The applicability of an Energy Dispersive X-ray Diffractometer to some technical questions in the field of Cultural Heritage is presented. This diffractometer, equipped with a white source, has been utilized for the structural and elemental analysis of some items having different nature. Given its design, the instrument allows to collect data from samples as big as a book or a little more. International audience; Preserving the cultural heritage of the performing arts raises difficult and sensitive issues, as each performance is unique by nature and the juxtaposition between the performers and the audience cannot be easily recorded. In this paper, we report on an experimental research project to preserve another aspect of the performing arts—the history of their rehearsals. ENERGY DISPERSIVE X-RAY DIFFRACTION IN CULTURAL HERITAGE SCIENCE: THE WINNING DUO OF STRUCTURAL AND ELEMENTAL ANALYSIS

The capabilities of Energy-Dispersive X-ray Diffraction (EDXD) in the field of Cultural Heritage are disccussed. EDXD diffractometer, equipped with a white source, is particularly suited for the structural and elemental analysis of items having different nature. Given its compact and versatile design, the instrument allows to collect data from samples without tearing down of any portion and with no specific preparation. In the wide energy range sampled during the measurements, both X-ray fluorescence and diffraction features appear. In all cases, data are acquired in air and in a non-destructive way, and their collection is fast.

Recovering our building heritage has a fundamental role regarding renewal process, since it constitutes one of the strategies for urban and territorial balance. The project of building recovery, therefore, mainly addresses the adjustment to new housing and urban needs, but it is obviously conditioned and/or “restricted” by the limitation of the building itself, in particular when the intrinsic characteristics must be preserved. The concept of “restriction” extends to its relation with the site, to the quality of the image, to the living conditions.
