Aristotelian Cross-References Network

2014

In this paper, I suggest to use the cross-references that can be found in Aristotle's works as hyperlinks. Drawing a map of Aristotle's works on the basis of these cross-references, it will possible to build an interface to navigate inside Aristotle's corpus and to reconstruct a network of the connections among several layers of his philosophical and scientific project.

Matter and Form in Sixteenth-Century Spain: Some Case Studies

2012

In the last few decades, scholars have rethought the history of matter theories in important ways, particularly with respect to the sources, origins and antecedents of atomism and corpuscularianism in the seventeenth century. In particular, recent commentators have shown that the supposed opposition between atomism and Aristotelianism is insufficient for understanding the historical development of matter theories and their conceptual plurality. Along with corpuscular doctrines dating back to Antiquity, such as those of Heron or Asclepiades, well treated in Lasswitz’s classic work, certain aspects of the Aristotelian corpus and tradition have contributed in important ways to subsequent corpu…

Pyramidal and nonpyramidal callosal cells in the striate cortex of the adult rat

1994

The aim of this study has been to determine the neuronal types (pyramidal and nonpyramidal) within the rat's visual cortex, which project through the corpus callosum. To this end, the morphology and laminar distribution of callosal cells have been investigated by combining Diamidino Yellow retrograde tracing with intracellular injection of Lucifer Yellow in slightly fixed tissue slices. The visual callosal projection arises from pyramidal cells of diverse morphology in layers II to VIb, as well as from several modified pyramids located mainly in layers II, IV (star pyramids) and VIb (horizontal or inverted pyramids and related forms of spiny stellate cells). Our results indicate that in rat…

Evaluation of the Role of Candida albicans Agglutinin-Like Sequence (Als) Proteins in Human Oral Epithelial Cell Interactions

2012

The fungus C. albicans uses adhesins to interact with human epithelial surfaces in the processes of colonization and pathogenesis. The C. albicans ALS (agglutinin-like sequence) gene family encodes eight large cell-surface glycoproteins (Als1-Als7 and Als9) that have adhesive function. This study utilized C. albicans Δals mutant strains to investigate the role of the Als family in oral epithelial cell adhesion and damage, cytokine induction and activation of a MAPK-based (MKP1/c-Fos) signaling pathway that discriminates between yeast and hyphae. Of the eight Δals mutants tested, only the Δals3 strain showed significant reductions in oral epithelial cell adhesion and damage, and cytokine pro…

Candida albicans Yeast and Hyphae are Discriminated by MAPK Signaling in Vaginal Epithelial Cells

2011

We previously reported that a bi-phasic innate immune MAPK response, constituting activation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) phosphatase MKP1 and c-Fos transcription factor, discriminates between the yeast and hyphal forms of Candida albicans in oral epithelial cells (ECs). Since the vast majority of mucosal Candida infections are vaginal, we sought to determine whether a similar bi-phasic MAPK-based immune response was activated by C. albicans in vaginal ECs. Here, we demonstrate that vaginal ECs orchestrate an innate response to C. albicans via NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways. However, unlike in oral ECs, the first MAPK response, defined by c-Jun transcription factor acti…

Using a Multi-Locus Microsatellite Typing method improved phylogenetic distribution of Candida albicans isolates but failed to demonstrate associatio…

2012

EA MERS CT3 Enjeu 3; International audience; The dimorphic yeast Candida albicans is a component of the normal microflora at the mucosal surfaces of healthy individuals. It possesses an array of phenotypic properties considered as virulence traits that contribute to pathogenicity of the yeast in immuno-compromised patients. We addressed the question of the pathogenicity of lineages of C. albicans with regard to their genotype in three series of C. albicans isolates (a series of commensal isolates collected in healthy individuals, a group of bloodstream isolates and a group of non-bloodstream clinical isolates) using a Multi-Locus Microsatellite Typing (MLMT) approach based on the analysis o…

Early impairment of epigenetic pattern in neurodegeneration: Additional mechanisms behind pyrethroid toxicity

2019

Abstract Permethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid extensively used as anti-woodworm agent and for indoor and outdoor pest control. The main route of human exposure is through fruit, vegetable and milk intake. Low dosage exposure to permethrin during neonatal brain development (from postnatal day 6 to postnatal day 21) leads to dopamine decrease in rat striatum nucleus, oxidative stress and behavioural changes linked to the development of Parkinson's like neurodegeneration later in life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of genes involved in the dopaminergic pathway and epigenetic regulatory mechanisms in adolescent rats treated with permethrin during neonatal brain developmen…

Regional differences in mu-opioid receptor-dependent modulation of basal dopamine transmission in rat striatum

2016

Abstract The nigrostriatal dopamine system is implicated in the regulation of reward and motor activity. Dopamine (DA) release in dorsal striatum (DS) is controlled by the firing rate of DA neurons in substantia nigra pars compacta. However, influences at terminal level, such as those involving activation of mu opioid receptors (MORs), can play a key role in determining DA levels in striatum. Nonetheless, published data also suggest that the effect of opioid drugs on DA levels may differ depending on the DS subregion analyzed. In this study, in vivo microdialysis in rats was used to explore this regional dependence. Changes in basal DA levels induced by local retrodialysis application of DA…
