This chapter analyzes Finnish news journalism concerning asylum seekers and undocumented migration. It focuses on 'the variety of others', the media not only construct a division between 'us' and 'them,' but also create varieties of 'others.' The solution to the problems related to otherness is not, however, to recognize that we are all different, as the currently popular discourse that celebrates 'cultural diversity' often claims. Many studies investigated cultural differences in values, most notably by Hofstede and Schwarz. Relatively few have focused on virtues, a related and important concept in contemporary social science. The present paper examines the similarities and differences between nations, or blocks of - culturally related - nations on the perceived importance of virtues. Adults (N = 2.809 students) from 14 countries were asked to freely mention which virtues they found important to practice in daily life, and next to rate a list of 15 virtues, which reflect the most frequently mentioned categories in The Netherlands, as found in a previous study. The Current State of Social Media Research for eParticipation in Developing Countries: A Literature Review

While there is an increasing interest for conducting research on the importance of social media within the eParticipation area, more emphasis is still needed within the context of developing countries. We address this need by presenting a literature review on social media within eParticipation in developing countries, to add to the understanding of how these technologies influence the political environment. We discuss trends, contributions and challenges within this area, and propose a future research agenda. Furthermore, we propose a model of social media for eParticipation from a process view perspective to guide future research in this field.
