Roadmap on STIRAP applications

2019

STIRAP (stimulated Raman adiabatic passage) is a powerful laser-based method, usually involving two photons, for efficient and selective transfer of populations between quantum states. A particularly interesting feature is the fact that the coupling between the initial and the final quantum states is via an intermediate state, even though the lifetime of the latter can be much shorter than the interaction time with the laser radiation. Nevertheless, spontaneous emission from the intermediate state is prevented by quantum interference. Maintaining the coherence between the initial and final state throughout the transfer process is crucial. STIRAP was initially developed with applications in …

Nanoparticle One-Dimensional Photonic-Crystal Dye Laser

2009

The stimulated emission from an organic dye adsorbed within the void network of a NP 1D (photonic crystals) PC, was studied. The nanoparticle one-dimensional photonic crystals (NP 1DPCs) were assembled by polyelectrolyte-assisted layer-by-layer deposition with subsequent calcination of the films to remove the polymer components. Each layer was prepared by spin-coating a block-copolymer-templated titania- or silica-based sol solution followed by a calcination step. To maximize the photonic-crystal effect, PCs consisting of eleven bilayers, compared to the four-bilayer NP 1D PCs, were fabricated with good structural and optical quality over 2 cm ×2 cm areas. The effective refractive index of …

Submicrometer in-plane integrated surface plasmon cavities.

2007

International audience; The optical properties of in-plane integrated surface plasmon polariton (SPP) cavities comprised of a thin film area sandwiched between two one-dimensional Bragg SPP mirrors are investigated numerically and experimentally. We discuss the resonance condition of these cavities, and we analyze in details the physical origin of the dispersion of this resonance. On the basis of numerical results, we show that in-plane SPP cavities can be used to achieve local SPP field enhancement and antireflecting SPP layers. The numerical results are compared to near-field optical images recorded by operating a photon scanning tunneling microscope. From the near-field images recorded o…

The experimental setup of the Interaction in Crystals for Emission of RADiation collaboration at Mainzer Mikrotron: Design, commissioning, and tests

2015

Silicon/germanium flat/bent crystals are thin devices able to efficiently deflect charged particle GeV-energy beams up to a few hundreds of μrad; moreover, high intensity photons can be efficiently produced in the so-called Multi-Volume Reflection (MVR) and Multiple Volume Reflections in One Crystal (MVROC) conditions. In the last years, the research interest in this field has moved to the dynamic studies of light negative leptons in the low energy range: the possibility to deflect negative particles and to produce high intensity γ sources via the coherent interactions with crystals in the sub-GeV energy range has been proved by the ICE-RAD (Interaction in Crystals for Emission of RADiation…

All-optical tuning of a photonic band-gap via near-infrared laser pulses

2008

We present an all-optical tuning at IR wavelength in a novel photonic crystal consisting of a polystyrene opal with gold nanoparticles. The band-gap can be finely tuned with permanent shifts as large as 30 nm irradiating the sample with ps pulses at a low rep-rate in the visible.

Effects of dissipation on an adiabatic quantum search algorithm

2010

According to recent studies (Amin et al 2008 Phys. Rev. Lett. 100 060503), the effect of a thermal bath may improve the performance of a quantum adiabatic search algorithm. In this paper, we compare the effects of such a thermal environment on the algorithm performance with those of a structured environment similar to the one encountered in systems coupled to an electromagnetic field that exists within a photonic crystal. Whereas for all the parameter regimes explored here, the algorithm performance is worsened by contact with a thermal environment, the picture appears to be different when one considers a structured environment. In this case we show that by tuning the environment parameters…

Resonant Interaction Energy between Two Identical Atoms in a Photonic Crystal

2014

We consider the resonant interaction energy between two identical atoms, one in an excited state and the other in the ground state, placed inside a photonic crystal. We consider two different models of a photonic crystal: a one-dimensional crystal and an isotropic three-dimensional crystal. The two atoms, having the same orientation of their transition dipole moment, are supposed prepared in their entangled symmetrical state and interacting with the quantum electromagnetic field in the multipolar coupling scheme. We consider both the case of an atomic transition frequency outside the photonic band gap and the case of a transition frequency inside the gap. When the transition frequency is ou…

2018

We study losses of ice crystals in a persistent, soot-rich contra i l in the wake behind a medium-sized aircraft at cru i se. Constrain i n g a model covering ice nucleation, growth, and subl i m a t i o n phases with a n aircraft data set, we track the subl i m a t i o n history over two minutes of cont r a i l age and rela t e ice crystal numbers to the number of soot particles emitted by th e aircraft engines.

HOLIMO II: a digital holographic instrument for ground-based in situ observations of microphysical properties of mixed-phase clouds

2013

Measurements of the microphysical properties of mixed-phase clouds with high spatial resolution are important to understand the processes inside these clouds. This work describes the design and characterization of the newly developed ground-based field instrument HOLIMO II (HOLographic Imager for Microscopic Objects II). HOLIMO II uses digital in-line holography to in situ image cloud particles in a well-defined sample volume. By an automated algorithm, two-dimensional images of single cloud particles between 6 and 250 μm in diameter are obtained and the size spectrum, the concentration and water content of clouds are calculated. By testing the sizing algorithm with monosized beads a system…
