On the evidence of local court rolls, this paper studies the patters of violence in a valencian small town oriented to a great extent toward agrarian activities. It was especially a structural and daily violence, that usually it was not caused by habitual criminals but by common people and even by members of the ruling group. Abuse of force usually taked place from poweful to weak (from richs to poors, from masters to serviants, from husbands to wives, from christians to muslims), so that these forms of violence reaffirmed internal hierarchies that divided local community.

As in other medieval towns, local authorities of Castelló de la Plana controled legal prostitution. Town council supported public brothel in order to dissuade some passions that, otherwise, could degenerate into adultery and violence, and in the lastanalysis into disorders that threaten marriage as guarantee of material and social reproduction of community and its hierarchies. Civic engagement, corporate social responsibility and the fight against the extortion racket

The chapter focuses on the concept of civic engagement, paying primary attention to the social responsibilities of business owners who are consolidated in the moment in which they decide to cooperate with each other and to collaborate with the police force in favour of action against criminality of a mafia nature.
