Nonadiabatic spin-transfer torque of magnetic vortex structures in a permalloy square

The stationary displacement of a magnetic vortex core in a permalloy square caused by an ultrahigh direct current has been measured utilizing scanning electron microscopy with polarization analysis. Data have been analyzed for three different generic states of the Landau structure and up to a current density of $3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{11}\mathrm{A}/{\mathrm{m}}^{2}$. This procedure allows for separating the effects caused by the Oersted field, the nonadiabatic, and the adiabatic spin-transfer torque. Synchronizing Quantum Harmonic Oscillators through Two-Level Systems

Two oscillators coupled to a two-level system which in turn is coupled to an infinite number of oscillators (reservoir) are considered, bringing to light the occurrence of synchronization. A detailed analysis clarifies the physical mechanism that forces the system to oscillate at a single frequency with a predictable and tunable phase difference. Finally, the scheme is generalized to the case of $N$ oscillators and $M(<N)$ two-level systems.
Detection system for forward emitted photons at the Experimental Storage Ring at GSI

A single photon counting system has been developed for efficient detection of forward emitted fluorescence photons at the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at GSI. The system employs a movable parabolic mirror with a central slit that can be positioned around the ion beam and a selected low noise photomultiplier for detection of the collected photons. Compared to the previously used system of mirror segments installed inside the ESR the collection efficiency for forward-emitted photons is improved by more than a factor of 5. SNR measurements of silicon photomultipliers in the continuous wave regime

We report on our Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) measurements carried out, in the continuous wave regime, at different frequencies and at various temperatures, on a novel class of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) fabricated in planar technology on silicon p-type substrate. SNR of SiPMs is given by the ratio of the photogenerated current, filtered and averaged by a lock-in amplifier, and the Root Mean Square (RMS) deviation of the same current. In our measurements, we have employed a 10 Hz equivalent noise bandwidth, around the lock-in amplifier reference frequency. Converting external potential fluctuations into nonzero time-average electric currents using a single nanopore

The possibility of taking advantage of a fluctuating environment for energy and information transduction is a significant challenge in biological and artificial nanostructures. We demonstrate here directional electrical transduction from fluctuating external signals using a single nanopore of conical shape immersed in an ionic aqueous solution. To this end, we characterize experimentally the average output currents obtained by the electrical rectification of zero time-average input potentials. Robust single-parameter quantized charge pumping

This paper investigates a scheme for quantized charge pumping based on single-parameter modulation. The device was realized in an AlGaAs-GaAs gated nanowire. We find a remarkable robustness of the quantized regime against variations in the driving signal, which increases with applied rf power. This feature together with its simple configuration makes this device a potential module for a scalable source of quantized current.
Spin Currents injected electrically and thermally from highly spin polarized Co$_2$MnSi

We demonstrate the injection and detection of electrically and thermally generated spin currents probed in Co$_2$MnSi/Cu lateral spin valves. Devices with different electrode separations are patterned to measure the non-local signal as a function of the electrode spacing and we determine a relatively high effective spin polarization $\alpha$ of Co$_2$MnSi to be 0.63 and the spin diffusion length of Cu to be 500 nm at room temperature. The electrically generated non-local signal is measured as a function of temperature and a maximum signal is observed for a temperature of 80 K. Hydrodynamic synchronization of pairs of puller type magnetotactic bacteria in a high frequency rotating magnetic field.

Ensembles of magnetotactic bacteria are known to interact hydrodynamically and form swarms under the influence of external magnetic fields. We describe the synchronization of puller type magnetotactic bacteria in a rotating magnetic field by representing the bacteria as hydrodynamic force dipoles. Numerical simulations show that at moderate values of the hydrodynamic interaction parameter large ensembles of asynchronously rotating bacteria randomly eject propagating doublets of synchronized bacteria. Search for Supernova Neutrino-Bursts with the AMANDA Detector

The core collapse of a massive star in the Milky Way will produce a neutrino burst, intense enough to be detected by existing underground detectors. The AMANDA neutrino telescope located deep in the South Pole ice can detect MeV neutrinos by a collective rate increase in all photo-multipliers on top of dark noise. The main source of light comes from positrons produced in the CC-reaction of anti-electron neutrinos on free protons $\antinue + p \to e^+ + n$. This paper describes the first supernova search performed on the full sets of data taken during 1997 and 1998 (215 days of live time) with 302 of the detector's optical modules.
