Coordinating action in technology-supported shared tasks: Virtual pointing as a situated practice for mobilizing a response
2021
Drawing on recordings of remote screen-based work meetings in Finland, this conversation analytic study investigates interactive properties of mouse cursor movements in technology-mediated shared tasks. The article illustrates how participants rely on features afforded by the input device in ways that divert from its pre-designed functions to accomplish virtual pointing gestures. These gestures serve as an organizational resource in the precursory phase of action, i.e. when a next on-screen action is observably made relevant. In this sequential environment, pointing by means of the tool is a collaborative resource: an embodied practice for sustaining co-orientation and advancing the sequent…

Communication, mind, and culture : a model of conversation meaning
2002
This dissertation is a theoretical study of conversation meaning. The aim was to build a comprehensive theory of conversation meaning on the basis of the theories of cultural schemas, distributed cognition, and neural networks. The philosophical tradition of transcendental realism was introduced, and a metaphysical analysis of culture was presented. It was concluded that culture belongs to the realm of mind, and culture and society were strictly distinguished. By acknowledging the importance of culture in mind, rarious traditions of conversation research were critically reviewed. It was proposed that conversation is a distributed cognitive system, and the nature of conversation meaning was …
Lingüística perceptiva y conversación: secuencias
1993
Constructing co-presence through shared VR gameplay
2021
This study analyzes how participants playing VR games construct co-presence and shared gameplay. The analysis focuses on instances of play where one person is wearing the VR equipment, and other participants are located nearby without the ability to directly interact with the game. We first show how the active player using the VR equipment draws on talk and embodied activity to signal their presence in the shared physical environment, while simultaneously conducting actions in the virtual space, and thus creates spaces for the other participants to take part in gameplay. Second, we describe how other participants draw on the contextual configurations of the moment in displaying co-presen…
“Congratulations, you’re on TV!”: Middle-space performances of live tweeters during the FIFA World Cup
2018
Social television has transformed the traditional role of the television viewers by providing ‘ordinary people’ access to the public stage. This article describes how public access to television affected the dialogues of Finnish tweeters on Twitter during the massive media event of the FIFA World Cup. Through the lens of digital conversation analysis, the study shows how the media publicity of tweets changed the direction of the interaction between tweeters and transformed their roles vis-à-vis the television show, making one of them into a ‘media flasher’ and the others viewers of his or her performance. The publicity was constructed as important through noticings, congratulations, and com…
Social media and consumer power : Opportunities and challenges for digital marketing activities
2021
Social Media (SM) have not only become an important part of daily life for individuals, governments and organisations but have also transformed the way people work, learn, consume and socially interact. There are many SM uses, posting frequencies and content preferences. User participation also varies from passive to more active behaviours, depending on the motivation for engagement in online conversations. From a marketing perspective, SM have redefined the traditional company - consumer relationship by progressively shifting power from marketing managers to consumers. Organisations are increasingly interested in understanding how SM can benefit (or harm) consumer-brand relationships, incr…
Prior Experience and Student Satisfaction with E-Tandem Language Learning of Spanish and English
2018
Recent literature in the field of foreign language learning has indicated that classroom learning is not necessarily enough for students to acquire proficiency in a foreign language. Learners who achieve a high level in the target language often combine work in the classroom with activities outside it. At the same time, a number of studies indicate that, when foreign language learners do work with their target language beyond the classroom, it is often to practice the receptive skills of reading and listening as opposed to the productive ones of speaking and writing. For this reason, students at The College of New Jersey in the United States and Universidad de Alcalá in Spain were paired up…
