How gender affects gossip and conversation : examining the assumptions in Deborah Tannen's "You just don't understand!" (1990)

2018

Tutkimuksen tuloksia vertailtiin suosittuun, mutta kiisteltyyn Deborah Tannenin You Just Don’t Understand! (1990) teokseen. Tutkimus toteutettiin nettikyselyllä, jota jaettiin erilaisilla sosiaalisen median sivustoilla mahdollisimman laajan otannan takaamiseksi. Vastauksia ol…

The Dual Nature of Spreading Negative eWOM for Branded Offers: Emotional Reaction or Social Response? – A Structured Abstract

2017

The exchange of comments online about branded offers is defined in the literature as electronic word of mouth (eWOM). Most of the existing academic research on consumer behaviour focuses on positive emotions and behaviour about branded offers (Veloutsou and McAlonan 2012; Zarantonello et al. 2016). However, next to sharing positive comments, consumers are increasingly using online media to distribute unfavourable experiences and opinions about products and brands (Ullrich and Brunner 2015), and more research on the effects of the expression of negative comments online is needed. The negative electronic word of mouth (NeWOM) is defined in this study as negative statements made or distributed…

Artificial Social Ethics: Simulating Culture, Conflict, and Cooperation

2020

In recent years advances in computational modeling and social simulation technologies have enabled scientists to identify some of the conditions under which – and the mechanisms by which – conflict and cooperation within and across human cultures are likely to emerge. There are significant ethical concerns surrounding the increased capacity and growing use of such computer tools to guide public policy discussions. The purpose of this paper is to propose and promote an "artificial social ethics" approach to addressing these concerns and illustrate its application in relation to three agent-based models implemented within the Artificial Society Analytics Platform. We conclude with a brief dis…

The Challenge of Mutual Competence Building

2015

Mutual Competence Building has emerged as a key concept when working on this book with our colleagues at the University of Agder. In this conclusion we develop and explore the concept further in relation to sustainability. Our point of departure is the definition we presented in the introduction: mutual competence building is a conversation between scholars and societal and work life partner organisations about what sustainability, and efforts to create a sustainable society, might entail for distinct sectors.

Humour in EFL classrooms : a comparative case study between elementary and secondary school lessons

2014

Tutkimus on vertaileva, sillä tavoitteena on kuvailla oppilaiden luokka-asteen yhteyttä käytetyn huumorin määrään, huumorilajiin ja siihen onko huumori opettaja- vai oppilasaloitteista.

THE CIVIC SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS OF CONTEMPORARY SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN THE ASPECT OF THE HUMANISTIC PARADIGM OF EDUCATION

2020

Civic self-consciousness is a topical issue in present-day Latvia. After regaining of independence and joining the European Union, there appeared an opportunity to ensure real freedom and genuine democracy for all inhabitants in Latvia. Thus, new conditions were created for the development of civic self-consciousness in senior secondary school students. New guidelines are developed in the European system of education according to the new understanding of humanism.  The key reference-point is the understanding that the main goal of education is to support the development of personality that will become an EU citizen and a professional. The study established that it is necessary to develop ci…

(In)congruence between presupposing teacher turns and the student’s epistemic stance : case analysis of teacher turns that presuppose the student to …

2017

Episteemisyyden eli tietoon pääsyn tutkiminen luokkahuonevuorovaikutuksessa on kasvattanut suosiotaan keskustelunanalyyttisessa tutkimuksessa viime vuosina. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoitus on lisätä tietoa episteemisyydestä luokkahuonevuorovaikutuksessa.
