GENDER IN VIDEO GAMES: CREATIVITY FOR INCLUSIVITY
2022
Video game localisation, a field highly impacted by the lack of visual environment and text linearity, forces translators to create inclusive solutions in terms of gender to overcome the hurdles created by variables. This paper will introduce the specificities of this sector and present an analysis of some of those techniques extracted from parallel corpora compiled from video games that include female, transgender, non-binary, and non-sexualised characters. LE GENRE DANS LES JEUX VIDÉO : LA CRÉATIVITÉ POUR L'INCLUSIVITÉ La localisation de jeux vidéo, un domaine très impacté par l’absence d’accès au jeu ainsi que par …
Du gommage de l’infinitif dans la traduction polonaise de l’infinitive de Compte rendu de Perception (ICP): entre grammaire style et representation d…
2021
The study subject are Polish translations of the French structure NP1 + voir + NP2 + infinitive; we reject cases where the NP1 is represented by the pronoun on, and concentrate on translations in which the infinitive is not rendered. The analysis is based on the corpus of texts embracing 58 pairs of examples, each of which contains a French sentence with the investigated construction and a Polish sentence with its equivalent. Our aim is to identify factors which make translators erase the French infinitive. The conducted analysis reveals that the avoided infinitives belong to two groups: appearance verbs and dynamic position verbs; the most frequent are surgir (‘appear suddenly’), arriver (…

Touristic promotion in parallel and comparable corpora: differences in persuasion through interpersonality in English and Spanish websites
2013
This research is part of the COMETVAL project that aims …

Annotated Video Corpus of FinSL with Kinect and Computer-Vision Data
2016
This paper presents an annotated video corpus of Finnish Sign Language (FinSL) to which has been appended Kinect and computer-vision data. The video material consists of signed retellings of the stories Snowman and Frog, where are you?, elicited from 12 native FinSL signers in a dialogue setting. The recordings were carried out with 6 cameras directed toward the signers from different angles, and 6 signers were also recorded with one Kinect motion and depth sensing input device. All the material has been annotated in ELAN for signs, translations, grammar and prosody. To further facilitate research into FinSL prosody, computer-vision data describing the head movements and the aperture change…
Corpora, phraseology and dictionaries : How does corpus research intersect language teaching and learning?
2016
This article discusses the role of corpus data in language learning and teaching as well as the benefits of using authentic language data in learner dictionary writing. It has been argued that acquiring and teaching a target language and its phraseology would benefit from the usage of naturally occurring language. In the research on learner language phraseology to date, there is a bias towards analyses of collocations and ngrams. The present article attempts, however, to widen this scope to other dimensions of phraseology, namely semantic preference and semantic prosody, which are more abstract and perhaps more difficult to learn than concrete co-occurring lexical items. This article introd…
Korpuspohjaista oppijansanakirjaa tekemässä: esimerkkiinä ConLexis
2013
Sana-artikkeleissa esitetty tieto perustuu laajoihin korpusanaly…
