The brick furnace of Pisciotto Country, in Scicli: an example of "human disaster"
2017
Attacking cultural property to destroy a community: heritage destruction as a crime against humanity and genocide
2020
Cultural heritage, if considered in a multilevel dimension, represents the essence of a population. Attacks against tangible cultural heritage can amount to persecution or ethnic cleansing if committed with a discriminatory intent. For their nature, such attacks are often accompanied by destruction of intangible cultural heritage targeting the language, the traditions and the uses of a people. They cause, alongside tremendous losses of something unique and irreplaceable, psychological damages to the communities linked to them. An episode of cultural cleansing like the removal of communities by eradicating their cultural presence on a land encompasses also deliberate attacks against cultural…
Conceptualisation of heritage diplomacy in scholarship
2022
Heritage diplomacy is a recent concept and a new area of interest in the expanding scope of diplomacy. The concept is explored with various epistemological foci and theoretical frameworks in Western scholarship. It is often used to describe joint international projects or government initiatives abroad for preserving tangible cultural heritage. Several recent studies link heritage diplomacy to attempts to develop reciprocal relations between countries, regions, and/or communities through cultural heritage based on dialogue. This article contributes to interdisciplinary scholarship on heritage diplomacy by clarifying the concept, including its inherent notions of cultural heritage and approac…

A Geography of Coloniality: Re-narrating European Integration
2019
AbstractTurunen discusses how the “European significance” of the European Heritage Label (EHL) sites has been narrated through interconnections of European values and European integration. She argues that, in the context of the EHL, integration is intricately linked to the notion of spreading common values, which in turn is entangled with Eurocentrism. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the geography of coloniality: the underlying spatial structure that makes the coloniality of European cultural heritage and related hierarchies more visible. Ultimately, the chapter shows how the concept of coloniality enables us to analyse the ways Eurocentrism is also embedded in ideas about Europe…
"Hitaasti muistin, muistaessani unohdin" : muistamisen merkityksen rakentuminen Raija Siekkisen novellissa Vieras maa
2016

A Scan-to-BIM Approach for the Management of Two Arab-Norman Churches in Palermo (Italy)
2023
The paper shows the results of the research activities carried out by the Department of Engineering at the University of Palermo (Italy), which assessed the application of the Heritage Building Information Modelling (HBIM) methodology through a Scan-to-BIM approach to two local churches belonging to the medieval period. This project was motivated by a renewed interest from the city administrators towards the conservation of cultural heritage dating back to the Arab-Norman domination in Sicily since one of the two buildings was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 2015. The morpho-typological style of the churches has been acquired by high-detailed 3D surveys, which provided t…
AUGMENTED REALITY FOR CULTURAL HERITAGE: THE REBIRTH OF A HISTORICAL SQUARE
2019
Abstract. The case study, faced in this paper, arises in the context of Interreg Italia-Malta European project named I-Access, dedicated to the improvement of accessibility to Cultural Heritage (CH). Accessibility considered not only as the demolition of physical architectural barriers, but also as the possibility of fruition of CH through technological tools that can increase its perception and knowledge. Last achievements in photogrammetry and terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) technology offered new methods of data acquisition in the field of CH, giving the possibility of monitoring and processing big data, in the form of point clouds. Ever in this field, reverse engineering techniques and …
