Polyphosphate, the physiological metabolic fuel for corneal cells: a potential biomaterial for ocular surface repair
2019
The regeneration of the epithelium, covering the avascular cornea, involves the processes of differentiation, proliferation and migration of cells originating from the corneal epithelial stem cells. We ask the question if these energy-consuming processes can be fueled by the physiological, inorganic polyphosphate (polyP), the main energy storage/donor molecule in the extracellular space. The ex vivo results reveal that addition of polyP, in the form of soluble Na-polyP, to the culture medium elicits a strong stimulatory effect on cell viability/growth and migration of corneal epithelial cells. Microscopic analyses of partially denuded cornea specimens show that in the presence of polyP, but…
Utilization of metabolic energy in treatment of ocular surface disorders: polyphosphate as an energy source for corneal epithelial cell proliferation.
2019
Impaired regeneration of the corneal epithelium, as found in many ocular surface diseases, is a major clinical problem in ophthalmology. We hypothesized that corneal epithelial regeneration can be promoted by the physiological, energy-delivering as well as “morphogenetically active” polymer, inorganic polyphosphate (polyP). Corneal limbal explants (diameter, 4 mm) were cultivated on collagen-coated well plates in the absence or presence of polyP (chain length, ∼40 Pi units; 50 μg ml−1) or human platelet lysate (hp-lysate; 5% v/v). Cell outgrowth and differentiation were analyzed after staining with DRAQ5 (nuclei) and rhodamine phalloidin (cytoskeleton), as well as by environmental scanning …
Charipinae (Hymenoptera: Cynipoidea: Figitidae) from Mexico with Description of Three New Species
2013
Abstract Charipinae collected in different regions of Mexico have been studied. Twelve species are cited for the first time: Alloxysta arcuata (Kieffer, 1902), Alloxysta brevis (Thomson, 1862), Alloxysta castanea (Hartig, 1841), Alloxysta fuscicornis (Hartig, 1841), Alloxysta mullensis (Cameron, 1883) ; Alloxysta victrix (Westwood, 1833 ); Phaenoglyphis americanaBaker, 1896; Phaenoglyphis calvertiAndrews, 1978; Phaenoglyphis falcataAndrews, 1978; Phaenoglyphis stenosAndrews, 1978; Phaenoglyphis stricta (Thomson, 1877); and Phaenoglyphis villosa (Hartig, 1841). Three new species are described: Alloxysta evenhuisi Ferrer-Suay & Pujade-Villar n. sp., Alloxysta mexicana Ferrer-Suay & Pu…
Retention of aroma compounds in starch matrices: competitions between aroma compounds toward amylose and amylopectin
2002
International audience; The retention of three aroma compounds-isoamyl acetate, ethyl hexanoate, and linalool--from starch-containing model food matrices was measured by headspace analysis, under equilibrium conditions. We studied systems containing standard or waxy corn starch with one or two aroma compounds. The three studied aroma compounds interact differently: ethyl hexanoate and linalool form complexes with amylose, and isoamyl acetate cannot. However, in systems containing one aroma compound, we observed with both starches a significant retention of the three molecules. These results indicate that amylopectin could play a role in the retention of aroma. In systems containing two arom…
Comparative Analyses for Gluten-Free Biscuits from Mixture Oat and Corn
2018
Abstract Gluten-free products are necessary for the people suffering from celiac disease or having a sensibility for products containing gluten. The aim of this study was to prepare and evaluate gluten free biscuits made from a mixture of flours (50% corn flour and 50% oat flour) with various fats (palm fat, coconut oil) and sweeteners (sugar, stevioside with erythritol). Sample biscuits were made and then analyzed to find out the moisture, water activity, braking point, specific volume and sensory evaluation. All samples had the moisture close to 5-6%. Water activity ranged from 0.49 to 0.71. The breaking point was higher for sample prepared with palm fat and sugar (0.43). This sample was …
Alteration of a Cry1A Shared Binding Site in a Cry1Ab-Selected Colony of Ostrinia furnacalis
2022
The Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenée, 1854), is a highly damaging pest in Asia and the Pacific islands, and larvae feed mainly from corn crops. To determine the suitability of Bt-corn technology for the future control of this pest, understanding the potential to develop resistance to Cry1Ab and the basis of cross-resistance to other Cry1 proteins is of great interest. Here, we have explored the binding of Cry1A proteins to brush border membrane vesicles from two O. furnacalis colonies, one susceptible (ACB-BtS) and one laboratory-selected with Cry1Ab (ACB-AbR). The insects developed resistance to Cry1Ab and showed cross-resistance to Cry1Aa, Cry1Ac, and Cry1F. Binding assays wi…
Tributo al professor Miguel F. Refojo, PhD, DSc (1928---2016)
2016
[Excerpt] July 21, 2016, Professor Miguel F. Refojo passed away at the age of 88 in Needham (Massachusetts). Saying that Miguel was one of the most renowned Spanish scientists of the second half of the XXth Century does not resembles its actual scientific size. Indeed, Miguel (or “Migüel” as most of his American friends pronounced his name) was a World Class scientist and inventor that will be forever linked to the advances in polymer science applied to the ophthalmic environment. His contributions in the biomedical field start “officially” in 1967 according to the National Library of Medline database (Pubmed-Medline). [...]
III 26 (Vixi puellis nuper idoneus). This paper offers the analysis of Carmina Burana (CB) 93a (Cum…
Calcification is not the Achilles' heel of cold-water corals in an acidifying ocean
2015
Ocean acidification is thought to be a major threat to coral reefs: laboratory evidence and CO2 seep research has shown adverse effects on many coral species, although a few are resilient. There are concerns that cold-water corals are even more vulnerable as they live in areas where aragonite saturation (?ara) is lower than in the tropics and is falling rapidly due to CO2 emissions. Here, we provide laboratory evidence that net (gross calcification minus dissolution) and gross calcification rates of three common cold-water corals, Caryophyllia smithii, Dendrophyllia cornigera, and Desmophyllum dianthus, are not affected by pCO2 levels expected for 2100 (pCO2 1058 ?atm, ?ara 1.29), and nor a…
