Modeling21Ne NMR parameters for carbon nanosystems
2013
The potential of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique in probing the structure of porous systems including carbon nanostructures filled with inert gases is analysed theoretically using accurate calculations of neon ((21) Ne) nuclear magnetic shieldings. The CBS estimates of (21) Ne NMR parameters were performed for single atom, its dimer and neon interacting with acetylene, ethylene and 1,3-cyclopentadiene. Several levels of theory including restricted Hartree-Fock (RHF), Moller-Plesset perturbation theory to the second order (MP2), density functional theory (DFT) with van Voorhis and Scuseria's t-dependent gradient-corrected correlation functional (VSXC), coupled cluster with single …
Multi-scale theoretical investigation of molecular hydrogen adsorption over graphene: coronene as a case study
2014
The physisorption of molecular hydrogen onto coronene is studied using a multi-scale theoretical approach with Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations and Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. We consider two different kinds of model conformation for the approach of hydrogen towards the coronene i.e., systematic and random. For the systematic attack of hydrogen over coronene, the resulting potential energy profiles from DFT analysis are further found to resemble the Morse potential, and even the highly flexible Murrell–Sorbie (M–S) potential. The resulting M–S fitting also shows a zero-point energy correction of ∼16–17%. On the other hand, the potential energies from the random approach…
Calculation of excited-state properties using general coupled-cluster and configuration-interaction models.
2004
Using string-based algorithms excitation energies and analytic first derivatives for excited states have been implemented for general coupled-cluster (CC) models within CC linear-response (LR) theory which is equivalent to the equation-of-motion (EOM) CC approach for these quantities. Transition moments between the ground and excited states are also considered in the framework of linear-response theory. The presented procedures are applicable to both single-reference-type and multireference-type CC wave functions independently of the excitation manifold constituting the cluster operator and the space in which the effective Hamiltonian is diagonalized. The performance of different LR-CC/EOM-…
Large-scale calculations of excitation energies in coupled cluster theory: The singlet excited states of benzene
1996
Algorithms for calculating singlet excitation energies in the coupled cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) model are discussed and an implementation of an atomic-integral direct algorithm is presented. Each excitation energy is calculated at a cost comparable to that of the CCSD ground-state energy. Singlet excitation energies are calculated for benzene using up to 432 basis functions. Basis-set effects of the order of 0.2 eV are observed when the basis is increased from augmented polarized valence double-zeta (aug-cc-pVDZ) to augmented polarized valence triple-zeta (aug-cc-pVTZ) quality. The correlation problem is examined by performing calculations in the hierarchy of coupled cluster models…
Ab initio determination of the electron affinities of DNA and RNA nucleobases
2008
High-level quantum-chemical ab initio coupled-cluster and multiconfigurational perturbation methods have been used to compute the vertical and adiabatic electron affinities of the five canonical DNA and RNA nucleobases: uracil, thymine, cytosine, adenine, and guanine. The present results aim for the accurate determination of the intrinsic electron acceptor properties of the isolated nucleic acid bases as described by their electron affinities, establishing an overall set of theoretical reference values at a level not reported before and helping to rule out less reliable theoretical and experimental data and to calibrate theoretical strategies. Analytic evaluation of the dipole Hessian matrix in coupled-cluster theory
2013
The general theory required for the calculation of analytic third energy derivatives at the coupled-cluster level of theory is presented and connected to preceding special formulations for hyperpolarizabilities and polarizability gradients. Based on our theory, we have implemented a scheme for calculating the dipole Hessian matrix in a fully analytical manner within the coupled-cluster singles and doubles approximation. The dipole Hessian matrix is the second geometrical derivative of the dipole moment and thus a third derivative of the energy. It plays a crucial role in IR spectroscopy when taking into account anharmonic effects and is also essential for computing vibrational corrections t…
Kinetic and thermodynamic stability of the group 13 trihydrides.
2009
The kinetic and thermodynamic stabilities of the group 13 hydrides EH(3) (E = B, Al, Ga, In, Tl, E113) are investigated by relativistic density functional and wave function based theories. The unimolecular decomposition of EH(3) --EH + H(2) becomes energetically more favorable going down the Group 13 elements, with the H(2)-abstraction of InH(3), TlH(3), and (E113)H(3) (E113: element with nuclear charge 113) being exothermic. In accordance with the Hammond-Leffler postulate, the activation barrier for the dissociation process decreases accordingly going down the group 13 elements in the periodic table shifting to an early transition state, with activation energies ranging from 88.4 kcal/mol…
Nature of Bonding in Group 13 Dimetallenes: a Delicate Balance between Singlet Diradical Character and Closed Shell Interactions
2010
The nature of metal-metal bonding in group 13 dimetallenes REER (E = Al, Ga, In, Tl; R = H, Me, (t)Bu, Ph) was investigated by use of quantum chemical methods that include HF, second order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2), coupled cluster (CCSD(T)), complete active space with (CASPT2) and without (CAS) second order perturbation theory, and two density functionals, namely, B3LYP and M06-2X. The results show that the metal-metal interaction in group 13 dimetallenes stems almost exclusively from static and dynamic electron correlation effects: both dialuminenes and digallenes have an important singlet diradical component in their wave function, whereas the bonding in the heavier diinde…
Size-intensive decomposition of orbital energy denominators
2000
We introduce an alternative to Almlöf and Häser’s Laplace transform decomposition of orbital energy denominators used in obtaining reduced scaling algorithms in perturbation theory based methods. The new decomposition is based on the Cholesky decomposition of positive semidefinite matrices. We show that orbital denominators have a particular short and size-intensive Cholesky decomposition. The main advantage in using the Cholesky decomposition, besides the shorter expansion, is the systematic improvement of the results without the penalties encountered in the Laplace transform decomposition when changing the number of integration points in order to control the convergence. Applications will…
Modeling the Interaction of Carbon Monoxide with Flexible Graphene: From Coupled Cluster Calculations to Molecular-Dynamics Simulations
2018
The interaction of CO with graphene was studied at different theoretical levels. Quantum-mechanical calculations on finite graphene models with the use of coronene for coupled cluster calculations and circumcoronene for B97D calculations showed that there was no preferential site for adsorption and that the most important factor was the orientation of CO relative to graphene. The parallel orientation was preferred, with binding energies around 9 kJ mol-1 at the CCSD(T) and B97D levels, which was in good agreement with experimental findings. From a large number of CO-circumcoronene and CO-CO interactions, computed at different distances and randomly generated orientations, parameters were fi…
