The Role of Individual- and Macro-Level Social Determinants on Young Adolescents’ Psychosomatic Complaints

2011

This study examines the social determinants of psychosomatic complaints in young adolescents. Using data from the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study, psychosomatic complaints are studied in 98,773 adolescents (11- and 13-year-olds; 48% 11-year-olds, 52% 13-year-olds; 52% females, 48% males) from 34 European countries. Individual-level determinants, including family-, peer- and school-related factors as well as country-level determinants (Human Development Index [HDI]) are considered. In line with existing evidence, results revealed more psychosomatic complaints in young adolescents experiencing stress inducing familial-, peer- and school-related factors. Negative effects…

Subjective financial situation and financial capability of young adults in Finland

2018

A key developmental task in young adulthood is acquiring financial capability (Serido, Shim, & Tang, 2013), meaning competent financial management skills and the responsibilities that these involve. This study extends previous research on the theoretical model of the development of financial capability, including financial confidence (or financial self-efficacy) and financial behavior as factors contributing to subjective and financial well-being. It is part of the Finnish Educational Transitions Studies (FinEdu) longitudinal research project. Participants were 418 young adults aged 24–25 at Time 1 and 26–27 at Time 2. Path and mediation models and Structural Equation Modeling followin…

Mapping Digital Discourses of the Capital Region of Finland : Combining Onomastics, CADS, and GIS

2022

This article discusses the three Finnish city names Helsinki, Espoo, and Vantaa, and the urban discourses that surround them. The study reveals patterns of socio-spatial differentiation by examining what meanings people attach to these capital region cities and investigating how these meanings are expressed in online discourses. Using the methodological approach of corpus-assisted onomastics (CAO), this study incorporates onomastics, geographical information systems (GIS), and corpus linguistics. This interdisciplinary research also examines how corpus-assisted discourse studies (CADS) and GIS can be combined to reveal and visualize the contextual information and discursive patterns of topo…

Responsibility in home-school relations : Finnish parents' views

2014

Finnish parents' views on responsibility in the home–school relations were explored. Responsibility was here understood as responsibility over education and upbringing. The data consist of semi-structured interviews with 24 mothers and four fathers. In the home–school discourses, parents and teachers were often referred to as partners, and active parental involvement in school life was seen as a key to children's success. However, in some discourses teachers and parents were seen as polar opposites, e.g. teachers as experts — parents as laymen. Few references were made to children's responsibility.

Paternal mental health trajectory classes and early fathering experiences

2016

A father’s mental health is important for family well-being, but research is scarce on paternal symptoms during the transition to fatherhood. This study identified fathers’ latent mental health trajectory classes from the pre- to postnatal period and examined their associations with early fathering experiences. It further analysed, whether a family’s infertility history was associated with mental health trajectory classes and moderated their effects on fathering experiences. Finnish fathers ( N = 773) reported psychological distress (General Health Questionnaire; GHQ-36) and depressive symptoms (Beck Depression Inventory; BDI-13) in pregnancy (T1), and at 2 months (T2) and 12 months (T3) p…

“Who are the ladies?” : women’s representation and identity construction in the HBO series ‘Girls’

2015

This research paper examines the representations and identities constructed in the HBO television series 'Girls', which is considered one of the most groundbreaking television series of recent years due to its realistic and diverse female characters. In this paper, I analyse relevant examples from the first season of the series. The analysis is based on Critical Discourse Studies and various theories of gender and language. The main focus is not only on the linguistic construction of representations and identities, but also on multimodality. In addition to analysing how these linguistic and multimodal features affect representation, it is also considered how the series challenges today's no…

What drives future business leaders? How work values and gender shape young adults' entrepreneurial and leadership aspirations

2018

Highlights • Work values strongly predict later entrepreneurial aspirations and leadership aspirations. • The pattern of relationships was similar but not identical for both aspirations. • There is a gender gap in both entrepreneurial aspirations and leadership aspirations. • Gender differences in work values contribute to the gender gap in these aspirations. Abstract Who wants to become a business leader? We investigated whether young adults' work values (i.e., the importance placed on different job characteristics and rewards) predict their entrepreneurial aspirations (i.e., the intention to create a venture) and leadership aspirations (i.e., the intention to become a leader in a business…
