The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child's Role in Litigation Before the Committee of Experts of the African Children's Charter
2020
On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, this article contributes to a reflection about the Convention's impact on domestic and international case law by investigating its role in, and implications for, litigation before the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. To this end, the analysis starts by tracing the core aspects of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, and by comparing its content to that of the UN Convention. It then investigates the extent to which, in its practice, the African Committee has engaged with (or, indeed, ignored or overlooked) the UN Convention, and critically assess…
Acute aortic dissection debut as STEMI: A case report
2014
Abstract We submit a case report of a 66-year-old male, with hypertension and family history of cerebrovascular disease, who was referred to our department for right-inferior STEMI. According to the current ESC (European Society of Cardiology) guidelines for the management of STEMI, the patient was conducted to the cath lab to perform primary PCI. Despite the identification of the culprit lesion we had many difficulties during the procedure of angioplasty, so we decided to perform aortography that showed a Stanford type A acute aortic dissection involving the ostium of right coronary artery causing the right-inferior STEMI. In the early phase of a STEMI, exclusion of the presence of aortic …

Exotic insect pests: The impact of the Red Palm Weevil on natural and cultural heritage in Palermo (Italy)
2013
Abstract The impact of invasive exotic pests is increasingly recognised as a global issue. A global strategy to address the exotic pest problem is beginning to evolve, albeit slowly. The International Plant Protection Convention (FAO) has begun the process of harmonizing standards for pest risk analysis to minimise the spread of exotic pests without adversely impacting global trade. However if the impacts of insect invasive species on human health and on agriculture have attracted worldwide attention, researchers and policymakers address directly the connection between invasive species and damage to natural and cultural heritages. The cost of these losses is generally neglected or underesti…
Environmentally Assessing Buildings Characterized by Complex Shape and Innovative Materials
2013
This paper addresses the emerging problem consisting in a correct energy and environmental evaluation of buildings belonging to the new architectural tendency. In fact, innovative buildings are often characterized by new materials that, not rarely, are not contemplated in current environmental databases. Moreover, unconventional shapes of these buildings could require further manufacturing processes that involve additional energy consumption not included in the commercial environmental database. Through the work a spotlighting of the problem is presented with reference to a real innovative building.
