Origin of the natural variation in the storage of dietary carotenoids in freshwater amphipod crustaceans

2020

Carotenoids are diverse lipophilic natural pigments which are stored in variable amounts by animals. Given the multiple biological functions of carotenoids, such variation may have strong implications in evolutionary biology. Crustaceans such as Gammarus amphipods store large amounts of these pigments and inter-population variation occurs. While differences in parasite selective pressure have been proposed to explain this variation, the contribution of other factors such as genetic differences in the gammarid ability to assimilate and/or store pigments, and the environmental availability of carotenoids cannot be dismissed. This study investigates the relative contributions of the gammarid g…

Isolation and characterization of microsatellite markers in the portunid crab Liocarcinus depurator using FIASCO and 454 next-generation sequencing

2012

The portunid crab Liocarcinus depurator is the dominant decapod crustacean present on mud bottoms of the continental shelf of the Mediterranean Sea. In order to better describe its genetic structure, a total of 11 microsatellites were isolated and tested in 28 L. depurator individuals from the Mediterranean locality of Tarragona. Initially, microsatellite isolation was carried out using the FIASCO methodology, but only 2 useful primer pairs could be designed. Given the low yield obtained, an alternative method based on 454 next-generation sequencing was assayed, which provided excellent results and from which another 9 primer pairs gave positive genotyping. All loci tested were polymorphic,…

Impacts of reduced Lepidurus arcticus availability on brown trout life history traits in a mountain reservoir

2020

Lepidurus arcticus (the Arctic tadpole shrimp) is a vulnerable keystone species in Arctic and alpine water bodies where its occurrence and population size may influence the viability and life history traits of resident salmonids. Using data from a Norwegian mountain hydropower reservoir, Aursjoen, we illustrate how reduced availability of L. arcticus as prey resulted in the reduced condition, growth and delayed maturation of resident brown trout (Salmo trutta). We further link changes in the relative abundance of L. arcticus as prey to changing reservoir conditions, e.g. water level changes in the spring period, thereby establishing an indirect link between reservoir operation regimes and b…
