Statistical methods for determining components non-liniarities, from thermoluminescent devices

2016

Thermoluminescent (TLD) dosimeters enjoy wide usage due to low cost and simplicity of use. They have however large errors at high doses in mixed-radiation fields, where non-linear effects occur. Algorithms based on the Akaike criterion [1] are presented for determining the maximal (physically meaningful) polynomial order with which the non-linearities are modeled. This depends on the number of points existing on a curve and on the points' errors.

Sets versus trial sequences, Hausdorff versus von Mises: “Pure” mathematics prevails in the foundations of probability around 1920

2010

Abstract The paper discusses the tension which occurred between the notions of set (with measure) and (trial-) sequence (or—to a certain degree—between nondenumerable and denumerable sets) when used in the foundations of probability theory around 1920. The main mathematical point was the logical need for measures in order to describe general nondiscrete distributions, which had been tentatively introduced before (1919) based on von Mises’s notion of the “Kollektiv.” In the background there was a tension between the standpoints of pure mathematics and “real world probability” (in the words of J.L. Doob) at the time. The discussion and publication in English translation (in Appendix ) of two …

Stochastic Multicriteria Acceptability Analysis (SMAA)

2010

Stochastic multicriteria acceptability analysis (SMAA) is a family of methods for aiding multicriteria group decision making in problems with uncertain, imprecise or partially missing information. These methods are based on exploring the weight space in order to describe the preferences that make each alternative the most preferred one, or that would give a certain rank for a specific alternative. The main results of the analysis are rank acceptability indices, central weight vectors and confidence factors for different alternatives. The rank acceptability indices describe the variety of different preferences resulting in a certain rank for an alternative, the central weight vectors represe…

The Mediating Role of Orthorexia in the Relationship between Physical Activity and Fear of COVID-19 among University Students in Poland

2021

Previous research showed that the COVID-19 pandemic has a significant impact on the wellbeing and lifestyle of populations worldwide, including eating and physical activity (PA) patterns. The present study aims to examine the mediating effect of orthorexia on the relationship between PA and fear of COVID-19. A sample of 473 university students from Poland of a mean age of 22 years (M = 22.04, SD = 2.90, 47% of women) participated in the cross-sectional online survey study. Continuous variables were measured using the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S) and the Test of Orthorexia Nervosa (TON-17), while categorical variables divided participants into the physically active and inactive group reg…

Invisalign treatment from the patient perspective: A Twitter content analyses

2021

Background: Understanding patient perspective is a key factor in improving treatment satisfaction. The aim of the present study is to qualitatively describe the content of Twitter posts related to the treatment with Invisalign in order to get a better understanding of patient experience. Material and Methods: Tweets were prospectively collected during a period of four weeks from public available posts on Twitter using Awario™ a bespoke social media monitoring tool. After applying the pertinent inclusion and exclusion criteria the selected posts were analysed by three investigators using thematic analysis. Specific themes and subthemes were developed. Results: A total of 1564 tweets were ana…

Boundary Issues in New Metropolitan Cities

2012

In the last decade, the focus of Italian politics aimed at the definition of metropolitan cities and independent associations of municipalities has become increasingly important. With regard to legislation, the issue has been considered since the 1990s, but despite several debates and legislative reforms there have been no real results. The only approach used was political-institutional, anchored in obsolete patterns and unable to deal with existing realities.Urban Planning and Urban Studies materialize the political choices in operational programs and control the evolution of urban and territorial transformations. These disciplines represent the starting point to reflect upon the process o…

Impact of systematic whole-body 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET/CT on the management of patients suspected of infective endocarditis: the prospective mult…

2021

AbstractBackgroundDiagnostic and patients’ management modifications induced by whole-body 18F-FDG-PET/CT had not been evaluated so far in prosthetic valve (PV) or native valve (NV) infective endocarditis (IE)-suspected patients.MethodsIn sum, 140 consecutive patients in 8 tertiary care hospitals underwent 18F-FDG-PET/CT. ESC-2015-modified Duke criteria and patients’ management plan were established jointly by 2 experts before 18F-FDG-PET/CT. The same experts reestablished Duke classification and patients’ management plan immediately after qualitative interpretation of 18F-FDG-PET/CT. A 6-month final Duke classification was established.ResultsAmong the 70 PV and 70 NV patients, 34 and 46 wer…

A Methodology for Solving the Multiple Criteria Macroeconomic Policy Problem

1983

In this paper we review the results of our research on using interactive multiple criteria optimization methods for solving macroeconomic policy problems in Finland. An existing econometric model describing the interrelationships between different variables and sectors of the economy is used. In addition, the current status of the implementation work is reported and some possibilities for future research are discussed.

Substitution of carcinogenic solvent dichloromethane for the extraction of volatile compounds in a fat-free model food system

2016

International audience; Dichloromethane is known as a very efficient solvent, but, as other halogenated solvents, is recognized as a hazardous product (CMR substance). The objective of the present work is to propose substitution solvent for the extraction of volatile compounds. The most important physico-chemical parameters in the choice of an appropriate extraction solvent of volatile compounds are reviewed. Various solvents are selected on this basis and on their hazard characteristics. The selected solvents, safer than dichloromethane, are compared using the extraction efficiency of volatile compounds from a model food product able to interact with volatile compounds. Volatile compounds …
