The shift from monologue to dialogue in a couple therapy session: dialogical investigation of change from the therapists' point of view.

As part of a larger research project on couple therapy for depression, this qualitative case study examines the nature of dialogue. Drawing on Bakhtinian concepts, the investigation shows how the conversation shifts from a monologue to dialogue. Among the findings are: first, the process of listening is integral to the transforming experience. That is, the careful listening of the therapist can evoke new voices, just as the experience of one of the partners' "listening in" to the conversation between the other partner and the therapist can create movement and new trajectories. Oral conversational data are deemed to be a relevant empirical source when it comes to formulating and supporting hypotheses about cognitive processes involved in aphasic linguistic production. With this assumption in mind, free conversational uses of the Spanish and Catalan connector QUE by fluent and non-fluent aphasic speakers are examined by contrasting them with normal speakers' (i.e. conversational partners') productions. Strictly ungrammatical uses in aphasic speakers are practically non-existent in free conversation. Nevertheless, this data permits one to characterize the aphasic production of the morpheme QUE as restrictive--to different degrees--with respect to normal production. …
Discourse Analytic Study of Counseling Sessions in Stroke Physiotherapy

Studies on the interaction between physiotherapists and patients during treatment sessions have found low levels of communicative participation by patients and lack of direct influence by patients on the content of their treatment. This article reports the results of 7 counseling sessions in which physiotherapists and patients with stroke and their caregivers discussed the patients' postural control and balance, which had been tested and videotaped at different stages of the rehabilitation process. El presente artículo resume y examina críticamente la propuesta de segmentación del discurso realizada en Briz y Grupo Val.Es.Co (2003). El modelo Val.Es.Co. consta de ocho unidades (discurso, diálogo, intercambio/ alternancia de turnos, intervención/turno, acto y subacto), tres órdenes (social, estructural e informativo) y cuatro posiciones (inicial, media, final e independiente); se caracteriza, además, por ser jerárquico y recursivo. Beatriz.Gallardo@uv.es En este artículo se estudia la problemática de la transición entre turnos. Los silencios, los solapamientos y las interrupciones son los fenómenos más evidentes derivados de las unidades conversacio nales. Se analizan la clasificación y la tipología de estos elementos. El silencio puede clasificarse como pausa, intervalo o lapso, según la posición en la conversación. En los casos de habla simultánea se pueden dar solapamientos colaborativos o competitivos (interrupciones), con una gradación interna regulada por la organización conversacional.

En este artículo el autor trata de estudiar en detalle los elementos conversacionales de un conocido pasaje de la Helena de Eurípides, su connatural asiento en la dicción de la tragedia, su interacción con algunos elementos humorísticos, los problemas que esto plantea y la ponderación de todo ello con una visión ecléctica. As its method, philosophy uses argumentative discussion. Philosophy does not often appeal directly to observations or experiences, although they have a place in argumentation as well. Because philosophy is discursive, it delves in the realms of language and the use of language. Defining concepts is a central theme. The rules and argumentation principles of rational discussion are another cornerstone of philosophy.
