Fecondazione e generazione secondo i medici ippocratici.

Il contributo affronta il tema dell'apporto del pensiero medico antico, in particolare della medicina ippocratica, alle concezioni fiorite tra VI e V secolo in tema di fecondazione e generazione umana con specifico riferimento alla teorizzazione in materia del filosofo Parmenide. Accogliendo in larga parte le teorie, per altro diffuse anche in ambito non specificamente medico, sulla generazione basate sull'affermazione del principio dell'esistenza di un seme sia maschile che femminile, i medici ippocratici hanno optato per una concezione della generazione in cui l'apporto della madre non è considerato inferiore a quello del padre.

Biometry of the fetal corpus callosum by three-dimensional ultrasound

Objectives To construct reference ranges of quantitative characteristics of the fetal corpus callosum. Methods Women referred to a tertiary center for sonographic examination were recruited to undergo a detailed fetal scan from 17 to 41 weeks of gestation. Three-dimensional (3D) sonographic volumes of normal fetal brains were acquired and analyzed offline. We obtained three different measurements of the corpus callosal length, as well as the height (/thickness) of its segments, namely the rostrum, genu, body and splenium. Results Initially we recruited 604 pregnant women, of whom 138 were excluded because of various disorders/abnormalities, multiple pregnancy or gestational age < 18 weeks. …

Evaluation of P-glycoprotein (abcb1a/b) modulation of [18F]fallypride in MicroPET imaging studies

[(18)F]Fallypride ([(18)F]FP) is an important and routinely used D2/D3 antagonist for quantitative imaging of dopaminergic neurotransmission in vivo. Recently it was shown that the brain uptake of the structurally related [(11)C]raclopride is modulated by P-glycoprotein (P-gp), an important efflux transporter at the blood-brain barrier. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the brain uptake of [(18)F]FP is influenced by P-gp. The brain is completely surrounded by the bony skull and its closely adherent, tough, dural inner lining. This converts the enclosed space into a watertight chamber with the exception of the small, basally situated foramen magnum. In adults, these factors combine to prevent the skull from expanding. Consequently, the intracranial volume cannot fluctuate. In addition, the intracranial contents — blood, brain, and spinal fluid — are essentially noncompressible.

Several recent discoveries, notably from cognitive neuroscience, have had repercussions in the humanities and more particularly in the linguistics’ field. Biofilm formation byCandida albicansmutants for genes coding fungal proteins exhibiting the eight-cysteine-containing CFEM domain

Several features and functions of a Candida albicans gene, PGA10 (also designated as RBT51), coding for a putative polypeptide species belonging to a subset of fungal proteins containing an eight-cysteine domain referred as CFEM (Common in several Fungal Extracellular Membrane proteins), are described. The ORF of the gene (ORF19.5674) encoded a protein of 250 amino acids, with a predicted molecular mass of 25.17 kDa. The product of the PGA10 gene also exhibited some features reminiscent of a class II-type hydrophobin. Some biological features of Candida albicans mutants for genes coding fungal proteins containing the CFEM domain

Several biological features of Candida albicans genes (PGA10, RBT5 and CSA1) coding for putative polypeptide species belonging to a subset of fungal proteins containing an eight-cysteine domain referred as common in several fungal extracellular membrane (CFEM) are described. The deletion of these genes resulted in a cascade of pleiotropic effects. Thus, mutant strains exhibited higher cell surface hydrophobicity levels and an increased ability to bind to inert or biological substrates.
