Teachers’ perceptions of autonomy in the tensions between a subject focus and a cross-curricular school profile: A case study of a Finnish upper seco…

2020

AbstractRecent research has indicated global trends of decreasing teacher autonomy and increasing teacher accountability. Standardised national tests have been identified as one of many factors constraining teacher autonomy. Another trend influencing teachers’ scope of action is the profiling and branding of schools that compete for students. This qualitative case study concerns the general upper secondary level in Finland, the only level of education in the country with a high-stakes final examination—the matriculation exam. The upper secondary level is generally regarded as Finland’s most subject-focused level of education. In contrast to this subject-focused tradition, the case school fo…

The Impact of Shadowing and the Severity of Fading on the First and Second Order Statistics of the Capacity of OSTBC MIMO Nakagami-Lognormal Channels

2011

Published version of an article in Wireless Personal Communications (2011), 1-16. Also available from the publisher at http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11277-011-0275-x This article presents a thorough statistical analysis of the capacity of orthogonal space-time block coded (OSTBC) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Nakagami- lognormal (NLN) channels. The NLN channel model allows to study the joint effects of fast fading and shadowing on the statistical properties of the channel capacity. We have derived exact analytical expressions for the probability density function (PDF), cumulative distribution function (CDF), level-crossing rate (LCR), and average duration of fades (ADF) of the capacity…

The evolutionary history of the Arabidopsis arenosa complex: diverse tetraploids mask the Western Carpathian center of species and genetic diversity.

2012

The Arabidopsis arenosa complex is closely related to the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Species and subspecies in the complex are mainly biennial, predominantly outcrossing, herbaceous, and with a distribution range covering most parts of latitudes and the eastern reaches of Europe. In this study we present the first comprehensive evolutionary history of the A. arenosa species complex, covering its natural range, by using chromosome counts, nuclear AFLP data, and a maternally inherited marker from the chloroplast genome [trnL intron (trnL) and trnL/F intergenic spacer (trnL/F-IGS) of tRNA(Leu) and tRNA(Phe), respectively]. We unravel the broad-scale cytogeographic and phylogeographic pa…

Understanding the reactivity of transition metal complexes involving multiple spin states

2003

International audience; In coordination chemistry, many reactions involve several electronic states, in particular states of different spin. This phenomenon of ‘Multiple-State Reactivity’ has been recognized for some time, both for gas-phase reactions of ‘bare’ metal ions, and for transition metal complexes in solution. Until recently, however, much of the discussion of these systems has remained qualitative, because standard computational methods do not allow the location of the critical points for these processes, the Minimum Energy Crossing Points (MECPs) between states of different spin. Increased computational resources and new algorithms now enable MECPs to be located for large, reali…

Parametric estimation of non-crossing quantile functions

2021

Quantile regression (QR) has gained popularity during the last decades, and is now considered a standard method by applied statisticians and practitioners in various fields. In this work, we applied QR to investigate climate change by analysing historical temperatures in the Arctic Circle. This approach proved very flexible and allowed to investigate the tails of the distribution, that correspond to extreme events. The presence of quantile crossing, however, prevented using the fitted model for prediction and extrapolation. In search of a possible solution, we first considered a different version of QR, in which the QR coefficients were described by parametric functions. This alleviated th…

Anomalous diffusion and nonlinear relaxation phenomena in stochastic models of interdisciplinary physics

2020

The study of nonlinear dynamical systems in the presence of both Gaussian and non-Gaussian noise sources is the topic of this research work. In particular, after shortly present new theoretical results for statistical characteristics in the framework of Markovian theory, we analyse four different physical systems in the presence of Levy noise source. (a) The residence time problem of a particle subject to a non-Gaussian noise source in arbitrary potential profile was analyzed and the exact analytical results for the statistical characteristics of the residence time for anomalous diffusion in the form of Levy flights in fully unstable potential profile was obtained. Noise enhanced stability …

An Exact Solution for the Level-Crossing Rate of Shadow Fading Processes Modelled by Using the Sum-of-Sinusoids Principle

2008

Published version of an article in the journal: Wireless Personal Communications. The original publication is available at Springerlink. http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11277-008-9512-3 The focus of this paper is on the higher order statistics of spatial simulation models for shadowing processes. Such processes are generally assumed to follow the lognormal distribution. The proposed spatial simulation model is derived from a non-realizable lognormal reference model with given correlation properties by using Rice's sum-of-sinusoids. Both exact and approximate expressions are presented for the level-crossing rate (LCR) and the average duration of fades (ADF) of the simulation model. It is pointed …

A Theoretical Study on the Low-Lying Excited States of 2,2′:5′,2′′-Terthiophene and 2,2′:5′,2′′:5′′,2′′′-Quaterthiophene

2005

The nature and properties of the low-lying singlet and triplet valence excited states of 2,2':5',2-terthiophene (terthiophene) and 2,2':5',2:5,2'-quictterthiophene (tetrdthiophene) are discussed on the basis of high-level ab initio. computations. The spectrascopic features determined experimentally for short α-oligothiophenes are rationalised on theoretical grounds. Special attention is devoted to the nonradiative decay process through intersystem crossing (ISC) from the singlet to the triplet manifold, which is known to be relatively less efficient in tetrathiophene. Along the geometry relaxation of the S 1 state of terthiophene, the S' 1 and T 2 states become degenerate, which leads. to a…
