A case of lipogranulomatosis Farber: some clinical and ultrastructural aspects

1985

A 20-month-old girl showed typical clinical signs of Farber disease: hoarseness since birth, and periarticular subcutaneous painful nodules. Complete deficiency of acid ceramidase activity was found in cultured skin fibroblasts. An electron microscopic examination of a dermal nodule disclosed pathognomonic tubular inclusions in histiocytes. In epidermal cells zebra-body-like and needle-like lysosomal inclusions were found. Their ultrastructure is different from that of the intrahistiocytic lysosomal inclusions. Probably three clinical types of Farber disease may be distinguished according to the symptomatology and the course of the disease: a severe type, an intermediate type and a relative…

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in Palermo, Italy: an epidemiological study

1989

The incidence, prevalence and natural course of ALS were determined in the population of the province of Palermo, Italy. The average annual incidence calculated for the years 1973 through 1984, was 044./100.000 inhabitants. The prevalence rate on prevalence day December 31, 1984, was 1.67/100.000 population. The male/female ratio was 1.38. The mean age at onset was 54.3±11.02. The most common clinical form was the conventional one (61.4%); the bulbar form was more frequent among females than males. The mean duration of the disease was 33.7±35.8 months. The longest duration belongs to the pseudopolyneuritic form. The median survival was 36 months: 16 months for the bulbar, 36 months for the …

Evaluation of sexual function in females with exstrophy-epispadias-complex: a survey of the multicenter German CURE-Net

2016

Standardized knowledge about genital function in adult female individuals with exstrophy-epispadias complex (EEC) is scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate sexual function using the standardized Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), and to assess the influence of bladder and vaginal reconstruction and the presence of incontinence on FSFI results.Sixty-one females (aged ≥18 years) recruited by the German multicenter network for congenital uro-rectal malformations (CURE-Net) were asked to complete the FSFI and a self-designed semi-structured questionnaire assessing comprehensive medical data, gynecological, and psychosocial items. Twenty-one eligible females (34%) returned both quest…

An unusual case of sudden cardiac death during sexual intercourse

2018

The most common cause of sudden death during sexual intercourse in adults is heart disease, and it is usually the male, whereas the death of the woman is unusual. Generally, in these cases, death occurs as a result of cardiovascular disease. The authors report an unusual case of the sudden death of a young woman during sexual intercourse. The post-mortem investigations (autopsy, cardiac nuclear magnetic resonance and cardiac histology) demonstrated a previously undiagnosed arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy. The terminal cause of death was a malignant arrhythmia from arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy. This is the first report of a case in which sexual activity ca…

Time Course of Neuromuscular Alterations during a Prolonged Running Exercise

2004

PLACE, N., R. LEPERS, G. DELEY, and G. Y. MILLET. Time Course of Neuromuscular Alterations during a Prolonged Running Exercise. Med. Sci. Sports Exerc., Vol. 36, No. 8, pp. 1347–1356, 2004. Purpose: This study investigated the time course of contractile and neural alterations of knee extensor (KE) muscles during a long-duration running exercise. Methods: Nine well-trained triathletes and endurance runners sustained 55% of their maximal aerobic velocity (MAV) on a motorized treadmill for a period of 5 h. Maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), maximal voluntary activation level (%VA), and electrically evoked contractions (single and tetanic stimulations) of KE muscles were evaluated before, aft…

Reconstructive plastic surgery in the treatment of vulvar carcinomas

2005

Abstract Objective The results obtained using plastic surgery reconstruction in 207 patients with a primary or recurrent vulvar carcinoma were analyzed with regard to the surgical procedures applied, pre-treatment and post-operative findings, along with the long-term oncological disease course. Study design Standardized data concerning the surgical procedures applied and clinical factors were collected in a databank and statistically analyzed. Results The flaps employed were termed either ‘local' (cutaneous or fasciocutaneous; n =84) or ‘regional' (myocutaneous, n =123). For local flaps, the rate of secondary healing was 31%, dropping to 20% for regional flaps. Such healing disturbances oft…

Affective (re)orientations in online discussions on the threat of violence posed by migrants

2020

Online discussions are rife with fear-evoking images and meaning making that highlight a perceived threat to the security of European nations and their inhabitants posed by migrants’ violence in the wake of increased immigration. This paper examines the role of emotions in shaping anti-immigration views as a response to the threat of violence attached to migrants in online conversations. Using a dataset of Finnish online discussion threads from 2015 to 2017 that were prompted by extensive media attention paid to various cases of violent crime in which migrants were suspects, we particularly analyse the affective dynamics of interpellation processes wherein discussants are invited to adopt a…

Children evoke similar affective and instructional responses from their teachers and mothers

2015

In the present study, we examined the extent to which the responses of teachers and mothers toward a particular child are similar in respect to their instructional support and affect, and whether child characteristics predict these responses. The data of 373 Finnish child–teacher–mother triads (178 girls, 195 boys) were analysed. Teachers and mothers reported their instructional support and affective responses toward a child in the school/homework context in Grades 1, 2, 3, and 4. At the beginning of Grade 1, the children’s performance in reading and math was tested, and teachers evaluated the children’s externalizing and internalizing problem behaviour. The results demonstrated that mothe…
