Structure−Dynamics Coupling between Protein and External Matrix in Sucrose-Coated and in Trehalose-Coated MbCO:  An FTIR Study

We performed FTIR measurements on carboxy-myoglobin (MbCO) embedded in a sucrose−water matrix to study the degrees of freedom coupling between protein and external matrix in such a system. The work was undertaken on the light of recent results by Giuffrida et al. (J. Phys. Chem. B 2003, 107, 13211−13217), who evidenced, in trehalose-coated MbCO, a structured water−sugar environment of the protein, tightly coupled to the heme pocket structure. Such information was obtained through a suitable analysis of the temperature dependence of the CO stretching and of the water association bands in samples of different content of residual water. Dynamics of Strongly Coupled Modes between Surface Plasmon Polaritons and Photoactive Molecules: The Effect of the Stokes Shift

We have investigated the dynamics of strongly coupled modes of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and fluorescent molecules by analyzing their scattered emission polarization. While the scattered emission of SPPs is purely transverse magnetic (TM) polarized, the strong coupling with molecules induces transverse electric (TE) polarized emission via the partial molecular nature of the formed SPP–molecule polariton mode. We observe that the TM/TE ratio of the polariton emission follows the contribution of the molecular excited states in this hybrid mode. Mechanical Coupling Between Muscle-Tendon Units Reduces Peak Stresses

The presence of mechanical linkages between synergistic muscles and their common tendons may distribute forces among the involved structures. We review studies, using humans and other animals, examining muscle and tendon interactions and discuss the hypothesis that connections between muscle bellies and within tendons may serve as a mechanism to distribute forces and mitigate peak stresses. peerReviewed

An overview of a novel LC resonant device able to improve Power Quality in active and passive distribution networks

Nowadays power distribution systems are under a rapid evolution. The widespread penetration of distributed generation is bringing about new operating conflicts, which are adding to traditional power quality issues. The paper aims to analyse the performance of a new LC device able to improve power quality in electrical distribution systems, even in presence of distributed generation units. The different possible applications of the device are shown and the performances are proved by means of computer simulation. The first experimental results are also presented.

The excited state dynamics of pyrazine has attracted considerable attention in the last three decades. It has long been recognized that after UV excitation, the dynamics of the molecule is impacted by strong non-adiabatic effects due to the existence of a conical intersection between the B2u(ππ*) and B3u(nπ*) electronic states. Die vollstandige Reihe der Methyl-Substitutionsprodukte des Bis(η-benzol)chrom(I)+·-Radikalkations sowie ausgewahlte deuterierte Derivate desselben wurden in Losung und in glasartig erstarrtem Medium ESR-spektroskopisch untersucht. 1H-, 2D- und 53Cr-Hyperfeinparameter werden mitgeteilt und das Proton/Deuteron-Kopplungskonstantenverhaltnis wird diskutiert. Die Betrage von a(1HAren) und a(1HMethyl) variieren innerhalb enger Grenzen (3,454,15 bzw. 0,50,7 G), wobei a(1HAren) mit zunehmendem Methylierungsgrad zunimmt. The aim of this work is to show that at the population level, emerging properties may occur as a result of the coupling between the fast micro-dynamics and the slow macrodynamics. We studied a prey-predator system with different time scales in a heterogeneous environment. A fast time scale is associated to the migration process on spatial patches and a slow time scale is associated to the growth and the interactions between the species. Preys go on the spatial patches on which some resources are located and can be caught by the predators on them. The efficiency of the predators to catch preys is patch-dependent. Adenine and 2-aminopurine: Paradigms of modern theoretical photochemistry

Distinct photophysical behavior of nucleobase adenine and its constitutional isomer, 2-aminopurine, has been studied by using quantum chemical methods, in particular an accurate ab initio multiconfigurational second-order perturbation theory. After light irradiation, the efficient, ultrafast energy dissipation observed for nonfluorescent 9H-adenine is explained here by the nonradiative internal conversion process taking place along a barrierless reaction path from the initially populated 1 (ππ* L a ) excited state toward a low-lying conical intersection (CI) connected with the ground state.
