Wellness Centres on Costa Crociere Cruises: Body, Space, and Representation from an Anthropological and Linguistic perspective

2016

Many tourist services are connected to the care of the body. The tourist industry proposes different vacation opportunities where the body is the main focus of the experience. This kind of tourism implies specific services that show a particular universe of representation and particular languages. In this context, cruise tourism is an interesting case to analyze because a part of its services gives a central role to the body which, on-board, organizes and is organized within dedicated spaces and times. Cruise ships provide spaces for the wellness of the passengers such as swimming pools, gyms, spas or beauty centres. The analysis proposed in this work is based, on one hand, on a recent anth…

Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy in the treatment of pain and other symptoms in fibromyalgia : a randomized controlled study

2018

Low-energy pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy has been suggested as a promising therapy to increase microcirculation, which is of great concern in patients with fibromyalgia. This study evaluated the effectiveness of PEMF therapy on the treatment of fibromyalgia. A group of 108 women with fibromyalgia were allocated to a 12-week treatment period with an active Bio-Electro-Magnetic-Energy-Regulation (BEMER) device and a similar treatment period with an inactive device. Each patient received active and sham treatments in a random order. Pain and stiffness were assessed on a visual analog scale (VAS, scale 0-100mm), and functional status was assessed by the Fibromyalgia Impact Questio…

Oral microcirculation observed in vivo by videocapillaroscopy: a review

2009

Capillaroscopy is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that is fundamental in viewing peripheral circulation and in studying microangiopathies. The morphological study of microcirculat ion is of fundamental importance, mainly because the microvascular bed is directly involved in the etiopathogenesis of autoimmune disorders and acute and chronic inflammatory pathological conditions. The value of capillaroscopic investigation as a diagnostic means in cases of peripheral microcirculation disorders has been confirmed by numerous studies. Other studies used capillaroscopic investigations to evaluate microcirculation damage not as a complication of disease (diabetes), but as its initial stage, and…

Remote photoplethysmography for assessment of oral mucosa

2019

The present study is devoted to the assessment of oral mucosa perfusion using remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) technique. The alterations of mucosal perfusion were evoked by regional infiltration anesthesia containing adrenaline. Simple rPPG setup comprising white LED light source, video camera and narrowband optical filter (CWL=540nm), are able to detect subtle microcirculation changes in gingiva. Results demonstrate substantial decrease of rPPG waveform amplitude and subsequently perfusion index in affected gingiva region, following administration of anesthetics. The present study emphasizes clinical advantages of remote photoplethysmography and perfusion index mapping as a simple and c…

Comparison of coronary artery flow impairment in diabetic and ipertensive patients with stable microvascular angina

2014

OBJECTIVE: Stable microvascular angina (SMVA) describes patients with angina, findings compatible with myocardial ischemia and normal coronary angiograms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of diabetes on the coronary microcirculation troughs angiography indexes (TIMI Frame Count, Myocardial Blush Grade, Total Myocardial Blush Score) and a new index:TotalTIMI Frame Count (TTFC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study population included 310 patients with SMVA that we split into two populations: diabetic-non hypertensive (164 patients) and non-diabetichypertensive (146 patients). We calculated, on angiographic images of each patient, TIMI Frame Count (TFC), Myocardial Blush Grade (MBG…

Methods to investigate coronary microvascular function in clinical practice.

2012

A growing amount of data is increasingly showing the relevance of coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMVD) in several clinical contexts. This article reviews techniques and clinical investigations of the main noninvasive and invasive methods proposed to study coronary microcirculation and to identify CMVD in the presence of normal coronary arteries, also trying to provide indications for their application in clinical practice.

Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation

1985

During the past decade, diffuse intravascular coagulation (DIC) has been one of the most intensively studied subjects in hematology. DIC is a dynamic pathologic process caused by the entrance of foreign material into the circulation, or by exposure to abnormal surfaces. The intravascular coagulation is triggered by activation of the clotting cascade with resultant generation of excess thrombin within the vascular system that leads to further activation of the coagulation system, shortened survival of certain hemostatic elements, deposition of fibrin in the microcirculation, and activation of the fibrinolytic system. Decreased levels of hemostatic factors, secondary fibrinolysis, and exhaust…
