Involvement in sedentary activities and academic performance in adolescents: differences according to sociodemographic variables /Implicación en acti…

2016

AbstractThis study provides a first-time analysis of the differences in the time dedicated each day to different sedentary activities (SA) (productive, technology-based recreation and social activities) and their relation with the academic performance of Spanish adolescents according to sex, school year and socioeconomic status (SES). The sample was made up of 681 participants (50.2% girls), between 12 and 18 years old, who completed self-reported questionnaires. The likelihood of obtaining lower levels of academic success increase in adolescents who spend two or more hours on social SAs and have a lower SES. With boys, this increases further if they spend four or more hours on SAs involvin…

Rural places versus naturalized spaces. The logic of knowledge and acknowledgement in protected heritage areas

2013

New policies on nature heritage reorganize and redefine space by introducing new concepts, practices, managers and recipients. The imposition of a neoliberal conservation model generates tensions and resistance in local communities. This process involves appropriations, real and discursive, and reinventions on identity and territory. In this paper, we present the tensions derived from a statutory designation affecting a small town located in the region of Camp de Turia, Valencia (Spain). The town has swiftly gone from an economy based on traditional models for the exploitation of forest and agricultural resources, to a process of natural environment patrimonilization (The Sierra Calderona N…

Rural and Gastronomical Tourism in Baltic Countries

2018

The Baltic countries are apparently similar but actually very different not only concerning their language and culture but also their lifestyle. Regarding rural tourism, Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania have many common points: given the care for the remarkable natural environment and for preserving traditions and rural tourism practiced in each of the Baltic countries, filled with recreation and active desire for knowledge, traditional life, and beauty of nature in protected areas. Rural tourism also contributes to preserving the cultural heritage, and youth people are encouraged to know and keep the traditions alive. The rural tourist offer is complemented by the variety of gastronomy, whic…

The importance of physical education and health to be a core subject: Arguments and postures concerning the curricular modifications in Chile

2021

This study is focused on the declarations made by different Chilean institutions regarding the modifications affecting the subject Physical Education and Health (PEH), which were approved by the National Education Council. Purpose: The main aim was to analyse the speech generated and gather data around the curricular modifications in the 3rd and 4th course of the middle education in 2020, specifically the choice of leaving the subject PEH as an elective subject. Design: A qualitative, pragma-dialectic approach was used, focusing on the point of view and main arguments of the institutions on the topic. Results: 23 declarations were reviewed, pertaining 6 to health institutions, 12 to educati…

Value co-creation in health care : insights into the transformation from value creation to value co-creation through digitization

2016

This study explores the transformation of value creation into value co-creation and how the digitization of services plays a key role in this transformation within the health-care sector, which faces new challenges with the increasingly active role of the customer. Customers are becoming active participants in value co-creation and now have expectations based on their needs from the service. The objective of this study is to provide a more holistic view of the customer’s role and value cocreation within digital health-care services. This study emphasizes the necessity of the co-creation of value within the health-care sector and introduces a paradigm shift through the digitization of value …

Ecohydrology in Mediterranean areas: a numerical model to describe growing seasons out of phase with precipitations

2008

The probabilistic description of soil moisture dynamics is a relatively new topic in hydrology. The most common ecohydrological models start from a stochastic differential equation describing the soil water balance, where the unknown quantity, the soil moisture, depends both on spaces and time. Most of the solutions existing in literature are obtained in a probabilistic framework and under steady-state condition; even if this last condition allows the analytical handling of the problem, it has considerably simplified the same problem by subtracting generalities from it.

The steady-state hypothesis, appears perfectly applicable in arid and semiarid climatic areas like th…

An author keyword analysis for mapping Sport Sciences

2018

[EN] Scientific production has increased exponentially in recent years. It is necessary to find methodological strategies for understanding holistic or macro views of the major research trends developed in specific fields. Data mining is a useful technique to address this task. In particular, our study presents a global analysis of the information generated during last decades in the Sport Sciences Category (SSC) included in the Web of Science database. An analysis of the frequency of appearance and the dynamics of the Author Keywords (AKs) has been made for the last thirty years. Likewise, the network of co-occurrences established between words and the survival time of new words that have …

Evaluating the structure and use of hiking trails in recreational areas using a mixed GPS tracking and graph theory approach

2014

Abstract Recreational trails encourage numerous outdoor leisure activities in a variety of urban, rural, and natural environments. Understanding the way trails function is crucial for the designers and managers of recreational sites to balance the needs of visitors and site capacities. This paper presents a new approach to evaluate the structure and use of hiking trails by combining GPS tracking and analytical methods based on graph theory. The study is based upon empirical data (N = 482 GPS tracks) collected in the Lobau, which is part of the Danube Floodplains National Park in Austria. The physical structure of trails (structural network; undirected graph) and their usage (functional netw…
