Students' Perceptions of Forest Industries Business Ethics - A Comparative Analysis of Finland and the USA
2010
It has been recognised that personal values have a significant impact on views of business ethics. The basic purpose of this paper is to describe and compare student perceptions of business ethics in Finland and the USA. Another objective is to examine the value dimensions of students and the interrelationships between these values and views of business ethics. The following results have been found in this study: 1) US students generally represent more individualistic and harder values, whereas the Finnish students represent more collectivistic and softer values; 2) US students are less concerned about the weight of multiple responsibilities in the forest industries than their Finnish count…
A Critical Review of Relations between Corporate Responsibility Research and Practice
2007
This essay identifies epistemological, theoretical and methodological problems in a potentially influential subset of the interdisciplinary corporate responsibility literature, that which appears in the management literature. The received conceptualization of stakeholder analysis is criticised by identifying six sets of factors conventionally considered as promoting social responsibilities in the firm: inter-organizational factors, economic competitors, institutional investors, end-consumers, government regulators and non-governmental organizations. Each is addressed on conceptual grounds, its empirical salience in terms of the latest relevant research and prospects to be a significant fact…
The Past, History, and Corporate Social Responsibility
2020
An emerging body of research recognizes the importance of the past and history for corporate social responsibility (CSR) scholarship and practice. However, the meanings that scholars and practitioners can ascribe to the past and history differ fundamentally, posing challenges to the integration of history and CSR thinking. This essay reviews diverse approaches and proposes a broad conceptualization of the relationship between the past, history, and CSR. We suggest historical CSR as an umbrella term that comprises three distinct theoretical perspectives. The “past-of-CSR” perspective is concerned with the history of CSR and business ethics as a set of concepts and practices. The “past-in-CSR…
Social Responsibility as Displacement of Capitalism: Evidences from Banks in Brazil
2007
The purpose of the study is to understand the dynamics of institutionalizing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the Field of Banking Organizations in Brazil. By means of a social analytical model proposed by Boltanski & Chiapello (1999), and retrieving the conceptual bases of the institutional approach and using the notion of interest in Bourdieu (1996), we arrived at an analytical model that enabled us to understand CSR as part of a movement to displace capitalism. We defend the theory that when institutionalizing CSR, the actions are justifiable in terms of the common good, legitimizing it by tests and structural arrangements while at the same time serving interests inherent to the …
Between Private and Public : Corporate art collecting and collaboration with art museums in Finland
2021
In this chapter, I discuss corporate art collections as part of national cultural heritage and semi-public collections. Corporate art is seen through the lenses of collecting, various professions and corporate social responsibility (CSR). I highlight the motives and the meanings of visual art in the context of business and practices of collection development, with the similarities and differences to museums and the museum profession. The essence of corporate art collecting is connected with business objectives, and thus this field of collecting differs in many ways from the objectives of museum collections and ethics. The main motives for corporate art collecting are aesthetics, well-being,…
Not just for the sake of a report : enhancing corporate social responsibility reporting by involving stakeholders
2015
The purpose of this study was to find out if it is possible to improve the case organisation’s corporate social responsibility reporting by involving stakeholders. The research was conducted as a case study in Helen Ltd, a Finnish energy utility, and it focuses on the stakeholder views of the case company. The frame of reference for the study is stakeholder theory. The literature review focuses especially on the role of stakeholder involvement in corporate social responsibility reporting. The research data was gathered using a multiple strategy approach via an online survey and a workshop. The data was analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively using content analysis. In the analysis, t…
‘The will to not be empowered (according to your rules)’: Resistance in Finnish participatory social policy
2018
Participation has increasingly become a means and an end for successful and ‘empowering’ social policy. Building on previous governmentality critiques of participatory initiatives, this article investigates practices of resistance in the context of Finnish participatory social policy. I adopt a Foucauldian counter-conducts approach as my lens to study critical speech as a form of resistance in initiatives that invite marginalised people as ‘experts-by-experience’ in social welfare organisations. I illustrate how practices of governing and resistance are intertwined and mutually dependent in a much subtler and more practical manner than allows the often-used analytical dichotomy between domi…
