Cultural content of lighting for the discovery of archaeological heritage
2013
Archaeological sites, built landscapes of the past, represent the identity heritage for future generations. The aim of this article is to investigate and demonstrate the importance of the cultural identity reinforcement, which can be achieved by enhancing the historical heritage through the use of artificial lighting. The charm of an archaeological site or a monument comes from the perception of its whole environmental context, both for the functional lighting and the enhancement of the artistic and monumental. Light can turn into concrete matter both in interiors, in archaeological and urban spaces: combining innovative technologies, artificial light can be used to change the world, to sha…
The Resilience of the Valley of Temples among natural calamities and social disasters
2017
Preservation of the cultural heritage, intended as common patrimony, is a cultural achievement that in territories like Sicily, which has often suffered the lack of legality, is the result of a difficult process of implementation. Cultural heritage is not ruined exclusively by natural calamities: damages caused by social and cultural disasters may at times be even more devastating. The archeological park of Agrigento, born in 1947 after a natural disaster (a landslide in 1944), hides a history of a half century of battles between illegal land use and legislative measures to protect a cultural heritage recognized worldwide. After fifty years of attacks against the archaeological park, a slow…
Regioninės kultūros samprata rengiant mokytojus Latvijoje, Lietuvoje ir Norvegijoje: lyginamoji atvejo analizė.
2019
Language: A Challenging Resource in a Museum of Sámi Culture
2015
Choices made around using language in museums can either reinforce or challenge existing common sense language regimes and cultural hegemonies. The issues around linguistic choices are particularly pronounced for a museum of indigenous culture in a multilingual minority language community. Using the case of the Siida, the National Museum of the Finnish Sami, located in Inari, in Finnish Samiland, we explore some of the issues involved in using language in the museum. Based on a linguistic landscape analysis, we identify three main functions of language in the museum: managing and controlling visitors; narrating and explaining content and being displayed as content/exhibit. We discuss these …
Historical Ecology, Archaeology and Biocultural Landscapes: Cross-Disciplinary Approaches to the Long Anthropocene
2022
From the local to the global scale, human impact is the real protagonist of the Anthro- pocene. It is impossible to understand ecosystems and the landscape without considering the long-term processes of anthropic activities. The driving forces in landscape change are strongly related to historical dynamics. Changes in political regimes, social structures, eco- nomic modes of production, cultural and religious influences—which all traditionally fall within the domain of the humanities—are phenomena entangled with many ecological and environmental factors. Thus, understanding landscapes in the Anthropocene is impossible without a cross-disciplinary approach.

Abitare la transizione nei Centri minori in Sicilia
2023
The proposal aims to develop concrete experience on possible ways of living from a framework of national and international references on the theme of the Social Housing Community to define a specific methodology on strategies to be tested on the theme of residence temporary in small towns in Sicily. The provision of minimum and adequate space for short and long periods of welcome is thus intended for new temporary residents (returning young people, migrant families, the elderly, travellers in transit) which can also be used to meet the needs of migrants, under the public direction of the municipal administration. The issue of residency is back in the disciplinary debate after the health eme…
Valledolmo 2030: la città che cura
2022
The small towns can become the places to reactivate the rural areas of our country through essential factors starting from the natural and cultural heritage, from social inclusion, from psycho-physical well-being, helping to reverse the unstoppable phenomenon of the flight of young people. The current Covid-19 emergency has revealed the crucial role of health, not only in terms of health facilities, but also in new ways to feel better, spend more free time outdoors, eat healthily and boost the economies of Local communities. It is in this context that the research-action project of the research group and the LabCity Architecture degree laboratory aims to investigate the theme of the city th…
The Power of Fiction in Creating a Territory’s Image
2021
The current economic crisis, and its effects on the European sovereign debt, has resulted in a significant reduction in Italian investments in the field of preservation and enhancement of cultural heritage. In fragile contexts, such as Sicily, the contraction of investments has put further into crisis the already weak manage- ment and planning system. Despite this scenario of crisis, in South-Eastern Sicily, the province of Ragusa shows a significant resilience to the crisis also due to the “Mon- talbano effect” and the capability to rethink the traditional heritage policies (Maga- zzino and Mantovani 2012). The paper, based on the analysis of the South-Eastern Sicily case study, reflects o…
