Abstract Heterogeneous ice nucleation on synthetic silver iodide, natural kaolinite and montmorillonite particles via condensation, freezing and deposition modes was studied by environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) in the temperature range of 250–270 K. By increasing the H2O pressure in the sample chamber at constant temperature, ice formation can be studied in situ and can be related to the chemical composition of the particles that can be determined simultaneously. A laboratory study of the effects of a kerosene-burner exhaust on ice nucleation and the evaporation rate of ice crystals

Abstract Laboratory experiments are described during which the influence of gases and particles from the exhaust of a kerosene burner on microphysical processes were studied. In one experimental investigation the evaporation rates of ice crystals polluted with the kerosene-burner exhaust were compared with the evaporation rates of pure ice crystals. During another experimental investigation the ice nucleating ability of the exhaust particles was studied in terms of the efficiency of the exhaust particles to act as deposition and condensation freezing nuclei, as immersion freezing nuclei, and as contact nuclei. New investigations on homogeneous ice nucleation: the effects of water activity and water saturation formulations

Laboratory measurements at the AIDA cloud chamber and airborne in-situ observations suggest that the homogeneous freezing thresholds at low temperatures are possibly higher than expected from the so-called “Koop-line”. This finding is of importance, because the ice onset relative humidity affects the cirrus cloud coverage and, at the very low temperatures of the tropical tropopause layer, together with the number of ice crystals also the transport of water vapor into the stratosphere. Aircraft borne optical in situ size distribution measurements were performed within Arctic boundary layer clouds with a special emphasis on the cloud top layer during the VERtical Distribution of Ice in Arctic clouds (VERDI) campaign in April and May 2012. An instrumented Basler BT-67 research aircraft operated out of Inuvik over the Mackenzie River delta and the Beaufort Sea in the Northwest Territories of Canada. A laboratory study on the uptake of HCl, HNO3, and SO2 gas by ice crystals and the effect of these gases on the evaporation rate of the crystals

The results of our new and earlier laboratory studies on the uptake of gases by ice crystals are summarized in terms of (1) the equilibrium phase diagram for a system gas/H2O, (2) the effect of these gases on the evaporation rate of ice crystals, and (3) in terms of the uptake of the gases by water drops. It is shown that the intrinsic quasi-liquid layer significantly affects the uptake of a gas by an ice surface in that, depending on the gas phase concentration, the layer thickness may be considerably increased by depressing the equilibrium freezing point causing additional surface melting. Effects of ice crystal habit on thermal infrared radiative properties and forcing of cirrus

[1] The impact of assumed ice crystal morphology on thermal infrared (IR) radiative properties of subtropical cirrus is quantified. In particular, the crystal-shape-dependent profiles of downwelling and upwelling thermal IR (broadband and spectral) irradiances and the radiative forcing of cirrus (at the top and bottom of the atmosphere) are investigated. Influence of ice crystal shape on retrieval of cirrus optical thickness and effective radius: A case study

Airborne measurements of spectral upwelling radiances (350A¢Â�Â�2200 nm) reflected by cirrus using the Spectral Modular Airborne Radiation measurement sysTem (SMART)-Albedometer were made over land and water surfaces. Based on these data, cloud optical thickness tau and effective radius Reff of the observed cirrus were retrieved. In situ measurements of ice crystal size distributions in tropical upper troposphere/lower stratosphere (UT/LS) clouds were performed during the SCOUT-AMMA campaign over West Africa in August 2006. Observation of Interference Patterns in Reconstructed Digital Holograms of Atmospheric Ice Crystals

Abstract The observation of interference patterns in reconstructed digital holograms of natural ice crystals is reported. It is suggested that an investigation of the interference fringes’ origin will yield a new application of holography in atmospheric sciences by revealing information on otherwise hardly accessible properties of the crystals.
