Bounds for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue attained at an infinite family of Riemannian manifolds

1996

LetM be a compact Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary ∂M. We get bounds for the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet eigenvalue problem onM in terms of bounds of the sectional curvature ofM and the normal curvatures of ∂M. We discuss the equality, which is attained precisely on certain model spaces defined by J. H. Eschenburg. We also get analog results for Kahler manifolds. We show how the same technique gives comparison theorems for the quotient volume(P)/volume(M),M being a compact Riemannian or Kahler manifold andP being a compact real hypersurface ofM.

The Configuration of Space Through Architecture in the Thinking of Gadamer

2017

Although Gadamer stresses the importance of temporality, historicity and tradition, the aim of this contribution is to underline the uniqueness of architecture in Truth and Methods’ investigation relative to the essence of a work of art. The uniqueness of architecture for Gadamer lies not only in the fact that it gives space for the expression of all other kinds of artworks; a building has to be to understood as self-sufficient and as autarchic, but also as inscribed in the concrete historical life. A further aspect of the uniqueness of architecture originates in the fact that a building determines our way of life or our dwelling even in a political sense.

Molecular barcoding for central-eastern European Crioceris leaf-beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

2011

Abstract Among Crioceris leaf-beetles, the two most widespread species (Crioceris asparagi and C. duodecimpunctata) are serious invasive plant pests, while another two (C. quatuordecimpunctata and C. quinquepunctata) are rare species restricted to steppe-like habitats in Eurasia. The aim of the research was to check the genetic distinctiveness of these four species and develop barcodes for their molecular identification using the mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) gene and two nuclear markers: Elongation Factor 1-α (EF1-α) and Internal Transcribed Spacer 1 (ITS1). The identification of each species was possible and reliable with the use of COI and ITS1 markers. EF1-α was omitted in an…

Improving the management of potentially predictable hospital readmissions of the elderly and their quality of life through new icts

2013

3rd International Conference on the Elderly and New Technologies. III Jornadas Internacionales de Mayores y Nuevas Tecnologías. The ageing population is currently beginning to create economic repercussions, as ageing often implies an increase of health expenditure related to, specially, hospital admissions and/or unplanned readmissions and long term care services. The present paper deals with two strategies that could be implemented through the establishment and use of new technologies to avoid these increasing costs: 1) screening tools of health information systems aimed at identifying patients at risk of hospital readmissions or repeated use of health resources; and 2) new icts at elderly…

Providing QOS in 3G-WLAN environment with RSVP and DIFFSERV

2006

Here we present the end-to-end QoS mechanism in 3G-multiaccess network environment. As multi-access wireless WLAN and wired xDSL wideband multi-access technologies has emerge and become more popular a need for interoperability with different technologies and domains has become necessity. There is also a need for end-to-end QoS management. We show a scenario where the UE-GGSN connection is covered by RSVP and RAN network part uses partial over dimensioning and real-time controlled ATM queuing. DiffServ covers WLAN-Core QoS and radio interface between WLAN AP and WLAN UE uses IEEE's 802.11e. Our interest is to find out how well 3G traffic classes can survive in different traffic conditions in…

BythinellaMoquin-Tandon, 1856 (Gastropoda: Rissooidea: Bythinellidae) in Romania: species richness in a glacial refugium

2009

Mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) and ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS-1) sequences were analysed in 12 Romanian Bythinella populations. Phylogenetic relationships were inferred using maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian techniques. For COI, the Kimura two-parameter (K2P) distances and haplotype networks were computed. Two sympatric and four allopatric groups were distinguished. The K2P distances are similar to those for congeneric rissooids, so each of the six groups represents a species. Two are identified as Bythinella molcsanyi H. Wagner, 1941, and Bythinella dacica Grossu, 1946. The other four groups cannot be ascribed to any known Bythinella. The occur…

The First Forty Years of a Technosol

2009

Abstract Soil formation is often a very slow process that requires thousands and even millions of years. Human influence, occasionally on a par with the function of climate or geological forces, can accelerate the process and can be viewed as a distinct soil forming factor. This paper describes a soil, Haplic Regosol, in which anthrosolization dominates the soil forming process. Man-made soils, Technosols, were stabilized with techniques of ecological engineering (crib walls). We measured the main soil properties and focused on the movement of water (the reduction of soil weight is the key factor in stabilizing these calcschists). The newly deposited debris, sheltered by anthropic intervent…

The repeatability and reproducibility of calibrating signals generated by Hsu-Nielsen method

2005

During the measurements of the acoustic emission signals taken both in the laboratory and industrial conditions it is necessary to carry out calibration of the measurement paths used. One of the basic calibration methods is the one invented by Hsu-Nielsen, which consists in generating an acoustic signal during breaking a scriber placed in a special head put on an automatic pencil. The paper presents the measurement results of acoustic signals taken at various structural parameters of calibrating heads, which was done to determine their influence on the repeatability of the results obtained. Moreover, the measurements were taken for ten identical, in relation to their geometrical measurement…

ITS region of the rDNA of Pythium rhizosaccharum sp. nov. isolated from sugarcane roots: taxonomy and comparison with related species.

2003

Pythium rhizosaccharum (F-1244) was isolated from soil samples taken in the rhizosphere of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) in the north-eastern India. This species is characterized by its smooth-walled, spherical sporangia and rarely formed sexual structures. When formed, the antheridial branches wrap around the oogonia and soon disappear after fertilization. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of its rDNA is comprised of 904 bases. The taxonomical description of this new species and its comparison with related species are given here, together with the nucleotide sequences of the ITS1 and ITS2, and the 5.8S gene of its ribosomal nuclear DNA.

Broadband Internet Access via Multi-Hop Wireless Mesh Networks: Design, Protocol and Experiments

2010

Published version of an article from the journal: Wireless Personal Communications. The original publication is available at Spingerlink. http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11277-009-9907-9 While bandwidth for Internet access in urban areas is steadily increasing in recent years, many rural areas are still suffering from the effect of the digital divide. This paper presents a broadband Internet access paradigm developed in the context of the ADHOCSYS project, which was financed by the European Commission under the 6th Framework Program Information and Society Technologies, within the strategic objective of Broadband for All. Aiming at providing reliable Internet access in rural and mountainous regi…
