Numerical-Analytical Model for Nanotube-Reinforced Nanocomposites

2013

A novel numerical model able to predict the elastic properties of carbon nanotube/polymer composites containing a random distribution of CNTs has been developed. The new technique, which takes into account of the curvature that the nanotubes show when immersed in the polymer, is based on a numerical-analytical approach that has significant advances over micromechanical modeling and can be applied to several kinds of nanostructured composites. The nature of carbon nanotube/polymer bonding has arisen as key factor in the efficacy of the carbon nanotubes to actually provide any enhanced stiffness or strength to the composite. Here the effects of carbon nanotube interface interaction with the m…

Measuring the CO2 shadow price for wastewater treatment: A directional distance function approach

2015

Abstract The estimation of the value of carbon emissions has become a major research and policy topic since the establishment of the Kyoto Protocol. The shadow price of CO2 provides information about the marginal abatement cost of this pollutant. It is an essential element in guiding environmental policy issues, since the CO2 shadow price can be used when fixing carbon tax rates, in environmental cost-benefit analysis and in ascertaining an initial market price for a trading system. The water industry could play an important role in the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This paper estimates the shadow price of CO2 for a sample of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), using a param…

Prioritization of high-cost new drugs for HCV: making sustainability ethical

2016

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major health problem worldwide. Chronic HCV infection may in the long run cause cirrhosis, hepatic decompensation and hepatocellular carcinoma, with an ultimate disease burden of at least 350,000 deaths per year worldwide. The new generation of highly effective direct acting antivirals (DAA) to treat HCV infection brings major promises to infected patients in terms of exceedingly high rates of sustained virological response (SVR) but also of tolerability, allowing even the sickest patients to be treated. Even in the face of the excellent safety and efficacy and wide theoretical applicability of these regimens, their introduction is currently facing cos…

2009

The essay is made by two main aspects: history of European political Institutions, and federal political theory. For the first aspect, the author focuses on a special moment of Europe when the partners tried to have an agreement for a common military defence, the first step for the political union of Europe. So that European Commission asked the qualified opinion of the major political theorist, Carl J. Friedrich, a prominent expert of federalism and constitutionalism.

2012

About of the great catastrophes due to earthquakes, the historian’s task is to understand the processes and the reasons that lead to the urban reconstruction. The urban plan and architectural projects are an indispensable weapon for each renewal strategy, while the architecture and technology can even exorcise the fear of catastrophe and prevention the recurrence of certain effects through the innovations and measures imposed by the scientific development. Projects do not always succeed, the history of reconstruction has always been a history of élites, their contractual power and their ability to broaden the agreement. The choice of language olso plays a major role in reconstruction. In th…

La cattedrale di Alghero. Note e ipotesi sul primo progetto

2012

The Cathedral of Alghero presents numerous unresolved historiographical problems. This essay proposes a recostruction of the building history from the first half of the sixteenth century and until it underwent a radical break around 1560. Starting from the surviving traces in the apsidal area and from the analysis of the context, the aurìthor proposes a recostruction of the first project and outlinesa plausible partecipation of architectural masters of Valencia

Hospital and outpatient models for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: A systematic review of comparative studies for health outcomes, experienc…

2021

The number of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantations has risen in the past 20 years. The practice of outpatient Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation programs is increasing in an attempt to improve the quality of patient care and reduce the demand for hospital admission. A systematic review of 29 comparative studies between in-hospital and outpatient treatment of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation, with no restriction by outpatient regime was conducted. This study aims to analyse the current evidence on the effects of the outpatient model on patient-centred outcomes, comparing both in-hospital and outpatient models for autologous and allogeneic HSCT using the Triple Aim framework: …
