‘Celebrating diverse motherhood’: physically disabled women’s counter-narratives to their stigmatised identity as mothers

This study examined how disabled women negotiated their stigmatised identity as mothers by presenting counter-narratives to the culturally dominant narrative of disabled motherhood. Eleven Finnish physically disabled mothers were interviewed. The data were analysed by focusing on these counter-narratives, their linguistic features and their functions in the interviews. The historical notion of Inter-Marium captured Poland’s centuriesold concept of integrating, in a form of confederation, the new states that appeared on the map between the Baltic and Black Seas after 1918. Reincarnated as the contemporary narrative of Tri-Marium, this notion is gaining new momentum and has been most visible in Poland, the largest state of the European Union’s Eastern semi-periphery. Il contributo descrive il progetto europeo OLTRE, acronimo di “Oltre l’orizzonte: Contro-narrazioni dai margini al centro”, è un progetto cofinanziato dalla Commissione europea, in particolare dal DG Affari Interni (Fondo per la Sicurezza Interna - Programma per l’Empowerment della Società Civile). OLTRE nasce con la finalità precipua di contribuire alla prevenzione dei fenomeni di radicalizzazione islamica sul territorio italiano, principalmente attraverso una campagna di comunicazione online. Per prevenire la radicalizzazione è necessario ridurre la vulnerabilità dei soggetti ritenuti “a rischio”, nel nostro caso specifico i giovani italiani con background migratorio di fede musulmana.

This paper deals with the analysis of the first results of Oltre project (ISF - DG Migration and Home Affairs, EU) funding for preventing the radicalization of the second-generation of migrants. This paper presents the results of a cyber-ethnographic study. The research analyzes the dynamics that make, calm and increase the radicalization narratives. This study is part of the Oltre project (ISF - DG Migration and Home Affairs, EU) which directly involved 42 Italian and second generation youths in the dissemination and moderation of an online communication campaign in order to prevent radicalized behaviors.
