Locust neuropeptides stimulating sex pheromone production in female European corn borer moth, Ostrinia nubilalis

1990

Abstract The presence of a pheromonotropically active hormone (PBAN-like substance) from locust organs, ( Locusta migratoria ) has been demonstrated. Extracts of brain, corpora cardiaca, corpora allata, suboesophageal ganglia and thoracic ganglia of L. migratoria caused highly pheromonotropic responses in decapitated females of the European corn borer moth ( Ostrinia nubilalis ). The highest activity per unit weight of tissue was found in the corpora cardiaca and corpora allata of the locust followed by the brain plus suboesophageal ganglion of O. nubilalis . Following 8 days of disconnection, separating the corpora allata from the corpora cardiaca and suboesophageal ganglion, the pheromono…

Evaluation of a new nomogram for Ferrara ring segment implantation in keratoconus

2021

AIM: To evaluate the short-term clinical outcomes of Ferrara rings in keratoconus using an optimized nomogram developed after several years of research and retrospective analysis of clinical data. METHODS: This prospective longitudinal non-comparative clinical trial evaluated 88 eyes of 88 patients (age 18-62y) with keratoconus diagnosis from two Spanish centers. Ferrara ring segment (AJL Ophthalmic) implantation was performed in all cases, using the mechanical procedure in 25 eyes (28.4%) and a femtosecond laser-assisted procedure in 63 eyes (71.6%). The ring segments implanted in each case were selected using a new optimized nomogram that considered variables such as anterior corneal asph…

Study of the formation of carbonyl compounds in edible oils and fats by 1H-NMR and FTIR

1999

Abstract Oils and fats start decomposing from the moment they are isolated from their natural environment. Heating accelerates oxidative rancidity and frying at high temperatures produces thermal degradation with the formation of decomposition products, such as aldehydes, ketones, free acids and hydroxilic compounds that in high levels can be harmful to human health. The decomposition products formed up to 300°C were determined by means of 1 H-NMR spectroscopy and an FTIR spectroscopic method was developed for the quantification of carbonyl compounds generated during heating. The results show that there is a formation of carbonyl compounds starting at 150°C and when the sample was heated at…

Teschoviruses and sapeloviruses in faecal samples from wild boar in Spain

2013

Teschovirus and Sapelovirus are two genera of the Picornaviridae family, comprising highly variable and heterogeneous enteric viruses, commonly found in faecal samples from domestic pigs. Although both of them are also known to infect wild boar, studies on their presence in these wild suids are scarce. The present study aimed at determining the presence of porcine teschovirus (PTV) and sapelovirus (PSV) in free-living wild boar populations, as well as to study their relationships with similar viruses present in pigs. Fresh faecal samples (n = 63) from wild boar were collected in Doñana Biological Reserve (SW Spain) during 2007 and 2011, and analysed using multiplex RT-PCR for the simultaneo…

Microcnemum coralloides (Chenopodiaceae- Salicornioideae): an example of intraspecific East-West disjunctions in the Mediterranean…

2008

Kadereit, G. & A.E. Yaprak. 2008. Microcnemum coralloides (Chenopodiaceae-Salicornioideae): an example of intraspecific East-West disjunctions in the Mediterranean region. Anales Jard. Bot. Madrid 65(2): 415-426. Microcnemum is a monotypic genus of Salicornioideae comprising rare, annual, hygrohalophytic herbs growing in hypersaline inland lagoons and salt pans. Microcnemum coralloides shows an East-West disjunction in the Mediterranean region: M. coralloides subsp. coralloides occurs in central and eastern Spain while M. coralloides subsp. anatolicum grows in Turkey, Syria, Armenia and Iran. We studied the phylogeny, biogeography and morphological differentiation of M. coralloides. Molecul…

Direct electricity production from Avgas UL91 fuel

2016

As fuel for fuel cells can be used various substances, but generally fuel cells are powered by hydrogen. However, problems with the storage of hydrogen are the reason for the search of new fuels for fuel cells. The paper presents the possibility of using Avgas fuel as fuel for fuel cell. The Avgas does not have the feature of electrical conductivity, for this reason a detergent (nonionic surfactant) was used for dissolving fuel in an electrolyte. The work shows possible electrooxidation of Avgas fuel emulsion prepared on the basis of a nonionic surfactant on a platinum electrode in an aqueous solution of H2SO4. As non-ionic surfactant was used the detergent Syntanol DS-10. The emulsion was …

Schematic eye models to mimic the behavior of the accommodating human eye

2018

A simplified version of the human eye is known as schematic eye model. Since the first attempts in the middle of the 19th century, numerous approaches describing new schematic eye models have been introduced. Some of them are able to describe the accommodation ability of the human eye. Accommodative schematic eyes could be of great interest since they are able to explain the functionality of the human eye and they can be easily used for different research purposes. Some of these include the design and testing of multifocal ophthalmic solutions, evaluation of the effect of optical aberrations on the retinal image quality, and study of the optical performance of the eye at different distances…
