When tubules aggregate
2011
Within muscle fibres, tubules appear as microtubules, transverse tubules, and different components of the sarcotubular system, the latter consisting of longitudinal tubules and lateral or terminal sacs which, at special junctional connections, are situated on both sides of transverse tubules forming triads. Pathological structures related to the transverse tubules are honeycomb structures, both the transverse tubules and the honeycomb ones being labelled by extracellularly applied lanthanum [1] or potassium ferrocyanide [2], thus, indicating an open connection between the interior of the muscle fibres and the extracellular space. Dyads or multiple incomplete or complete forms of triads, pen…
Sialodochoplasty in the treatment of salivary-duct stricture in chronic sialoadenitis: technique and results
2007
PURPOSE: This study was undertaken to investigate peroral balloon angioplasty of salivary-duct strictures (sialodochoplasty) in chronic sialadenitis, analysing the technique, results and limitations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine patients underwent sialodochoplasty: seven for Stensen''s-duct strictures and two for Wharton''s-duct strictures. One patient had a double stricture of Stensen''s duct and another a salivary stone associated with a Wharton''s-duct stricture. All patients were subjected to preliminary sialography to evaluate stricture site, length and grade. Sialodochoplasty was performed after local anaesthesia and progressive dilation of the salivary-duct orifice. RESULTS: The stric…
Effects of Constant and Doublet Frequency Electrical Stimulation Patterns on Force Production of Knee Extensor Muscles
2016
International audience; This study compared knee extensors' neuromuscular fatigue in response to two 30-minute stimulation patterns: constant frequency train (CFT) and doublet frequency train (DFT). Fifteen men underwent two separate sessions corresponding to each pattern. Measurements included torque evoked by each contraction and maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) measured before and immediately after the stimulation sessions. In addition, activation level and torque evoked during doublets (Pd) and tetanic contractions at 80-Hz (P80) and 20-Hz (P20) were determined in six subjects. Results indicated greater mean torque during the DFT stimulation session as compared with CFT. But, no dif…
Increased calcium influx is responsible for the sustained mechanical tone in colon from dystrophic (mdx) mice
2001
Abstract Background & Aims: Proximal colon from dystrophic mice develops spontaneous tone increment, but the mechanisms involved in its development have not been investigated. This study examined whether alterations in the properties of cell membrane calcium channels and/or sarcoplasmic reticular (SR) Ca 2+ -adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) contribute to tone development. Methods: Effects of calcium-free solution, nifedipine, pinaverium (calcium channel blockers), and cyclopiazonic acid (CPA; SR Ca 2+ -ATPase inhibitor) on the contractile activity of colon from mdx and control mice were determined. Results Calcium-free solution abolished spontaneous contractions in both preparations, but d…
Chest Surgery for Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Individuals
2018
Chest surgery can greatly facilitate the experience of living in a gender role. For transfeminine chest surgery, most surgeons recommend a 12-month period of feminizing hormone therapy prior to breast augmentation. For those who already have some breast volume due to hormone treatment, lipofilling can be a good option. Transmasculine chest surgery includes mastectomy and creation of a male chest. Preoperative parameters to be evaluated include breast volume, degree of excess skin, nipple-areola complex size and position, and skin elasticity. The algorithm the authors developed and modified can help choose from 5 techniques, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing male chest.
Variability in protein binding of teicoplanin and achievement of therapeutic drug monitoring targets in critically ill patients: Lessons from the DAL…
2014
The aims of this study were to describe the variability in protein binding of teicoplanin in critically ill patients as well as the number of patients achieving therapeutic target concentrations. This report is part of the multinational pharmacokinetic DALI Study. Patients were sampled on a single day, with blood samples taken both at the midpoint and the end of the dosing interval. Total and unbound teicoplanin concentrations were assayed using validated chromatographic methods. The lower therapeutic range of teicoplanin was defined as total trough concentrations from 10 to 20 mg/L and the higher range as 10-30 mg/L. Thirteen critically ill patients were available for analysis. The followi…
Interface Models for the Analysis of Time-Dependent Effects in Masonry Structures
2001
The present paper is devoted to the theoretical formulation and numerical implementation of an interface model suitable to simulate the behavior of cementitious joints at long term. The interface laws are formulated in the framework of viscoplasticity for non standard materials in order to simulate the time-dependent softening response which occurs along the decohesion process in presence of shear and tension tractions. The interface model parameters identification is discussed on the base of experimental data reported in the literature. The optimization problem related to the parameters evaluation is approached by a heuristic algorithm. Finally some examples show the capabilities of the pr…
Elastic-Viscoplastic Solids Subjected to Thermal and Loading Cycles
1995
— A class of elastic-viscoplastic materials with dual internal variables, thermodynamic potential and temperature-dependent plastic and creep data is considered. For solids (or structures) of such materials, subjected to cyclic loads and temperature variations, the existence of a steady-state response is ascertained and its periodicity characteristics established. Particular steady-state responses, like, elastic and inelastic shakedown, are addressed. By means of a sensitivity analysis of the steady cycle with respect to the load parameter changes, a number of basic features of inelastic shakedown (the viscoplastic counterpart of plastic shakedown) are also addressed.
Friction Stir Welding of steels process design through a continuum based fem model
2009
AbstractFriction stir welding (FSW) has been reaching a continuously increasing popularity among joining processes since its invention in 1991. Although mainly used for aluminium alloys, it has been successfully applied also to steels. In the present paper, a continuum based FEM model for FSW of steels is proposed, which is three-dimensional Lagrangian implicit, coupled, rigid viscoplastic. The model, whose potential has been analysed through temperature distribution comparisons, is able to predict temperature, strain and strain rate distributions, together with thermal and mechanical loads on the welding tool, at varying main process variables. In this way, the FEM model can be used for pr…
Material Flow in FSW of AA7075 - T6 butt joint: numerical simulations and experimental verifications
2006
Friction stir welding (FSW) has reached a large interest in the scientific community and in the recent years also in the industrial environment, owing to the advantages of such solid state welding process with respect to the classic ones. Advanced finite element method tools are needed in order to develop an effective engineering of the processes; quantitative results can be acquired from numerical simulations once the basic information such as the material flow is certain. A 3D Lagrangian implicit coupled rigid viscoplastic model has already been developed by the authors to simulate FSW of butt joints. In the present paper the material flow in the FSW of AA7075–T6 butt joints is investigat…
