Re-examining the migration–trade link using province data: An application of the generalized propensity score

2013

Abstract The migration–trade link has been studied extensively since the mid nineties, finding a positive impact through different channels. Based on the generalized propensity score (GPS) methodology, we estimate a dose–response function, depicting a non-linear impact of immigration on exports using province data for Spain and Italy. For both countries the response of province exports to more immigrants from a given nationality is always positive, although varies with the level of immigrants. First we find neither minimum threshold nor exhaustion point in the effectiveness of the immigration networks on province exports. Second we find that the value of the potential bilateral exports reac…

The cultural dimension of music in the written curriculum: nationalism and ethnocentrism in primary education

2020

Entrepreneurship training for new ventures

2009

Several studies in the field of international entrepreneurship have indicated the inadequacy of public policy support for new ventures and called for more tailored training programs. This paper introduces a training program created for new ventures in Central Finland and analyzes its benefits and shortcomings using a qualitative case study. The findings reveal that the training program provided useful knowledge on how to develop a business further and how to make it understandable and attractive to a funder. However, the findings also indicate that there is a need for cultural adaptation: the training program developed originally for U.S. new ventures was not fully adapted for the needs of …

What’s in a name : the effect of category labels on teachers’ beliefs.

2019

In this paper, we report an investigation of the possible influence on teachers’ essentialist thinking and efficacy beliefs of category labels used to describe children’s educational difficulties. A 2x2x2 counterbalanced design was employed in which primary school teachers in Finland and the UK were exposed to vignettes that portrayed a child exhibiting difficulties in one of two domains: either behaviour or reading. Vignettes were presented in two versions. In one, the child was labelled as having either ‘ADHD’ or ‘Dyslexia’; in the alternate condition, no such label was ascribed, descriptions were identical in all other respects. Participating teachers were presented with two vignettes, o…

Why Does Cultural Diversity Foster Technology-enabled Intergenerational Collaboration?

2019

Globalization and information technology enable people to join the movement of global citizenship and work without borders. Although researchers have identified several technical barriers to intergenerational collaboration (iGOAL), the influence of cultural diversity on iGOAL has rarely been studied. Therefore, using a quantitative study approach, this paper investigates the impact of differences in cultural background on perceived technical and operational barriers to iGOAL. Our study reveals six barriers to IGC that are perceived differently …
