Effect of hydroxyapatite concentration and size on morpho-mechanical properties of PLA-based randomly oriented and aligned electrospun nanofibrous ma…

2019

The growing demand for nanofibrous biocomposites able to provide peculiar properties requires systematic investigations of processing-structure-property relationships. Understanding the morpho-mechanical properties of an electrospun scaffold as a function of the filler features and mat microstructure can aid in designing these systems. In this work, the reinforcing effect of micrometric and nanometric hydroxyapatite particles in polylactic acid-based electrospun scaffold presenting random and aligned fibers orientation, was evaluated. The particles incorporation was investigated trough Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflectance. The morphology of the nanofibers …

A simple interpretation of the effect of the polymer type on the properties of PMBs for road paving applications

2018

Abstract The paper presents the results of the rheological characterisation of polymer-modified bitumen for paving applications. In order to find a simple interpretation of the influence of polymer type on the blends produced, in this study high density and low density polyethylene (PE) with different chemical properties were used, as well as ethylene-vinyl acetate. The chemical characteristics of the base bitumen and the polymers used were determined by means of SARA analysis and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, FTIR, respectively. The morphology of the produced blends was investigated by means of fluorescent light optic microscopy, while the mechanical properties were investigated…

Comparison of cellulose nanocrystals obtained by sulfuric acid hydrolysis and ammonium persulfate, to be used as coating on flexible food-packaging m…

2016

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), extracted from trees, plants, or similar cellulose-containing materials, can be used in combination with other materials to improve their performance or introduce new applications. The main purpose of this study was to compare and understand the potentialities, as coatings for Poly(ethylene terephthalate) films, of CNCs obtained starting from the same cotton linters by two different processes: sulfuric acid hydrolysis and a less common treatment with ammonium persulfate (APS), able to provide also a cellulose oxidation. The results showed that CNCs produced through the APS treatment showed higher charge densities, due to the carboxylic groups formed during the…

Capillary Imbibition, Crystallization, and Local Dynamics of Hyperbranched Poly(ethylene oxide) Confined to Nanoporous Alumina

2017

The crystallization and dynamics of hyperbranched poly(ethylene oxide) (hbPEO), obtained from the direct random copolymerization of EO and glycidol (PEO-co-PG), are studied both in bulk and within nanoporous alumina (AAO). Copolymerization decreases the degree of crystallinity and lowers the crystallization and melting temperatures as compared to linear PEO. The dynamics of capillary imbibition within AAO followed the t1/2 prediction but is slower than predicted by the classical Lucas–Washburn equation. The most prominent effect of confinement is the change in nucleation mechanism—from heterogeneous nucleation in bulk to homogeneous nucleation inside AAO. The homogeneous nucleation temperat…

Dynamic mechanical properties of semi-interpenetrating networks based on poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride): 3. Poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether)…

1994

Semi-IPN's based on linear poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether) (PPE) and diamine crosslinked poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (PScoMA) copolymers containing small amounts of maleic anhydride (PSA=4.7wt.-% MA, PSB=5.8 wt-% MA) are studied with respect to the influence of cross-linking on the phase behavior. Temperature-dependent dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and DSC show that the semi-IPN's prepared from concentrated solution show weak crystallinity of the PPE phase. After heating above the PPE melting transition the semi-IPN's remain amorphous and the relaxation in the glass transition region as well as the terminal relaxation of the free PPE chains in the network is studied as a fu…

Effect of the additive level and of the processing temperature on the re-building of post consumer pipes from polyethylene blends

2007

Abstract One of the main shortcomings of the mechanical recycling is that the properties of the secondary materials are generally sensibly inferior with respect to the virgin ones. This feature implies, for sure, that they cannot be used for the same technological application but also other uses of the secondary material are impossible. The aim of this work is to study the re-building of recycled post-consumer pipes, made of a blend of different polyethylenes, by re-processing in the presence of a nitroxyl compound as radical generator. The processing temperature and the additive concentration have been varied in order to study the effect of these parameters on the final properties. The mec…

Linking structure and nanomechanical properties via instrumented nanoindentations on well-defined and fine-tuned morphology poly(ethylene)

2009

Several poly(ethylene) samples with a broad range of morphologies were studied in this work using nanoindentations. The samples had degrees of crystallinity ranging from 30 to 100% while their Young's modulus ranged from few tens of MPa up to several GPa. Experimental conditions for the correct evaluation of Young's modulus were at first identified, choosing a suitable loading rate in order to minimize viscoelastic effects on the unloading. The force curves, i.e., plots of applied load vs. penetration depth, were then analyzed following two common procedures available in the literature. None of these procedures leads to satisfying results when compared to other experimental techniques. Howe…

Direct synthesis of fibrous high molecular weight polyethylene using vanadium catalysts supported on an SiO2ionic liquid system

2015

Polyethylene of fibrous morphology was obtained using Cp2VCl2 and VCl2(salenCl2) catalysts activated by AlEt2Cl and AlEtCl2 and heterogenized on a supported ionic liquid system prepared with SiO2 and 1-(3-triethoxysilyl)propyl-3-methylimidazolium chloroaluminate. The fibre length ranges from 15 to 60 µm, depending on the reaction conditions. The polyethylene is characterized by a high molecular weight ((1.1–2.4) × 106 g mol−1) and a narrow molecular weight distribution (1.4–2.5). It is a linear polymer, properly without branching. The DSC method reveals characteristic changes in melting temperature and crystallinity degree between the first and second scan heating cycles (141 °C and 136 °C,…

Copolymers of ethylene with monoalkenyl- and monoalkenyl(siloxy)silsesquioxane (POSS) comonomers – Synthesis and characterization

2017

Abstract The hybrid ethylene/POSS copolymers were obtained using the rac -Et(Ind) 2 ZrCl 2 catalyst activated by MAO. A series of monoalkenyl- and monoalkenyl(siloxy)silsesquioxanes derivatives with different structures of reactive alkenyl substituent and types of non-reactive groups attached to the T 8 POSS cage was used as comonomers. The kind and concentration of the POSS comonomer in the reaction feed as well as extended reaction time were found to strongly influence the catalyst efficiency and incorporation of POSS units into polymer chains. The comonomer reactivity was significantly dependent on the length of the alkenyl reactive substituent in the POSS molecule and it was highest for…

Thermal and dynamic mechanical properties of beeswax-halloysite nanocomposites for consolidating waterlogged archaeological woods

2015

Abstract Thermal and mechanical properties were determined for the halloysite nanotubes (HNT)/beeswax composites at various compositions. The beeswax degradation temperatures and time course, provided by thermogravimetry (TG), evidenced the improvement of the thermal properties operated by HNT. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) allowed us to determine the enthalpy of melting as well as the time course of the melting process for beeswax. A slight loss of beeswax crystallinity was observed upon HNT addition. The dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA) provided the loss and the storage modulus for the nanocomposites upon heating and it was shown that the nanoclays create an inorganic framewo…
