This is my truth, tell me yours: some aspects of action research quality in the light of truth theories

2001

Abstract In this article the authors introduce some aspects of various truth theories in the context of action research. The traditional ways of determining quality are based on the correspondence theory of truth, which, in their view, conflicts with the basic assumptions of action research. The pragmatic theory of truth seems to be clearly represented in the world of action research. In their opinion, other theories of truth can be productively applied as well. In addition to the classical theories of truth – the correspondence theory, the coherence theory and the pragmatistic view on truth – they discuss the truth as ‘aletheia’ (a Heideggerian view on truth), as Habermasian consensus and …

Black holes in five-dimensional Palatinif(R)gravity and implications for the AdS/CFT correspondence

2014

We show that theories having second-order field equations in the context of higher-dimensional modified gravity are not restricted to the family of Lovelock Lagrangians, but can also be obtained if no a priori assumption on the relation between the metric and affine structures of space-time is made (the Palatini approach). We illustrate this fact by considering the case of Palatini $f(R)$ gravities in five dimensions. Our results provide an alternative avenue to explore new domains of the AdS/CFT correspondence without resorting to ad hoc quasitopological constructions.

Quantum spectral curve for arbitrary state/operator in AdS$_5$/CFT$_4$

2015

We give a derivation of quantum spectral curve (QSC) - a finite set of Riemann-Hilbert equations for exact spectrum of planar N=4 SYM theory proposed in our recent paper Phys.Rev.Lett. 112 (2014). We also generalize this construction to all local single trace operators of the theory, in contrast to the TBA-like approaches worked out only for a limited class of states. We reveal a rich algebraic and analytic structure of the QSC in terms of a so called Q-system -- a finite set of Baxter-like Q-functions. This new point of view on the finite size spectral problem is shown to be completely compatible, though in a far from trivial way, with already known exact equations (analytic Y-system/TBA, …

Classical resolution of black hole singularities in arbitrary dimension

2015

A metric-affine approach is employed to study higher-dimensional modified gravity theories involving different powers and contractions of the Ricci tensor. It is shown that the field equations are \emph{always} second-order, as opposed to the standard metric approach, where this is only achieved for Lagrangians of the Lovelock type. We point out that this property might have relevant implications for the AdS/CFT correspondence in black hole scenarios. We illustrate these aspects by considering the case of Born-Infeld gravity in $d$ dimensions, where we work out exact solutions for electrovacuum configurations. Our results put forward that black hole singularities in arbitrary dimensions can…

A holographic approach to low-energy weak interactions of hadrons

2011

We apply the double-trace formalism to incorporate nonleptonic weak interactions of hadrons into holographic models of the strong interactions. We focus our attention upon $\Delta S=1$ nonleptonic kaon decays. By working with a Yang-Mills--Chern-Simons 5-dimensional action, we explicitly show how, at low energies, one recovers the $\Delta S=1$ weak chiral Lagrangian for both the anomalous and nonanomalous sectors. We provide definite predictions for the low energy coefficients in terms of the AdS metric and argue that the double-trace formalism is a 5-dimensional avatar of the Weak Deformation Model introduced long ago by Ecker et al. As a significant phenomenological application, we reasse…

Neutral pion production with respect to centrality and reaction plane in Au+Au collisions atsNN=200GeV

2013

The PHENIX experiment has measured the production of pi(0)s in Au + Au collisions at root S-NN = 200 GeV. The new data offer a fourfold increase in recorded luminosity, providing higher precision and a larger reach in transverse momentum, p(T), to 20 GeV/c. The production ratio of eta/pi(0) is 0.46 +/- 0.01(stat) +/- 0.05(syst), constant with p(T) and collision centrality. The observed ratio is consistent with earlier measurements, as well as with the p + p and d + Au values. pi(0) are suppressed by a factor of 5, as in earlier findings. However, with the improved statistical precision a small but significant rise of the nuclear modification factor R-AA vs p(T), with a slope of 0.0106 +/-(0…

Rotating electrons in quantum dots: Classical limit

2007

We solve the problem of a few electrons in a two-dimensional harmonic confinement using a quantum mechanical exact diagonalization technique, on the one hand, and classical mechanics, on the other. The quantitative agreement between the results of these two calculations suggests that, at low filling factors, all the low energy excitations of a quantum Hall liquid are classical vibrations of localized electrons. The Coriolis force plays a dominant role in determining the classical vibration frequencies.

L’oggettività nelle teorie scientifiche rispetto alle pratiche del “discorso dominante” in Foucault

2022

The correspondence theory of truth can be arranged in such a way as to contain aspects of a “molecular” holism, in which background knowledge is linked but kept distinct from the content of the single proposition. Within this perspective, a proposition can still be a “representation” of a fact, always approximate and renegotiable, which nonetheless highlights the structure of the state of affairs in order to also illuminate the molecular group of states of affairs, of finite number, connected to the fact. Theories describe or represent real aspects of the world, but these aspects can always be analyzed in more depth, and they are never definitive, similar to the different levels of reality …

Research Letter: is neuroticism a risk factor for postpartum depression?

2012

Although the relationship between personality and depressive illness is complex (Shea, 2005), there is empirical evidence that some personality features such as neuroticism, harm avoidance, introversion, dependency, self-criticism or perfectionism are related to depressive illness risk (Gunderson et al. 1999). Moreover, personality traits, especially neuroticism, may explain the increased prevalence of depression among females (Goodwin & Gotlib, 2004). Few studies have explored neuroticism, extraversion and psychoticism as risk factors for depression after an event as stressful as childbirth. Pitt (1968) was the first author to report high scores on neuroticism and low scores on extraversio…

Vital dyes and virtual deaths.

2013

Dear Editor, In 2009 and 2012, Cell Death & Differentiation has published recommendations of the Nomenclature Committee on Cell Death (NCCD) for the Classification of cell death and Molecular definitions of cell death subroutines, respectively. Under the subtitle When is a cell ‘dead'?, and in an accompanying table entitled Molecular or morphological criteria to define dead cells, the 2009 paper featured a set of three criteria; the fulfillment of any single one is considered to indicate cell death.1 The first criterion in this list is Loss of plasma membrane integrity, and parameters commonly used to assess integrity of the plasma membrane were mentioned, namely exclusion from cells of vit…
