Renal and neurologic effects of cadmium, lead, mercury, and arsenic in children: evidence of early effects and multiple interactions at environmental…

2006

We read with great interest the article by de Burbure et al. (2006) on health effects in children who live near nonferrous smelters in France, the Czech Republic, and Poland. We were especially interested in the inverse relationship found between levels of urinary mercury and serum prolactin. We found a similar result in an Italian multicenter crosssectional survey with adult subjects (Alessio et al. 2002) using a different statistical approach based on regression analysis with mixed linear models. We found that serum prolactin decreased as a function of both urinary mercury and occupational exposure to inorganic mercury (Lucchini et al. 2003). In another study (Carta et al. 2003), our grou…

Towards a real-time 3D shape reconstruction using a structured light system

2005

This paper deals with 3D shape reconstruction using a structured light system (SLS) which projects a matrix of laser rays onto the scene to be analyzed. The intrinsic problem of such a system is the correspondence problem solving, which in this particular case amounts to matching up the imaged spots and the originating laser rays. In this paper, we propose a method for automatically obtaining configurations of the system (COS) (i.e. the relative positions of the camera, laser projector, and measuring scene) that permit to achieve a direct and unambiguous correspondence. After, we propose a splitting cell algorithm, which efficiently performs a real-time correspondence procedure. Experimenta…

Effects of environmental and spatial variables on lotic ostracod metacommunity structure in the Iberian Peninsula

2015

The heterogeneous distribution of aquatic species in lotic environments has been studied little in terms of metacommunity theory. Previous empirical tests have found significant spatial and environmental effects in pond and lake communities, but this has not yet been clearly established for stream networks. We conducted a multi-season survey of mountain streams in the Iberian Peninsula. We recorded GIS and in situ environmental data and collected biological samples to determine ostracods and macroinvertebrates and identified 41 ostracod species, the most common belonging to genera Herpetocypris , Sarscypridopsis , and Ilyocypris . A generalized linear model analysis showed that thermal rang…

An extended Benthic Quality Index for assessment of lake profundal macroinvertebrates: addition of indicator taxa by multivariate ordination and weig…

2014

AbstractThe chironomid Benthic Quality Index (BQI) is a widely used metric in assessments of lake status. The BQI is based on 7 indicator taxa, which like most profundal fauna, often occur sporadically in low densities. Hence, a major weakness of the index is that it cannot be calculated when indicator taxa are not captured. Thus, an extension of the BQI that incorporates more macroinvertebrate taxa is desirable. We used 2 statistical approaches (Detrended Correspondence Analysis and Weighted Averaging) to estimate new benthic quality indicator scores for profundal macroinvertebrate taxa and to construct modified BQIs called Profundal Invertebrate Community Metrics (PICMs). We calibrated th…

Saying-Doing Correspondence

2002

The study of the correspondence concerns the functional relationships between an individual’s verbal and non-verbal behavior. The analysis of the functional relations between saying and doing is interesting from a theoretical perspective (e.g.: how and when do they relate together? Learning to tell the truth etc.) and from an applied point of view: many clinical procedures, as verbal forms of psychotherapy, are based on the idea that changing people’s verbalizations about their behavior will lead to corresponding changes in the way they behave. Since say-do correspondence training has been employed in a variety of behaviors and types of procedures to examine the conditions upon which the ar…

Subfossil chironomid assemblages in deep, stratified European lakes: relationships with temperature, trophic state and oxygen

2010

Summary 1. The distributions of subfossil remains of chironomid larvae in 28 large, deep and stratified lakes in Europe were examined in surface sediments along a latitudinal transect ranging from northern Sweden to southern Italy. 2. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed that summer surface water and July air temperature, as well as total phosphorus (TP) concentrations, hypolimnetic oxygen availability and conductivity were statistically significant (P < 0.05) explanatory variables explaining between 11 and 14% of the variance in the chironomid data. 3. Owing to the spatial scale covered by our study, many environmental variables were covarying. Temperature, TP concentration and o…

Improving uptake of screening for colorectal cancer: a study on invitation strategies and different test kit use

2015

Objective The aim of this study was to compare the uptake of mail-delivered tests for colorectal cancer screening. We assessed the effect of an advance notification letter and a reminder letter, and analysed the proportion of inappropriately handled tests. Materials and methods Fifteen thousand randomly selected residents of Latvia aged 50–74 years were allocated to receive one of three different test systems: either a guaiac faecal occult blood test (gFOBT) or one of two laboratory-based immunochemical tests (FIT) – FOB Gold or OC-Sensor. Half of the target population received an advance notification letter; all nonresponders were sent a reminder letter. Results The uptake of screening was…

Distribution and habitat selection of wintering birds in urban environments

1998

Habitat selection of wintering land-birds was studied in 31 human settlements in Finland. A total of 26 wintering bird species representing 5155 individuals were observed. Between-year variation (CVB%) and short-term fluctuation within one winter (CVW%) in species richness (CVB=10% CVW=15%) were low, as were total numbers of birds (CVB=22% CVW=24%) and populations of the most common bird species (CVB=20–40% CVW=15–47%). The most abundant bird species (e.g., Passer domesticus, Parus major and Pica pica) occurred in most of the study sites. The total densities of omnivorous birds, sedentary birds and bird species that commonly use feeding tables were higher in a heavily urbanized areas than i…

How does the journal impact factor affect the CV of PhD students?

2014

In his editorial “Dear DORA”, Howy Jacobs commented on the recent San Francisco Declaration of Research Assessment (DORA) to address the misuse of the journal impact factor (IF) and discussed alternatives. DORA stipulates that the IF must not be used as a surrogate measure of the quality of individual research articles, or to assess an individual scientist's contributions in hiring, promotion and funding decisions. DORA and many other commentators, such as Howy Jacobs, therefore advocate the use of additional, alternative metrics and other measures to make a more fair and realistic judgment about the quality of a scientist's or …

COVID-19 … What are drugs and strategies now?

2020

From February 2019 the World faces the Covid19 pandemic. The data in our possession are still insufficient to effectively combat this pathology. The gold standard for diagnosis remains molecular testing, while clinical and instrumental and serological diagnostics are highly nonspecific leading to a slowdown in the battle against covid19.[3] Can Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) help us? The use of large databases to cross-reference data to stratify the diagnostic scores, to quickly differentiate a critical Covid-19 patient from a non-critical one is the challenge of the future. All to achieve better management of resources in the field and a more effective therapeutic a…
