast sensitivity (CS) to sinusoidal spatio-temporal patterns isolating the red-green and blue-yellow mechanisms, at 21 locations in the visual field (including the fovea). These measurements complete the available data for the red-green mechanism at fovea and for both mechanisms outside fovea with non-stationary patterns. Chromatic detection surfaces are low-pass at fovea and CS decreases with eccentricity at a rate that depends on the spatial and temporal frequencies. Constraining the neutrino emission of gravitationally lensed Flat-Spectrum Radio Quasars with ANTARES data

This paper proposes to exploit gravitational lensing effects to improve the sensitivity of neutrino telescopes to the intrinsic neutrino emission of distant blazar populations. This strategy is illustrated with a search for cosmic neutrinos in the direction of four distant and gravitationally lensed Flat-Spectrum Radio Quasars. The magnification factor is estimated for each system assuming a singular isothermal profile for the lens. Based on data collected from 2007 to 2012 by the ANTARES neutrino telescope, the strongest constraint is obtained from the lensed quasar B0218+357, providing a limit on the total neutrino luminosity of this source of 1.08×10^46 erg s-1. The analysis aims to evaluate which is the most important among traffic parameters (flows, queues length, occupancy degree, and travel time) to forecast CO and C6H6 concentrations. The study area was identified by Notarbartolo Road and bounded by Liberta Street and Sciuti Street in the urban area of Palermo in Southern Italy. Linear infrared dichroism by a double modulation technique

In the first part of this paper an experimental setup using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) in combination with a photoelastic modulator (PEM) for linear dichroism measurements is described. The second part shows the influence of PEM-amplitude and scan-velocity on the sensitivity of the instrument. The third part deals with the fringe-problem in the baselines of absorbance spectra and its influence on the determination of the linear dichroic ratio.
The positioning system of the ANTARES Neutrino Telescope

The ANTARES neutrino telescope, located 40km off the coast of Toulon in the Mediterranean Sea at a mooring depth of about 2475m, consists of twelve detection lines equipped typically with 25 storeys. Every storey carries three optical modules that detect Cherenkov light induced by charged secondary particles (typically muons) coming from neutrino interactions. As these lines are flexible structures fixed to the sea bed and held taut by a buoy, sea currents cause the lines to move and the storeys to rotate.
