Chandra X-ray observations of the stellar group near the Herbig Be star MWC 297

2006

We present a Chandra ACIS-I X-ray observation of the region near the Herbig early-Be star MWC 297, where we detect a tight group of point X-ray sources. These are probably physically associated to MWC 297, because of their obvious clustering with respect to the more scattered field-source population. These data are compared to earlier ASCA data with much poorer spatial resolution, from which the detection of strong quiescent and flaring emission from MWC 297 itself was claimed. We argue that this star, contributing only 5% to the total X-ray emission of the group, was probably not the dominant contributor to the observed ASCA emission, while the X-ray brightest star in the group is a much b…

High-momentum tails as magnetic-structure probes for strongly correlatedSU(κ)fermionic mixtures in one-dimensional traps

2016

A universal ${k}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ decay of the large-momentum tails of the momentum distribution, fixed by Tan's contact coefficients, constitutes a direct signature of strong correlations in a short-range interacting quantum gas. Here we consider a repulsive multicomponent Fermi gas under harmonic confinement, as in the experiment of G. Pagano et al. [Nat. Phys. 10, 198 (2014)], realizing a gas with tunable $\text{SU}(\ensuremath{\kappa})$ symmetry. We exploit an exact solution at infinite repulsion to show a direct correspondence between the value of the Tan's contact for each of the $\ensuremath{\kappa}$ components of the gas and the Young tableaux for the ${S}_{N}$ permutation symmetr…

Large-scale inhomogeneities may improve the cosmic concordance of supernovae

2010

We reanalyze the supernovae data from the Union Compilation including the weak lensing effects caused by inhomogeneities. We compute the lensing probability distribution function for each background solution described by the parameters Omega_M, Omega_L and w in the presence of inhomogeneities, approximately modeled with a single-mass population of halos. We then perform a likelihood analysis in the space of FLRW-parameters and compare our results with the standard approach. We find that the inclusion of lensing can move the best-fit model significantly towards the cosmic concordance of the flat LCDM model, improving the agreement with the constraints coming from the cosmic microwave backgro…

SATELLITES AROUND MASSIVE GALAXIES SINCE z ∼ 2: CONFRONTING THE MILLENNIUM SIMULATION WITH OBSERVATIONS

2012

Minor merging has been postulated as the most likely evolutionary path to produce the increase in size and mass observed in the massive galaxies since z$\sim$2. In this Letter, we test directly this hypothesis comparing the population of satellites around massive galaxies in cosmological simulations versus the observations. We use state-of-the-art, publically available, Millennium I and II simulations and the associated semi-analytical galaxy catalogues to explore the time evolution of the fraction of massive galaxies that have satellites, the number of satellites per galaxy, the projected distance at which the satellite locate from the host galaxy, and the mass ratio between the host galax…

Gravitational Waves from the Merging of White Dwarfs

2003

Binary white dwarfs emit gravitational waves with frequencies of up to a few mHz. As a consequence of the loss of angular momentum both components gradually approach and the gravitational waves emitted by the system increase both in amplitude and frequency (it is said that they chirp). In fact, the chirp of the galactic white dwarf binary population is expected to be the dominant source of noise at low frequencies. A fraction of these binaries, those separated by a distance smaller than roughly three solar radii, will eventually merge in a time shorter than a Hubble time. It is expected that during the merging they will emit gravitational waves transporting extremely valuable information ab…

Circumstellar Disks in the Outer Galaxy: the Star-Forming Region NGC 1893

2008

It is still debated whether star formation process depends on environment. In particular it is yet unclear whether star formation in the outer Galaxy, where the environmental conditions are, theoretically, less conducive, occurs in the same way as in the inner Galaxy. We investigate the population of NGC1893, a young cluster ~3-4 Myr in the outer part of the Galaxy (galactic radius >11 Kpc), to explore the effects of environmental conditions on star forming regions. We present infrared observations acquired using the IRAC camera onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope and analyze the color-color diagrams to establish the membership of stars with excesses. We also merge this information with …

Accreting Pulsars: Mixing-up Accretion Phases in Transitional Systems

2018

In the last 20 years our understanding of the millisecond pulsar population changed dramatically. Thanks to the large effective area and good time resolution of the NASA X-ray observatory Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, we discovered that neutron stars in Low Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs) spins at frequencies between 200 and 750 Hz, and indirectly confirmed the recycling scenario, according to which neutron stars are spun up to millisecond periods during the LMXB-phase. In the meantime, the continuous discovery of rotation-powered millisecond pulsars in binary systems in the radio and gamma-ray band (mainly with the Fermi Large Area Telescope) allowed us to classify these sources into two "spide…

High redshift galaxies in the ALHAMBRA survey

2015

Context. Most observational results on the high redshift restframe UV-bright galaxies are based on samples pinpointed using the so called dropout technique or Ly-alpha selection. However, the availability of multifilter data allows now replacing the dropout selections by direct methods based on photometric redshifts. In this paper we present the methodology to select and study the population of high redshift galaxies in the ALHAMBRA survey data. Aims. Our aim is to develop a less biased methodology than the traditional dropout technique to study the high redshift galaxies in ALHAMBRA and other multifilter data. Thanks to the wide area ALHAMBRA covers, we especially aim at contributing in th…

A new method in investigations of bubble cluster shapes in two-phase flow

1991

Abstract In this paper a new probabilistic method is used to analyse the distribution of air bubbles in two-phase flow. So far, the method has been applied in astronomy and cosmology to investigate the distribution of galaxies. The basic idea is presented and the method applied to the photographed population of air bubbles in a liquid. The method allows the homogeneity of the flow to be evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively.

A Sample of Field Ellipticals

2003

Using well-defined selection criteria applied to the LEDA galaxy catalogue we have constructed a sample of elliptical galaxies that can be taken to lie in the field. Such criteria can easily be applied to theoretical simulations for direct comparison with observations. The variation of the number of `isolated' ellipticals with selection criteria is also investigated. A preliminary study of the environment of the field ellipticals shows that, in the mean, they are surrounded by a population of dwarf galaxies, out to projected radii of at least 500 kpc, with a radial density profile of $r^{-0.6\pm 0.2}$ and a luminosity function slope of $\alpha \sim -1.8$. The results are compared and contra…
