Brain aging and late-onset Alzheimer's disease: many open questions.

2012

ABSTRACTDespite decades of research in the field of Alzheimer's disease (AD), a real understanding of its molecular pathophysiology and treatments relevant to the day-to-day lives of patients remain out of reach. Research has, with good reason, focused on certain key pathways and potential mechanisms, but sometimes this has been at the expense of work on other theories, which may be slowing down progress in this field. Interesting theories at present include oxidative stress and caloric restriction. Work on the Aβ cascade should continue but with a shift in focus to its intracellular effects and an awareness that additional pathogenetic factors and processes must be involved – most importan…

The place of frailty and vulnerability in the surgical risk assessment: should we move from complexity to simplicity?

2018

Due to aging of the world population, older patients accessing health services are becoming continuously more frequent. This has increased the interest in assessing frailty and vulnerability in all specialties and general medicine. Although the term frailty has been recognized for over 30 years, there is not yet a universally recognized definition, and different care providers assess frailty and vulnerability with dissimilar tools, from very complex to very simple validated scales. Being treated with respect and dignity at the right time and place is the key message, as well as after undergoing a global evaluation both in urgency/emergency and in programmed surgery for all older surgical pa…

A review of programs to alleviate the burden of informal caregivers of dependent persons.

2010

The review of interventions currently available to alleviate the burden of informal caregivers of dependent persons has both social and political relevance considering the increasing number of elderly dependent persons. Respite services and programs for psycho-social intervention are the main methods of dealing with this burden. Study of the main research carried out to date on such interventions enables us to organize more efficient services, especially considering the enactment of the Law on Dependence in Spain in January 2007 and the need for other European and international governments to establish systems to meet the needs of the growing dependent population.

Comorbidities of Lung Disease in the Elderly

2017

Comorbidities are common in elderly individuals with chronic respiratory diseases. They can affect disease manifestations and severity and can even impact management. Comorbidities can affect the treatment of the lung disease, particularly because of the interaction with the respiratory drugs. Thus, a multidimensional approach with multidisciplinary intervention is suggested for elderly respiratory patients, switching from a disease-oriented scheme to a dysfunction-oriented approach. Unfortunately, older individuals are often excluded from clinical trials because of advanced age and comorbidities. This article reviews the role of comorbidities in the management of respiratory diseases in th…

Serum basal hormone concentrations and muscle mass in aging women: Effects of strength training and diet

2006

This study examined the effects of strength training and diet on serum basal hormone concentrations and muscle mass in aging women. Fifty-one women age 49 to 74 y were divided into two groups: strength training and nutritional counseling (n = 25), and strength training (n = 26). Both groups performed strength training twice a week for 21 wk. Nutritional counseling was given to attain sufficient energy and protein intake and recommended intake of fat and fiber. We found that the cross-sectional area of the quadriceps femoris increased by 9.5 ± 4.1% in the nutritional counseling group versus 6.8 ± 3.5% in the strength training only group after training (P < 0.052). Nutritional counseling e…

The Academic Background of Youth Soccer Coaches Modulates Their Behavior During Training

2020

This investigation aims to explore the relationship between the academic backgrounds of youth soccer coaches (U10 and U12 age groups) in Spain and the type of verbal behavior used during training sessions. The sample consisted of 70 coaches divided into two groups, depending on whether or not they had engaged with a university-level academic studies related to Physical Education and or Sport Sciences. A modified version of the “Coach Analysis and Intervention System” (CAIS), developed by Cushion et al. (2012), was used to collect data. A total of 32,886 verbal behaviors were noted and analyzed. Our results suggest that the coaches with university academic backgrounds frequently use more ver…

A Multi-layer Feed Forward Neural Network Approach for Diagnosing Diabetes

2018

Diabetes is one of the worlds major health problems according to the World Health Organization. Recent surveys indicate that there is an increase in the number of diabetic patients resulting in an increase in serious complications such as heart attacks and deaths. Early diagnosis of diabetes, particularly of type 2 diabetes, is critical since it is vital for patients to get insulin treatments. However, diagnoses could be difficult especially in areas with few medical doctors. It is, therefore, a need for practical methods for the public for early detection and prevention with minimal intervention from medical professionals. A promising method for automated diagnosis is the use of artificial…

How Efficient Are Emotional Intelligence Trainings: A Meta-Analysis

2017

This multilevel meta-analysis examines whether emotional intelligence (EI) can be enhanced through training and identifies training effects’ determinants. We identified 24 studies containing 28 samples aiming at increasing individual-level EI among healthy adults. The results revealed a significant moderate standardized mean change between pre- and post-measurement for the main effect of EI training, and a stable pre- to follow-up effect. Additionally, the type of EI model, dimensions of the four branch model, length, and type of publication turned out to be significant moderators. The results suggest that EI trainings should be considered effective interventions.

Attitudes of Undergraduate Nursing Students towards Patient Safety: A Quasi-Experimental Study

2021

Improving nursing students’ attitudes towards patient safety is a current and relevant topic. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention based on critical incident and root cause analysis (RCA) techniques regarding attitudes towards patient safety in nursing students. A quasi-experimental before and after study was developed between January 2018 and December 2019 in a sample of 100 nursing students at Universitat Jaume I (Spain). The intervention was developed in two phases. Phase I was at university, where students applied the RCA technique in a real case. Phase II took place during clinical practice. Students used critical incidents to identify a risk sit…
