Blood rheology during chemotherapy in patients with ovarian cancer.
1998
The use of platinum based chemotherapy in ovarian malignancy and other cancer types is known to be associated with deep vein thrombosis. In a prospective study of 47 patients with ovarian cancer of International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage Ib-IV, serial rheological parameters were determined (plasma viscosity, red blood cell aggregation under conditions of stasis and low shear) in addition to hemoglobin, hematocrit, leukocytes, platelets, and fibrinogen. At the same time the incidence of deep vein thrombosis was recorded before, during six cycles of first line cisplatinum/epirubicin/cyclophosphamide chemotherapy, and 2 months thereafter (two-months check-up). Only six pati…
Higher leukocyte subpopulation counts in healthy smoker industrial workers than in nonsmoker industrial workers: possible health consequences.
2012
Objectives: Cigarette smoke contains free radicals, which cause injury to endothelial cells and oxidize bioactive components in the blood. Neutrophils, a subpopulation of leukocytes, contain the enzyme myeloperoxidase that mediates production of hypochlorous acid during oxidative stress. In this study, we investigated whether smoker industrial workers had significantly higher neutrophil counts than nonsmoker industrial workers. Design and Methods: We collected blood samples from 183 apparently healthy male and 30 female industrial workers. We obtained blood cell counts, measured the concentration of plasma aminothio…
Influence of inflammatory and lipidic parameters on red blood cell distribution width in a healthy population
2015
Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a routine red blood cell count parameter which has been shown to be associated with inflammatory parameters. Recently, some authors proposed that RDW seems to be a marker of an adverse lipidic profile. In order to clarify whether RDW is related to inflammation, plasma lipids, or both, we determined anthropometric, hematimetric, inflammatory and lipidic parameters in 1111 healthy subjects. RDW correlated directly with age, body mass index (BMI), inflammatory parameters (plasma viscosity, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), fibrinogen, leukocyte and neutrophil count), and inversely with iron and hematimetric parameters (P 0.05). When subjects were…
Clinical usefulness of Glycated Albumin in the diagnosis of diabetes: Results from an Italian study
2018
Objectives: Glycated Albumin (GA) has been proposed as a screening marker for diabetes in Asian countries in the last years. Nevertheless, few studies have been conducted in Caucasian population. The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical usefulness of GA in diabetes diagnosis in Caucasian asymptomatic subjects considered at risk of diabetes based on medical history and Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG). Design and methods: Three hundred and thirty-four Caucasian subjects having one or more risk factor for diabetes, and/or FPG ranging from 5.6 mmol/L to 6.9 mmol/L with no symptoms for diabetes were enrolled in this study. Plasma GA was measured by an enzymatic method (quantILab Glycated A…
Treatment of acute rejection of cadaveric renal allografts with rabbit antithymocyte globulin.
1982
In a prospective randomized single-blind trial, we compared the effectiveness of rabbit antithymocyte globulin (RATG) in the treatment of acute renal graft rejection with the results of treatment by high oral doses of prednisone. Twenty recipients of cadaveric kidneys were included in each group. In the RATG group, the prednisone dose was not increased and a dose-by-rosette protocol was used to keep T cell levels between 50 and 150/mm3. In this group 15 of the 20 patients responded to the treatment. One of these patients lost her kidney afterward because of a technical failure. In five patients rejection was irreversible despite a subsequent course of high-dose prednisone orally. In the pre…
Risk factors for unwanted pregnancy and subsequent abortion among women aged 16 to 25 years in Latvia
2015
Objective To investigate the risk factors associated with unwanted pregnancy in 16- to 25-year-old women in Latvia. Methods Case-control study of 16- to 25-year-old, sexually active women who did not want to get pregnant: the cases were 144 women who underwent their fi rst abortion whereas 278 nulliparous women served as controls. Data concerning them were obtained by using a semi-structured anonymous questionnaire that included questions about education, sexual life habits, contraceptive practice and a multiple-choice test to assess knowledge about contraception. Results Women who underwent an abortion had had more lifetime sexual partners, had more often not used any contraception, and we…
Cultural and communicational traits of oral health care: results of a Finnish case study.
2006
This paper aims to describe the cultural and communicational traits of Finnish oral health care. First, employees' views and experiences regarding their organization and their position within it are investigated and, second, relations between different individual and organizational factors are analyzed. Finally, a conceptual framework of organizational coherence is constructed. The paper shows that data collection (n = 58, 84 percent response rate) was carried out in 2002 at a Finnish dental clinic by using a semi-structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed statistically by using, among other things, non-parametric tests and a structural equation model (LISREL) and qualitatively by usin…
Comparison of the effects of salmeterol and salbutamol on clinical activity and eosinophil cationic protein serum levels during the pollen season in …
1995
In atopic asthma there is strong evidence of eosinophils playing an active role in pathogenesis. Some investigations demonstrated that eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) serum levels increased in atopic patients with asthma during pollen season. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of short-term (1 week) beta 2-agonist treatment on lung function and eosinophil activity in asthmatic patients. We used an open, randomized, cross-over design to compare the effects of salbutamol (200 micrograms q.i.d.) and salmeterol (50 micrograms b.i.d.) on peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR), blood eosinophil count and serum levels of ECP as a measure of eosinophil activity in 20 mild atopic asthmatics.…
Validation of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey for Estimating Burnout in Dental Students.
2016
The aim of this study was to examine the validity and reliability of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) as a tool for assessing the prevalence and level of burnout in dental students in Spanish universities. The survey was adapted from English to Spanish. A sample of 533 dental students from 15 Spanish universities and a control group of 188 medical students self-administered the survey online, using the Google Drive service. The test-retest reliability or reproducibility showed an Intraclass Correlation Coefficient of 0.95. The internal consistency of the survey was 0.922. Testing the construct validity showed two components with an eigenvalue greater than 1.5, w…
Gamma/delta T lymphocytes are affected in the elderly
2002
gammadelta T lymphocytes are considered to represent a link between the inflammatory response and adaptive immunity. In the present paper we investigated whether these cells play any role in the remodeling of the immune system described in the elderly. We show that the absolute number of gammadelta T cells in peripheral blood of old and very old subjects is reduced. Moreover, gammadelta T cells from old people and centenarians show enhanced levels of the early activation marker CD69 both after culture in medium alone and in LPS-stimulated cells. Furthermore, they show a basal increased production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha as evaluated at the single cell level. Additionally, the r…
