Differences in wage determination in the Eurozone: A challenge to the resilience of the common currency

Abstract Different developments in wages and unit labor costs across countries can reduce the synchronization of business cycles within a currency area and therefore be a potential source of asymmetric shocks and/or asymmetric response to a common shock. In this paper, we use novel econometric methods to identify differences and similarities in wage determination across Eurozone countries. Results show that wages have different determinants across euro area countries, among which two relatively distinct groups can be identified. Does government spending boost economic growth in Europe?

The article aims to analyse the evolution of budgetary expenditures and their relationship with economic growth, especially in the EU countries and three non-EU countries - Switzerland, Norway and Iceland during 1991 - 2012. To test the link between government spending and economic growth the research used the United Nation Classification of the Functions of Government and three econometrical regression methods – ordinary least square, least squares dummy variable and the generalized method of moments. The paper seeks to interpret the European crisis following the critical-pragmatic approach that has been developed by the French sociologist Luc Boltanski. Kasvatus ja koulutus ovat ratkaisevia, jotta käytäntöjämme voisi muuttaa sosiaalisesti ja ekologisesti kestävämmiksi maapallon ekosysteemien ollessa kriisissä. Tässä artikkelissa hahmotellaan käytäntöteoreettista näkökulmaa kestävän elämänmuodon edistämiseksi kasvatuksen ja sivistyksen avulla. Ratkaisuksi ongelmaan on ehdotettu ekososiaalisen sivistyksen lisäämistä.
