Dendrochemical assessment of mercury releases from a pond and dredged-sediment landfill impacted by a chlor-alkali plant.

2016

International audience; Although current Hg emissions from industrial activities may be accurately monitored, evidence of past releases to the atmosphere must rely on one or more environmental proxies. We used Hg concentrations in tree cores collected from poplars and willows to investigate the historical changes of Hg emissions from a dredged sediment landfill and compared them to a nearby control location. Our results demonstrated the potential value of using dendrochemistry to record historical Hg emissions from past industrial activities.

Two Reflected Gray Code-Based Orders on Some Restricted Growth Sequences

2014

We consider two order relations: that induced by the m-ary reflected Gray code and a suffix partitioned variation of it. We show that both of them when applied to some sets of restricted growth sequences still yield Gray codes. These sets of sequences are: subexcedant and ascent sequences, restricted growth functions and staircase words. In particular, we give the first suffix partitioned Gray codes for restricted growth f unctions and ascent sequences; these latter sequences code various combinatorial classes as interval orders, upper triangular matrices without zero rows and zero columns whose non-negative integer entries sum up to n, and certain pattern-avoiding permutations. For each Gr…

Transgastric imaging-The key to successful periprocedural TEE guiding for edge-to-edge repair of the tricuspid valve.

2021

Intraprocedural transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) guidance plays an essential role in transcatheter repair therapy of the tricuspid valve (TV). So far, several different imaging concepts are in use. We propose an imaging protocol that fully addresses the morphological complexity of the TV and further offers efficacious workarounds for the frequently occurring restrictions of TV imaging in edge-to-edge repair of the TV. As a tertiary referral center with a large experience of more than 250 cases of transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) of the TV performed at the Heart Valve Center in Mainz/Germany, we have constantly adapted our peri-interventional echocardiographic approach to accom…

Advances in the enumeration of foldable self-avoiding walks

2020

<font color="#336633"&gtSelf-avoiding walks (SAWs) have been studied for a long time due to their intrinsic importance and the many application fields in which they operate. A new subset of SAWs, called foldable SAWs, has recently been discovered when investigating two different SAW manipulations embedded within existing protein structure prediction (PSP) software. Since then, several attempts have been made to find out more about these walks, including counting them. However, calculating the number of foldable SAWs appeared as a tough work, and current supercomputers fail to count foldable SAWs of length exceeding ≈ 30 steps. In this article, we present new progress in this enumeration, bo…

JaxoDraw: A graphical user interface for drawing Feynman diagrams

2003

JaxoDraw is a Feynman graph plotting tool written in Java. It has a complete graphical user interface that allows all actions to be carried out via mouse click-and-drag operations in a WYSIWYG fashion. Graphs may be exported to postscript/EPS format and can be saved in XML files to be used in later sessions. One of the main features of JaxoDraw is the possibility to produce LaTeX code that may be used to generate graphics output, thus combining the powers of TeX/LaTeX with those of a modern day drawing program. With JaxoDraw it becomes possible to draw even complicated Feynman diagrams with just a few mouse clicks, without the knowledge of any programming language.

Humboldt Meets Schumpeter? Interpreting the ‘Entrepreneurial Turn’ in European Higher Education

2016

Universities are increasingly pressured to respond to external imperatives and demands, while, at the same time, they are expected to enhance both their efficiency and accountability. This is leading to the local adoption of key, structural and cultural features associated with the model or global script of the entrepreneurial university. This chapter undertakes a critical analysis of the premises associated with the latter model, and provides new insights on the sustainability of the “entrepreneurial turn in higher education” against the backdrop of the challenges facing European universities.

The Many Guises of Nordic Higher Education Mergers

2016

In this final chapter, the volume’s editors reflect upon the empirical and theoretical contributions from the book. The chapter is structured according to a number of ‘dimensions’ which have appeared in the previous chapters. It is concluded that the historical contexts and path dependencies play crucial roles also in the case of mergers. Furthermore, the importance of key actors is highlighted, not least the role played by formal top leaders, but also informal brokers and change agents at the institutional level. In terms of future research, two lines of inquiry are identified. The first is to delve deeper into process-related issues, which is still an unexplored aspect of mergers, and the…

United We Stand: The Recognition of Joint Degrees

2003

Joint degrees are awarded on the basis of completion of a study program established and provided jointly by two or more higher education institutions, normally located in different countries. They therefore normally require students to take a part of their degree abroad and are a potentially important instrument for increasing academic mobility and internationalizing higher education in Europe, which are among the key goals of the Bologna Process. A recent study by one of the authors, Andrejs Rauhvargers, undertaken for the European University Association (EUA), considers this increasingly important element of higher education that, however, is hampered by inadequate recognition across bor…

University?Industry Relations in France

1993

International audience; This paper summarises the key developments in university-industry relations in France in recent years. The overall trend is seen to be one in which there has been a movement away from dependence on the state and towards a diversity of the types of co-operation between firms and institutions of higher education.
