Effect of RNS60 in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a phase II multicentre, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
2022
Background and purpose: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease with limited treatment options. RNS60 is an immunomodulatory and neuroprotective investigational product that has shown efficacy in animal models of ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases. Its administration has been safe and well tolerated in ALS subjects in previous early phase trials. Methods: This was a phase II, multicentre, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial. Participants diagnosed with definite, probable or probable laboratory-supported ALS were assigned to receive RNS60 or placebo administered for 24 weeks intravenously (375 ml) once a week and via nebul…
EXTRACORPOREAL SHOCK WAVE THERAPY (ESWT) IN CHRONIC LOW BACK PAIN: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF RANDOMIZED CLINICAL TRIALS
2020
Background: Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) has become a popular tool to treat musculoskeletal disorders and chronic low back pain. Aim of the study: To review the current scientific literature and assess the utility of ESWT in treating chronic low back pain. Methods: This systematic review was conducted from November 2019 to January 2020. Its purpose was to determine what the effectiveness is of the various forms of ESWT for the treatment of chronic low back pain. The critical review of the literature on the use of ESWT in chronic low back was made using the scientifically recognized medical databases PubMed, MEDLINE, Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) and Web of Science Core…
ESSAI RANDOMISÉ POUR ÉVALUER L’EFFICACITÉ ET LA SÉCURITÉ DE TRAITEMENTS CHEZ DES PATIENTS AMBULATOIRES ATTEINTS DE COVID-19 AYANT DES FACTEURS DE RIS…
2021
Context. The Covid-19 pandemic is of unprecedented magnitude and has had major social and health consequences. Primary care professionals, mainly general practitioners, ensure the care of most patients with Covid-19. An early-stage treatment administered to patients with risk factors for developing a severe disease could reduce hospitalization and death rates. No treatment is currently validated in this indication. Objectives. To evaluate the safety and efficacy of experimental candidate agents delivered in outpatient settings to reduce the risk of hospitalization or death in at-risk patients with early-stage proven Covid-19 and no indication for hospital admission. Methods. Multicentric, o…
Stationary, Second Use Battery Energy Storage Systems and Their Applications: A Research Review
2021
The global demand for electricity is rising due to the increased electrification of multiple sectors of economic activity and an increased focus on sustainable consumption. Simultaneously, the share of cleaner electricity generated by transient, renewable sources such as wind and solar energy is increasing. This has made additional buffer capacities for electrical grids necessary. Battery energy storage systems have been investigated as storage solutions due to their responsiveness, efficiency, and scalability. Storage systems based on the second use of discarded electric vehicle batteries have been identified as cost-efficient and sustainable alternatives to first use battery storage syste…
Parametric sensitivity of a CFD model concerning the hydrodynamics of trickle-bed reactor (TBR)
2016
Abstract The aim of the present study was to investigate the sensitivity of a multiphase Eulerian CFD model with respect to relations defining drag forces between phases. The mean relative error as well as standard deviation of experimental and computed values of pressure gradient and average liquid holdup were used as validation criteria of the model. Comparative basis for simulations was our own data-base obtained in experiments carried out in a TBR operating at a co-current downward gas and liquid flow. Estimated errors showed that the classical equations of Attou et al. (1999) defining the friction factors Fjk approximate experimental values of hydrodynamic parameters with the best agre…
Tracking mite trophic interactions by multiplex PCR
2020
Background A thorough knowledge of trophic webs in agroecosystems is essential to achieve successful biological pest control. Phytoseiid mites are the most efficient natural enemies of tetranychid mites, which include several important pests worldwide. Nevertheless, phytoseiids may feed on other food sources including other microarthropods, plants and even other phytoseiids (intraguild predation), which can interfere with biological control services. Molecular gut content analysis is a valuable tool for characterizing trophic interactions, mainly when working on microarthropods such as mites. We have designed new primers for Phytoseiidae, Tetranychidae and Thysanoptera identification and th…
L’interpretazione del trust e l’obbligo di interpretazione conforme («Reading down»)
2022
The recent decision in Goodrich v AB highlights a number of problems which this essay centres upon in an eort to outline a more modern and CEDU oriented version of the law of trust. In particular, the focus will be on the applicable criteria in this branch of the law to the interpretation of settlements aimed at conferring benets on one or more persons, to be identied through a correct analysis of their objective, legal status in relation to the settlor's intention. It will also be devoted to the determination of whether or not duties of disclosure of relevant documents relating to his/her activity may be said to be incumbent, and in the event to what extent, on the trustee. All these issue…
Labor market performance of dropouts: the role of personality
2014
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide evidence on labor market careers of dropouts with various levels of education. Design/methodology/approach – The paper compares the labor market careers of dropouts and non-dropouts between ages 15 and 50 by using longitudinal data. The paper analyses how the results change when the authors control for differences in personality characteristics. Findings – The paper finds that dropping out diminishes one's success in the labor market but this connection is reduced when the model is augmented with personality. Dropouts seem to have or lack certain personality characteristics that are associated with labor market success. These findings sugge…
