Testbed implementation of the meta-MAC protocol
2016
The meta-MAC protocol is a systematic and automatic method to dynamically combine any set of existing MAC protocols into a single higher layer MAC protocol. We present a proof-of-concept implementation of the meta-MAC protocol by utilizing a programmable wireless MAC processor (WMP) on top of a commodity wireless card in combination with a host-level software module. The implementation allows us to combine, with certain constraints, a number of protocols each represented as an extended finite state machine. To illustrate the combination principle, we combine protocols of the same type but with varying parameters in a wireless mesh network. Specifically, we combine TDMA protocols with all po…
The controller's role in environmental management control
2014
This paper explores the role of the management controller in environmental management control (EMC) by means of a longitudinal case study of a French company with a pioneering approach to EMC. The results show that the management controller has four key roles (carbon auditor, business partner, euro-carbon translator, and agent of change) and illustrate the characteristics of the controller in this new domain (image, power of influence, and territory). Several theoretical, managerial, and methodological lessons may be learned from this case study.
Equivalence of Open-Loop and Closed-Loop Operation of SAW Resonators and Delay Lines
2019
International audience; Surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors in the form of two-port resonators or delay lines are widely used in various fields of application. The readout of such sensors is achieved by electronic systems operating either in an open-loop or in a closed-loop configuration. The mode of operation of the sensor system is usually chosen based on requirements like, e.g., bandwidth, dynamic range, linearity, costs, and immunity against environmental influences. Because the limit of detection (LOD) at the output of a sensor system is often one of the most important figures of merit, both readout structures, i.e., open-loop and closed-loop systems, are analyzed in terms of the minim…
Global linear feedback control for the generalized Lorenz system
2006
Abstract In this paper we show how the chaotic behavior of the Chen system can be controlled via feedback technique. We design both a nonlinear feedback controller and a linear one which globally regulate the closed-loop system states to a given point. We finally show that our approach works also for the whole family of the generalized Lorenz system.
CMOS Capacitance-to-Time Converter-Based Interface for Differential Capacitive Sensors
2020
This paper presents pre-layout simulation results on a CMOS implementation of a capacitance-to-time converter-based electronic interface for differential capacitive sensors. Its simple architecture, comprising only three operational amplifiers (OA) and a digital mixer (inverted XOR gate) allows, by properly setting the values of seven biasing resistors, to fit the working range anywhere from few fF to hundreds of pF, giving the output quasi-digital signals (T and PW) in the useful μs-ms range (appropriate for direct interfacing with general purposes microcontrollers). A couple of illustrative examples are provided.
Towards a SDN-based architecture for analyzing network traffic in cloud computing infrastructures
2015
Currently, network traffic monitoring tools do not fit well in the monitoring of cloud computing infrastructures. These tools are not integrated with the control plane of the cloud computing stack. This lack of integration causes a deficiency in the handling of the re-usage of IP addresses along virtual machines, a lack of adaption and reaction on highly frequent topology changes, and a lack of accuracy in the metrics gathered for the networking traffic flowing along the cloud infrastructure. The main contribution of this paper is to provide a novel SDN-based architecture to carry out the monitoring of network traffic in cloud infrastructures. The architecture in based on the integration be…
Position Control of a Mobile Robot through PID Controller
2019
Abstract In this paper, the implementation and tuning steps of the PID controllers were proposed for the position control of a mobile robot with differential steering. The purpose of this robot was the participation in a European amateur robotics contest, the mobile robot being developed in the Engineering Faculty of Sibiu, Department of Industrial Machines and Equipment. After a brief introduction of the mobile entertainment robot, followed by description of the robot’s different components and traction principles, several principles of tuning the PID controller for the mobile robot are presented. The paper ends with some general conclusions based upon the results obtained from studying th…
Design and Implementation of Acoustic Source Localization on a Low-Cost IoT Edge Platform
2020
The implementation of algorithms for acoustic source localization on edge platforms for the Internet of Things (IoT) is gaining momentum. Applications based on acoustic monitoring can greatly benefit from efficient implementations of such algorithms, enabling novel services for smart homes and buildings or ambient-assisted living. In this context, this brief proposes extreme low-cost sound source localization system composed of two microphones and the low power microcontroller module ESP32. A Direction-Of-Arrival (DOA) algorithm has been implemented taking into account the specific features of this board, showing excellent performance despite the memory constraints imposed by the platform. …
Frequency Regulation of Hybrid Power System by Optimized Adaptive Fuzzy PID Controller
2020
In this study, an adaptive fuzzy PID (AFPID) regulator has been proposed for frequency control of hybrid power system. For controller parameter optimization, an upgraded Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) has been employed. In the proposed Upgraded WOA (UWOA) technique, a cosine function is incorporated in the original WOA for determining control parameter to manage the position of whales throughout optimization procedure. Furthermore, scaling factors are employed in original WOA to adjust the travel of whales in search procedure. Proposed UWOA technique is employed to design an AFPID controller for frequency regulation of a hybrid power system It is demonstrated that UWOA technique out per…
Performances of the Fault Decoupling Device when unbalanced and multiple faults occur on distribution systems.
2005
Nowadays industrial processes are largely based on electronic devices such as programmable logic controllers and adjustable speed drives. Consequently, industrial equipments became less tolerant towards power supply disturbances. Voltage dips due to faults are surely among the worst disturbances for industrial equipments. A paper machine can be affected by disturbances of only 10% voltage drop lasting for 100 ms. A voltage dip of 75% (of the nominal voltage) with a duration shorter than 100 ms results in material loss in the range of thousands of US Dollars for semiconductors industry [1].
