Definitions and Contexts of Intercultural Dialogue in European Policy Documents

In this chapter, we analyse how the concept of intercultural dialogue is both explicitly and implicitly used in European education policy documents. First, we explore how the concept is explicitly dealt with in the documents and how its meanings are produced in relation to other concepts and terms, such as culture, cultural heritage, identity, inclusion, empathy, tolerance, multiculturalism, citizenship, participation, and social responsibility. Città Invisibili of Teatro Potlach: A Journey to Rediscover Our Cultural Heritage

Città Invisibili is a multidisciplinary art project made by the Italian company Teatro Potlach. Compared to the canonical theatrical performances, Città Invisibili, being in its essence a site-specific performance, interacts with the place where it grows. With the project, the Italian group builds next to the existing space of the place (physical space and memory space) other two spaces, the space of the staging and the space of the performer, using different materials, in particular cloths and video projections. The deterioration of cultural asset is induced by biological, chemical, and physical factors, influenced by anthropogenic activity and environmental conditions. This article presents the Council of Europe’s educational policy, indicating its major milestones and characteristics when it comes to issues of cultural heritage. First it offers an analysis of the strategic documents (i.e. recommendation No. R (98) 5 of the committee of ministers to member states concerning heritage education and conventions, with emphasis on the Council of Europe Framework Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society (Faro Convention). Compatibility between traditional ground layers and 3D printing materials

Starting point of this work was the restoration of a Panel Painting depicting the Adoration of the Shepherds with a Saint Bishop, by an unknown author, stored in the Galleria Regionale della Sicilia di Palazzo Abatellis, in Palermo. It was decided to integrate a missing angular decorative element of the painting’s frame in order to restore the integrity of the frame by reverse engineering and 3D printing. Reintegration was feasible as the frame has a modular decorative pattern and the remaining three corners were available. This article analyzes the legal protection of cultural heritage and the role of cultural heritage in promoting European integration. From a legal perspective, the notion of culture stems from the preamble of the UNESCO Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity and is considered as a fundamental norm; however, cultural rights have been an overlooked and often ignored category of human rights for decades. The article thus aims at studying such a complex legal issue both from the perspective of International Law as well as under European Law in order to understand the way culture fosters integration within the European Union.
