Design, implementation and experimental results of a wireless charger for E-bikes
2019
Based on the Inductive Power Transfer (IPT), the wireless energy transmission is increasingly representing an attractive solution for vehicle battery charging. Due to its high smartness, the wireless solution may be considered an interesting battery charging method for electric bicycles, as they represent light-weight and flexible means of transportation. According to the Vehicle-To-Grid (V2G) concept, the wireless power flow can occur in both the alternative directions: from the grid to the battery or in the opposite way. A Bi-Directional Inductive Power Transfer (BDIPT) system is therefore particularly convenient in the scenario of a multi-parking area. For the E-bike application, a bicyc…
Testing a linear ironless generator for the sea wave energy harvesting
2022
Wave energy represents a "new entry"in the renewable energy sector; however, it is believed that in near future sea wave might have a key role for the electrical energy production, thanks its huge energy potential. In this context, the paper suggests an innovative ironless linear generator, that can be used as main component inside a point absorber. In order to exploit the wave energy potential in the Mediterranean Sea, the Engineering Department of Palermo University realized a first small-scale prototype of the electrical linear generator, that is the main component for the energy conversion.
Architecture of a digital PFM controller for IC implementation
2006
This paper presents a digital controller architecture oriented to IC implementation. The classical digital pulse width modulator (D-PWM), using digital analog converter (DAC), is replaced with a Sigma-Delta (/spl Sigma//spl Delta/) modulator based on pulse frequency modulator (PFM) technique. Results of an investigation from a prototype for DC-DC converter, in terms of simulated and experimental performances, are reported, together with harmonic frequency investigation. The control function design is implemented on a field programmable gate array (FPGA). As a consequence of good agreement between simulated and experimental results, the proposed architecture realizes a digital control loop w…

On the design of a multiple-output DC/DC converter for the PHI experiment on-board of solar orbiter
2013
Power converters for experiments that have to fly on board space missions (satellite, launchers, etc.) have very stringent requirements due to its use in a very harsh environment. The selection of a suitable topology is therefore not only based on standard requirements but additional more strict ones have also to be fulfilled. This work shows the design procedure followed to build the Power Converter Module (PCM) for the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (SO/PHI), experiment on board the Solar Orbiter Satellite. The selected topology has been a Push-Pull, for a power level of approximately 35 W and with seven output voltages. Galvanic isolation is needed from primary to secondary, but no…
Synthetic Inertia Impact on Inter-Area Oscillations of the Continental Europe Power System
2020
The overall kinetic energy reduction due to increasing share of converter-interfaced generation (CIG) has been investigated so far by several works for systems of different types and sizes. The so called synthetic inertia is one of the most common and reviewed solutions to the issue of system inertia reduction. The paper investigates the effects of synthetic inertia as frequency service provided by the CIG sources for the Continental Europe (CE) synchronous area using a detailed large scale dynamic model. The model - provided in the basic form by the System Protection & Dynamics (SP&D) group of the ENTSOE - is properly developed substituting a determined amount of synchronous machin…
Experimental Prototyping of a Microgrid with Mechanical Point of Common Coupling
2020
The smartgrid is a key technology for the sustainable and smart utilization of the renewable energies. In this paper, a prototyping of a microgrid, assembled at the Sustainable Development and Energy Saving Laboratory (SDESLAB) of the University of Palermo, is presented and discussed. In detail, the microgrid presents only one mechanical point of common coupling (PCC) with the main grid and it is electrically separated from the main grid. In this way, the voltage variations of the main grid do not affect the microgrid electric quantities behavior. In order to validate the effectiveness of the voltage and frequency control, several experimental tests and analysis have been carried out. In de…
Design of a LLC Resonant Converter for Powering a PEM Electrolyzer
2021
International audience; This paper proposes the design of a LLC resonant converter to supply a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer. The PEM requires a low voltage with high current, a reduced output voltage ripple, and an overdamped dynamic behavior of the converter to avoid voltage overshoots. The designed converter allows satisfying the design constraints, minimizing switching and reverse recovery losses; the efficiency is influenced mainly by the output rectifier's conduction losses.
Design and simulation of efficient combinational circuits based on a new XOR structure in QCA technology
2021
AbstractQuantum-dot cellular automata (QCA), due to its unique characteristics like low power consumption, nanoscale design, and high computing speed is considered as an emerging technology, and it can be used as an alternative for CMOS technology in circuit design for quantum computers in the near future. XOR gate has many applications in the design of digital circuits in QCA. In this paper, an efficient novel structure of XOR gate is proposed in QCA. Also, a novel 1-bit comparator circuit, 1-bit full adder, binary to gray and gray to binary convertor code based on the proposed XOR is designed and simulated using QCADesigner 2.0.3. The simulation results demonstrated that the proposed stru…
